COLLtEGE w EN! HEICME MERICANIJISERS When the Wolverine thinclads match strides with Michigan State today, at East Lansing they will be meeting a Spartan team with a mighty big ax to grind; the Jenison boys are hot after their first cin- der victory over Michigan. State came roaring down last winter with this in mind. They cane and they saw but they didn't quite match up to the third re- quirement. Michigan expects to fulfill all three in tomorrow's tus- sel. Relay May Be Decisive The r'elay may well prove the margin of difference between the two teams and the Michigan four- some is in top shape. Johnson, Detwiler, Shepherd and Forres- tel is the usual order but Herb Barten may run a leg depending on how the meet shapes up. Val Johnson is expected to do yeoman service in the dashes. In the indoor meet, State racked up a lot of their points, in these events, but Johnson wasn't in shape then. Bob Schepers is the number one Spartan and has turned in a 21.3 in the 220 as compared to John- son's 21.6. But Johnson ran just behind the great Herb McKenley last week and on a wet track, so times don't mean too much. Hurdles Spartan Meat The hurdles proved another fruitful source of indoor points for the East Lansiing Timber-Toppers. But Michigan has Bill Osgood who swept both sticks in the Illini meet to see that this doesn't happen again. State has both Fred John- son and Bob Fraser who are fine hurdlers to make this a good race. But the event of the day will be the mile run where Jack Dianetti will meet Herb Barten. Barten hasn't been pushed in any of his mile ventures this outdoor season but is capable of Diannetti's time of 4:12. Today's event may well see one of the countries fastest mile times. II I-M Notes I Special To The Daily EAST LANSING, May 22 - Michigan's tennis team continued its dominance over the netters of Michigan State as it downed them for the second time this season, by a 5-4 margin, here today. They won the last two doubles, however, to take the match, 5-4. In the final match of the day, Hal Cook hooked up with Gordie Naugle to\ clinch the victory for Michigan. They downed Spartan's Malaga and Mike Eliott in straight sets, 10-8, 6-4. In the number one spot, An- dy Paton found himself in what turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the day. Matched with Al Reynolds of State, Paton twice had match point against him, but both times he pulled out, finally win- ning 5-7, 7-5, 8-6. Michigan's number two man Fred Otto, ran up against rougher competition, dropping the first t With a six-run outburst in the fourth i n n i n g that virtually clinched the game, Phi Kappa Psi tumbled Sigma Chi, 8-3, in the semi-final round of the I-M fra- ternity softball championship and will tangle with the Phi Sigma Delta-Phi Delta Theta victor for the title.; Southpaw Jerry Sullivan had perfect control when it counted most, as five Sigma Chis were left stranded. ~Yr ' } ' Y. .,,.. .. Coach Bert Katzenmeyer's crew will be at full strength with the ight top men on the varsity tee- ng off against the Bucks. The Ohioans are rated as co-favorites with Michigan in the forthcoming Conference championships and his final test may well serve as L prediction for n e x t week's match. The Wolverines tuned up for omorrow's encounter with the Buckeyes as they trounced the University of Detroit for their twelfth win of the season. The performances of two young fresh- men were especially noted by Coach Katzenmeyer as he com- mended the play of Chuck Mc- Callum and Wes Carlson who teamed to take all nine points from the Titans and thereby clinch the match.
