SATURDAY, DECEPIvIBER 7, I.MG , M[E MICHIGAN .DAILY PAGE TI SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 194(V ~PAGET jBachinr Grid Coach Resigns Post at EasL Lansing EAST LANSING, Mich., Dec. 6 - (/P) - Charles W. (Charley) Bachman, resigned tonight as head football coach at Michigan State College. The resignation was announced by Bachman at the annual MSC Football Bust and was accepted by President John A. Hannah. In his resigation address, Bach- man described his 1946 squad as "a great future football team." "I don't think I can (10the job as well as someone else, so I am not going to be back coaching at Michigan State College next fall." Bachman's Michigan State teams have won 70, lost 34 and tied 10 since he came here as head coach in 1933. Concerning the appointment of; a successor to Bachrn, Hannah said "We will not dis.close the name of the person we are consid- ering for the job. Geahan is a former Wolverine of 1944-45 when he led the team in scoring as a V-12 student. There- fore the Field House floor will be anything but foreign ground to him and he will bear watching. Fred Stone, another 6'6" cen- ter will spell Wulf at the pivot. Johnny Granack, a hoosier hot- shot from Hammond, Ind., Matt Mazza, and Pat Peppler, a pair of returning letterman, may also see action. The two teams are even up in the matter of height, with both quintets averaging 6 feet 2". The starting centers on the two squads are also even up in the height de- partment at 6 feet 6". Michigan State will be at- tempting to beak a Yost Field House jinx which has plagued them since 1933, when the Spartans squeezed out a 26-25 victory. Last season the Wolverines took the Spartans into camp 47-39 in the Ann Arbor game, but dropped the rematch at East Lansing, 49- 36. The Maize and Blue have a lit- tle Yost Field House record of their own that they intend looking after. Last year they were all but invincible on their home stamping grounds and wound up the season with six consecutive wins here. Over the entire 1945-46 campaign they dropped only one out of ten ball games on their home court, a 67-58 overtime affair with an In- diana club that was good enough to take second place in the Con- ference. Michigan, starting on the bas- ketball comeback road, will be out to improve on last season's record of 12 victories against seven losses. The probable lineups: MIC. MICIT. Since the inauguration of the hockey series in 1937, the Maize and Blue have dropped seven con- tests in five seasons. Last year the teams engaged in a four game home-and-home series. The scores of the tilts were 9-3 and 7-5 at Toronto and 6-1 and 4-0 at the Coliseum. Prospect of Rough Game Coach Ace Bailey always puts out strong aggregations which us- ually are among the top college hockey teams in Canada. The Blues also are noted for their pow- erful offensive drives, and Coach V. C. Heyliger has put his charges through heavy defensive drills and has been emphasizing backcheck- ing in order to combat the on- slaughts of the boys from Can- ada. Michigan will sart its usual number one line of Gordon Mac- Millan, who led the team in scor- ing with five points in the 10-7 victory over the Windsor Spitfires, at center; Dick Starrak, letter- man from last year, at left wing, freshman Lyle Phillips at right wing. Renfrew Out The second line will be changed as Al Renfrew, regular left winger on this trio, is out of action until ic igon League NEW SODA BAR HOURS. George Anderson, utility de- fenseman and forward, will play in Upton's slot on the number three forward line with Sam Steadman on the other wing and George Peugeot at center. Jack Mac- Donald will be in the goal. Toronto has lost two of their key men in the Blues' victories last year. Wally Halder, leading scor- er for the 1945-46 seasoh at To- ronto, is now playing semi-pro hockey. Bill Kosick has also left Toronto.
