(Continued on Page 4) Injured Wingbacks Still on Doubtful List Micligan State '17 Game Date Stands; Arisler OffersTo Play at East Lansing With three; right' halfbacks on the "maybe" list for Saturday's football finale at Ohio State, Michigan settled down to a week of intensive practice for the traditional battle which may decide the Conference championship and a. possible Rose Bowl bid. The trio of wingbacks, Chalmers "Bump" Elliott, Paul White and Ralph Chubb were all in uniform yesterday afternoon but whether they will be ready for heavy action against the Buckeyes remains a big question in the Wolverine camp. Trainer Ray Roberts said that he couldn't tell yet if any of the threesome would be ready. Meanwhile, the Wolverine-Michi- a I gan State date controversy.over the 1947 contest once again took the headlines with the announcement yesterday by Fritzd Cisler that the original Sept. 27 date for the 1947 State-Wolverine game would have to stand but the Maiie and Blue would be willing to play the contest at East Lansing as a concession to the Spar- tans. In a telegram to the State Athletic Director, Ralph Young, Saturday, night Crisler declared that "our board has voted with regret that be- cause of our existing schedule com- mitments and the regulation of the Western Conference regarding the making of advance football sched- ules, it is impossible for us to give you the assurance" that Michigan will schedule State "on some date which follows the opening of the fall quarter classes at Michigan State." Previously the Michigan State Athletic Council had agreed to ac- cept the Sept. 27 date with the assur- ance that the annual Spartap-Wol- verine contest would not be scheduled during registration week in 1948 and subsequent years. Sailing Clab The Michigan Sailing Club will compete at 10 a.m. today against two complete crews representing the University of Wisconsin over the Lake Wlhitmore course. At the last meeting of this group, the following officers were elected: George Allen, president; Jim Holgate, vice-president; Frank Kern, secre- tary; and Elmer Swanson, treasurer. MSC Board To Study New 'M' .Proposal EAST LANSING, Nov. 18.-(P)- The Michigan State College Athletic Board will meet "within the next day or two" to decide on an answer to the proposal sent the college by Uni- versity of Michigan today regarding future Spartan - Wolverine football relationships. Dean L. C. Emmons, chairman of the MSC Athletic Board, said he would call the meeting as soon as possible, adding he "doubted" if a joint meeting of the schools' ath- letic boards "could accomplish very much." "As I see it, we'll have two questions to decide," Emmons declared. "One will be whether we will want to play Michigan here next year and the other, whether we will agree to play the opener at Ann Arbor after that, until the 1952 season, as Mr. Crisler, says ishMichigan's onlysalternative." PGA Seeks Renewal Of Ryder Cup Series CHICAGO, Nov. 18. - (P) -Presi- dent Ed Dudley of the Professional Golfer's Association of America said today he had invited the British Ry- der Cup team to renew the interna- tional golf series with the United States in this country next year. Dudley, presiding at the opening session of the PGA's 30th annual meeting, said the invitation was cab- led to Captain Henry Cotton of the British team. The Ryder Cup series, in which the United States holds a 4 to 2 edge, last was played in 1937 at Southport, England. Date and site of the 1947 matches will be arranged later, Dudley said. Last renewal of the series was sched- uled in 1939 at Ponte Vedra, Fla., but was abandoned because of the war. By The Associated Press LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18-The Southern California chapter of the Football Writers Association unanimously adopted a vigorous resolution today urging the Pacific Coast Conference and the Western Conference, at their unprecedented meeting in Berkeley tomorrow, to issue a joint invi- tation to Army to play in the Rose Bowl New Year's Day. Members, before a gathering of more than 60 grid officials and experts, declared, in part, whereas, Army is willing to play in the Rose Bowl, Army represents the middle states as well as the western states, Army's three- year record makes it the greatest in the land, the public of Southern Cali- fornia is completely convinced Army should play in this, Southern Cali- fornia's own Rose Bowl, it should be it The resolution noted that. "the proposed Rose Bowl agreement be- tween the Western and Pacific Coast Conferences will be irre- parably harmed at its inception by a nationwide wave of criticism if Army is not now invited." Meanwhile officials of the two Conferences were either en route or already in Berkeley for the session tomorrow to discuss the proposed five-year Rose Bowl pact between the two loops. On - the - record comment was scarce, but representatives of the two colleges here, Southern California and U.C.L.A., were said to be pre- pared to hack a recommendation that the two conferences jointly in- vite Army to Pasadena. The two schools' teams meet Saturday to de- cide the Coast championship and the Rose Bowl honor. The last word received here from Commissioner K. L. Wilson of the western, or Big Nine, was; "We have no comment regardirg the possibility of the bid going to Ar- my." A controversy loomed in the Paci- fic-Big Nine proposal. Some quarters predicted a behind-the-scenes battle over the Jong brewing agreement, with several northern schools said to object to a closed door policy which would exclude all but Big Nine teams playing in the bowl. Pihos Sets Hoosier Record for Scoring BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Nov. 19.- Big Pete Pihos, Indiana's fullback who has been described as "an All- American at any position," will go down as the biggest scorer in Hoosier football history regardless of what he does against Purdue in his last col- legiate game next Saturday. Pihos, who has played fullback, quarterback and left halfback for the Hoosiers this fall after winning all- American honors at end in 1943, has tallied 120 points. The advantage he has on some other prolific point-pro- ducers at Indiana is that he got in four years of football, thanks to the, war.
