"AGE TWO TH lE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1946 Statements o ta e re Candi*da-,[-c s v The following platform and state- ments have been submitted by Stu- dent Legislature candidates running on the University Committee: Committee Platform Michigan's University student body has potentialities of becoming one of the most spirited, most enthusiastic and most closely knit groups in this section of the United States. Up to the present time little if anything has been done to unify the aims and desires of the 18,500 strong. In answer to an urgent and cry- ing plea, leaders of student partici- pation in University government have formed the "University Com- mittee" for unification on these am- bition and desires of students for recognition. With a platform de- signed to fulfill the wants and needs of one of the most representative col- legiate centers in the world, the "Uni- versity Committee" has outlined the following as their party ambitions: 1. Restoration of combined stu- dent spirit and student participation to an extent never before achieved in the annals of the University of Mich- igan. 2. Limiting the activities of the Student Legislature to those affect- ing the campus and all phases of campus life. 3. Elimination of all such mis- managed issues as the football ticket confusion by coordinated efforts and control by the students. Grading of faculty members by students to effect a greater partici- pation in class responsibility and in- struction. 5. Cooperative restaurant plans to eliminate the necessity of having some 8,000 students eat in ill- squipped and commercial eating places. 6. A complete housing survey on a practical, non-partisan basis for the benefit of all students. 7. Coordination, simplification and unity of student government in or- der to benefit all students without partiality. 8. Elimination of unwarranted con- tribution by students in the form of dues and tuition to such organiza- tion as the Union and League with- out a full answer regarding the use of such funds 9. Endorsement of all University programs to facilitate advancement and promotion of culture on the campus. "University Committee" candidates for the Student Legislature have been carefully chosen with absolute re- gard for their cooperative campus spirit, qualified backgrounds and in- tense desires to achieve the finest and most complete student representa- tion in student affairs for the wel- fare of the greatest number of col- legians at the University of Michi- gan. I am especially interested in seeing that the students of this campus have more to say in forming campus poli- cies. I have participated in various activities on this campus: Soph Cab- aret, orientation week, Pan Hel meet- ings and am vice-president of Collegi- ate Sorosis. Geoge Connor . Qualifications: I served on the student legislature at Westminister College before the war; I served on the East Quad council; I am a vet- eran. I pledge myself to work for greater cooperation betweean students and faculty and to give the students a voice in the policy making of the University. Robert Epsicine * Qualifications: I was Phi Beta Kap- pa, junior year, president of Phi Sigma Delta, member of IFC. Individual projects are innumer- able, but I believe myself capable of exerting the effort and demonstrat- ing the initiative and intelligence necessary to resolve the problems facing us because of the tremendous enrollment. Bill Gordon,... The foremost concern of the Legis- lature should be student problems, opinions and desires. This group should encourage a greater amount of student participation in campus activities also. Paul arrion * ** Active in high school functions and house manager of fraternity. I will carry the same enthusiasm into the new position that I have shown in the past. Carol * It will be my endeavor to help the Legislature becom^ a more active liason between the student body and the Administration and faculty. My experience has been acting as clas representative in high school student council and mrnemborship in the stu- dent legislature at another campus. Three years on The Daily sports staff, one year as Snorts Editor of the Ensian and the position of presi- dent of mny social fraternity have given me a good background of the problems which face the University's student body. George Leoinard . . . During the war served overseas as a navigator. Upon return to the States, was made troop training of- ficer and later a squadron adjutant. During the past two semesters served as housemanager and treasurer of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Nancy Lond. . . Qualifications: student govern- ment at Bradford Junior College; junior personnel assistant and Stu- dent Book Exchange here. I would like to see the Legislature more rep- rEesntative of student opinion. Joc - n ou r . . As a veteran. I am both familiar and concerned with their problems. As a senior, I am well acquainted with campus activities and student desires as a whole. The wishes of the student must come before all else. Carla Mulendore. . I am a junior in the literary college and a political science major. I have had several responsible positions, among them: central committee of Soph Project, assistant ticket chair- man of Soph Cabaret, orientation central committee, assistant chair- man of Casbah. George Nicolau... I believe that one of the necessities of student government is intelligent cooperation between the student body and the faculty. The Congress gives students a voice in affairs at this University and my interest is the student. Paul Prill.... I am a senior in the engineering college, with three semesters left at the University. I was a member of the IFC in 1945 while in the NROTC and served on the Executive Council for four months. John H*edfied Veteran, junior in the engineering college, vice-president of Zeta Beta Tau. I believe the primary function of the Legislature should be to en- hance the interest of body in its government.
