COLLEGES TO HELP: Good Expansion Opportunity In Welfare Services --Hawley PHOTOGRAPHIC SUPPLIES CASTLE FILMS ALL MODELS ARGUS CAMERAS 1; The belief that the functions of' private social agencies have been sharply curtailed by government- al discharge of welfare services has been disputed by Prof. Amos H. Hawley of the sociology de- partment in an article in thej current Michigan Alumnus Quar-, terly Review. Extended Welfare Service "Welfare service has been ex- tended to apply to every aspect of community well-being," Prof. Hawley claims. This has opened a fertile fild which affords op- portunities for enlargement for private agencies, he believes. The effectiveness of such pro- grams will be enhanced by the findings of social scientists in universities, according to Prof. Hawley's article. As an example of a unique opportunity to reap the benefits of cooperation be- tween a university and a local community, he cites the Social Science Research Project started recently by the University, with operating units here and in Flint. Twofold Purpose The two aims of the project as described by Prof. Hawley are SRA Director Explains Role Of Consultant Function of the newly-appoint- ed Protestant Consultant to For- eign Students was explained by Franklin H. Littell, director of the Student Religious Association, in a letter read at a meeting of the International Students Commit- tee last night. Littell told the Committee that it is not the purpose of the Uni- versity to "establish" any religious creed on the campus. Mrs. Christine C. Chambers, the newly-appointed Consultant, will be available at Lane Hall for con- sultation with students who desire guidance, Littel said. Uncertainty among foreign stu- dent groups as to the nature of the work of the Consultant prompted Littell's explanation. Mrs. Chambers was appointed Protestant Consultant to For- eign Students by five denomin- ational agencies: the Roger Wil- liams Guild, the Lutheran Stu- dent Association, the Eposcopal- ian Students Foundation, the Wesley Foundation and the Con- gregational-Disciples Guild, School Supply Collection Set A drive to collect school supplies for Hungarian Jewish students will be conducted by the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation until the end of the semester Paper, pencils, notebooks, pens, slide rules and other university level supplies will be collected in a container in the Foundation.
