SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1946 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wolverines, MSC Renew Gri C .. _ .- --.-- . Spartans Hindered By Injuries In Annual Tilt Capacity Crowd Expected To See Wolverines Seek Seventh Straight Over Traditional Rival vf____________________________________ Boston College, Mississippi State, Cincinnati and Kentucky all hold decisions over Bachman's men. The Spartans have beaten Wayne and Penn State. Last Saturday Kentucky gave the East Lansing lads a pretty good working over, 39-14, and it is still questionable whether they have completely recovered. The Spartans' much - publicized pass-flinging tailback, Russ Reader, who was injured in the Kentucky game will probably be ready to see some action. Still bothered by a stiff knee, the ex-Wolverine is hoping to shoot the works against his former mates. Guerre State Threat But the Staters' real threat will be George Guerre, a 167-pound left halfback who gets away with great TB' Team Plays Michigan State At Home Today Wally Weber's 'B' Team will at- tempt to make its week old 26-6 shellacking of Michigan State's Jay- vees stick when the two teams meet again this morning at 10:30 a.m,. on Ferry Field. Michigan's Jayvees marred a per- fect State record last week and the boys from Lansing are spoiling for revenge. The Webermen turned in an outstanding performance in their first road game of the campaign, rolling up two first period scores to settle the issue. The Wolverines will probably stick to the same lineup that started in the first Spartan contest: Irv Wis- niewski and Frank Keiser at ends, Johnny Eizones and Pete LaBenda at tackles, Elmer Phillips and Hal Raymond at guards, Walt Keeler at center. In the backfield Bill Ghindia or Lou Brunsting will start at quar- ter with Chuck Lentz and Don Kuick at the halves and Mike Yedinak at full. HOBBY SUPPLIES 302 South State Street STATEMENT! His passing, kicking and running sparked the Spartans to a 19-16 triumph over previously un- beaten Penn State in State's best showing of the season to date. Injuries have hit the Spartans pretty hard this fall. Steve Sierad- ski, State's No. 1 fullback, was back in uniform this week but it is doubt- full if he'll be able to play. Guard Ed Bagdon is also on the inactive list and did not even make the trip here. Michigan Line Outweighed Filling out the Spartans' starting backfield will be Russ Gilpin at quarter; Lynn Chandnois at right half; and Frank Waters at full. Don Waldron may start at left half hi place of Guerre or Reader. Built around a quartet of letter- men Michigan State's line will out- weigh the Wolverine forwards by something like 10 pounds per man. The Spartan starters average 198 pounds. The four experienced State letter-winners are end Ken Balge, tackle Alger Connor and guards Don LeClair and Don Arnson. Michigan in Top Shape Conner is the heaviest man in the Spartan line at 208. Rounding out the starting forward wall for Bach- man's crew will be end Eddie Sob- czak, ta'ckle John Pletz and center Bob McCurry. This is the first year of varsity ball for this trio, Sob- czak being a freshman and the other two sophomores. Michigan will be in top shape for the game but it is probable that Cris- ler wil luse most of his squad during the course of the afternoon. Bob Wiese is ready to go again and may draw a starting assignment for the Crisler aggregation. Big Nine Meets In December CHICAGO, Nov. 8--P)-Western Conference officials, who by that time may be extending blessing to a league Rose Bowl representative, will hold their annual winter meet- ing here Dec,12-14, commissioner K. L. (Tug) Wilson announced today. The Big Nine already has given unofficial approval to a proposal for a five-year Rose Bowl tie-up, start- ing this New Year's Day. Formal announcement of the first Pasa- dena trek by a Western Conference team in 26 years is expected mo- mentarily. Because the snarled Big Nine race is expected to keep a champion in doubt right down to the finish, for- mal approval of a Bowl represen- tative probably will be delayed until well after the Nov. 23 closing round. Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Northwestern, and even Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa, tied for fifth place, still rate as title possibilities. WOLVERINE FULLBACK - Jack Weisenberger will be a key man in Michigan's offense when the Wolverines meet the Spartans at Michigan Stadium this afternoon. Cross Country Team Runs at Ypsi Normal Michigan Trackmen Finish Far in Front As part of their pre-season cross- country practice, Michigan's 32-man track squad dropped in on Michigan Normal in Ypsilanti yesterday for a three and one half mile hill-and-dale jaunt over a wet, soggy course in which no score was kept. Dave Williams, a Wolverine stand- out in practice sessions so far, fin- ished the long grind first. The trans-. fer from Georgetown University hit the tape in 18:34. Queller Second Don Queller, a Maize and Blue transfer from Indiana, was second, and Herb Barten, Conference 880- yard champion last year from Michi- gan, took third. NormalI's first man to the finish line took fourth, with other Ypsi- lanti harriers finishing eighth, ninth, 15th, and 19th. Other Wolverine placers were Alex Morris, fifth; Dean Voegtlen, sixth; Chuck Birdsall, sev- enth; and Don Mettler, 10th. Cindeirmen Improved Coach Ken Doherty of the Maize and Blue, termed the practice run "a vast improvement over anything to date," and singled out the per- formances of Barten, Morris, and Mettler, as "especially encouraging." The final outing of the pre-season cross-country practice will take place next Wednesday, when six seven- man varsity teams compete against each other at Ferry Field in another hill and dale grind. Medals and cer- tificates will be awarded to the win- ners. Coach Ken Doherty regards cross- country running as one of the best methods of conditioning trackmen for both the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Wildcat- Hoosier ClashHighlights Big Nie Card Gophers Meet Purdue; Iowa, Wisconsin Play CHICAGO, Nov. 8-(AP-The Big Nine's best offensive team, and strongest defensive club will collide tomorrow as Northwestern and de- fending champion Indiana battle to remain title contenders before 40,000 at Dyche Stadium in Evanston. The Wildcat-Hoosier clash tops a three-game Conference card which also send Iowa to Wisconsin for a showdown of .500 performers and Purdue to Minnesota for a struggle to elude the league cellar. Illinois, current pace-setter is idle, resting for its decisive battle with Ohio State a week from Saturday. The vastly improved Buckeyes get an expected breath- er against Pittsburgh at Colum- bus. Northwestern, paced by power runners Vic Schwall, Frank Aschen- brenner and Art Murakowski who have"sparked the Wildcats to a league-leading rushing average of 5.3 yards per sally, must cope with a Hoosier defense which has yielded only 163.5 yards per game rushing to four league foes. Each team needs a victory to keep its title hopes alive. A Northwestern win will hoist the Wildcats into a second-place tie with Michigan, each with three wins, a defeat and a tie. The Hoosiers, breaking even in four league starts, have a feeble championship chance. Wins over Northwestern and Purdue will give Indiana a final 4-2 record, but this will be out of the money unless Illinois, Michigan and Ohio State do some fancy throat-cut- ting in the final two rounds of play. Like Indiana, both Iowa and Wis- consin carry 2-2 records into their meeting at Madison, but the Badg- ers with a seven-game Conference schedule, compared with six each for Iowa and Indiana, can become a stronger title threat with a triumph. Should the Badgers hurdle the Hawkeyes, who will be minus in- jured fullback Dick Hoerner, they might menace Michigan in their Nov. 16 invasion of Ann Arbor and with an upset of the Wolverines would have only hapless Minnesota to conquer for a final 5-2 record. Injury-plagued Purdue must take on Minnesota without two key performers, quarterback Bob DeMoss and guard Dick Barweg- OUT OF ACTION-Injury to Dick Hoernersensational Iowa half- back, has dampened Hawkeye hopes for victory over Wisconsin in their crucial Big Nine battle to- day. Doubleheader Tops Intramural Events One of the biggest Intra-mural events this semester will take place Monday night when a championship double header of speedball and touch football is staged at Wines Field un- der the lights. In the first half of the twin bill Sigma Chi faces Kappa Sigma for the Fraternity Speedball title fol- lowed by a, scrap for the Residence Hall touch football crown between Lloyd House of the West Quad and Greene House which upholds the honor of the East Quad. Czarobski, Starters as BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y., Nov. 8- (P-Coach Frank Leahy announced late today that while Notre Dame quarterback Johnny Lujack would be ready for at least some action against, Army tomorrow, he was doubtful if either halfback Floyd Simmons or varsity right tackle Ziggy Czarobski would play at all. The coach made this statement after sending his six-man hospital squad running around the Bear Mountain Inn field for a few min- utes today, several hours after the Irish arrived from South Bend, Ind. the rest of the squad did not work out. Leahy said the Irish vould remain here overnight. He reported halfback Terry Brennan, guard Bob McBride and center George Strohmeyer, who were also among the injured, all were recovered and ready for action. Lujack, who sprained an ankle in practice Wednesday, found the ail- ing joint still stiff when he tried to pivot, which would hamper his pass- ing and defense work.
