Michigan led 58 2/3-58 1 ;3 go- ing into the final event, the mile relay, inwhich Michigan State's Jack Diannetti finished fifteen relay, in which Michigan State's chor-man, Dick Forrestal, to give the Spartans the final edge. State's winning time was 3 min. 23.7 sec. State was able to garner eight firsts while the Wolverines cap- tured six. Jack Diannetti, State's out- standing distance runner, opened the day's events with a twenty yard victory over Michi- gan's Herb Barten in a mile that was run in a driving rainstorm. Wolverine Dick Forrestal ran the outstanding race of the day as he came from behind to nip tem- mate George Shepherd at the fin- ish line of the quarter mile. His time of 49.8 seconds was very good in a track that was beginning to resemble a small river. Bill Osgood continued on his winning ways in the low hurdles defeating Spartan Aces Hal Mayhew and Fred Johnson in 25 seconds flat. Osgood was third at the final hurdle but a sudden burst of speed was enough to nip Johnson and Fraser at the tape by a step. Chuck Fonville was beateq in MICIGAN PLAYING TROUGH SATURDAY ft. 6/4 in. but was able to estab- lish a new field record in the shot put, hurling the sphere 51 ft. 91/2 in. Spartan Bob Schepers domi- nated both dashes with Michi- gan's Val Johnson close on his heels in each event, while Jack Diannetti produced the second half of his double victory for the Spartans finishing out ahead of Chuck Low and Herb Barten in the half mile. Diannetti's time was a good 1 min. 57.6 sec. Other Michigan winners were Bob Gardner who won the high ,lump with a leap 5 ft. 10 1/8 in. while jumping into a pit that re- sembled a water hole, and Ed Ulvestad cleared 12 ft. Golfers Seek Lucky'13th Over Buckeyes Michigan's unsuperstitious golf ers hope that Lady Luck will no stop them from seeking their 13th victory of the season today when they tackle vaunted Ohio State here in the final dual match of the year. This is the battle the Wolverines have been waiting for. It will serve .as an acid test for next w k's Bi Nine meet at Purdue. The Buckeyes paced by Howie Saunders, handed the Maize and Blue a 14-13 defeat at Columbus in the Wolverines' first Big Nine clash April 26. Michigan rolled over Northwestern and Illinois in other Conference clashes, but Pur- due blasted a Wolverine seven- game winning streak last Satur- day. Michigan, however, returned to the victory trail Wednesday when it shelled the University of Detroit in their only tilt of the week. Coach Bert Katzenmeyer used a pair of jayvee golfers -Chuck McCallum and Wes Carlson-in routing the weak Detroit linksters but he'll have to send his top eight varsity performers against the dangerous Buckeyes in this morn- ing's best ball play and the after- noon's individual matches. Ready for the Bucks will be a Wolverine line-up consisting of Captain Dave Barclay, Ed Scha- Ion, John Jenswold; Rog Kessler, Pete Elliott, Bill Ludolph, Bill "Corky" Courtright and Jack Vezina. The Maize and Blue will pick up valuable experience on the fair- ways tomorrow afternoon when they meet a 12-man alumni squad at Barton Hills. -The Lynn Riess trophy, in memory of a former Wolverine golfer killed in the late war, will be presented to the win- ning team.
