Jim Morrish is not to be over- looked either, with a 6.5 clocking to his credit. Michigan has an admitted ad- vantage in the 440 and shot put. Fraser is the only Spartan with a quarter-mile near Hugh Short's 50.2. In addition to Captain Short, Coach Doherty has Dick Forrestel, Mel Detwiler, and perhaps Herb Barten all on hand. George Shep- herd will still be on the inactive list due to a strained muscle. In addition to Queller in the distances, Michigan will have Charley Birdsall, Rog Kessler and Chuck Low to throw against Dia- netti and Gibbard of State, and, of course, Conference champion Barten in the half Doors for the Michigan- Northwestern swimming meet will open for students at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Sports Building. The spotlight will be focused on the 165-pound match where two National Collegiate Champions, Bill Courtright of Michigan and Dave Shapiro of Illinois, will en- ter the ring in a contest where the stakes will be quite a bit more than the usual team point award. Corky will be out to avenge his only defeat of last season. which he suffered at the hands of Shapiro in the Ilini meet. At the end of the 1945-46 Con- ference campaign, Corky, who had been wrestling at 165, re- turned to his regular weight division and captured the NCAA 155-pound crown while Shapiro went on to win the National 165-pound title. This will be the first time in many a year that two NCAA champs in different divisions will lock in combat in a regular col- legiate meet. Shapiro recently chalked un his 18th consecutive victory in the Indiana meet to maintain a perfect competitive record. Corky has won all of his matches this season by falls. The Wolverines were dealt two serious blows this week when "Old Man Injury" visited the Keen camp and pronounced two com- petitors unfit for action. Johnnie Allred, regular 128-pounder, is out with intestinal flu and 136-poun- der Maurice Smith is still suffer- ing from, a head injury incurred in the Ohio meet. Coach K een will use Jim Smith at 128 pounds and wrestle Ed Grimes at 136. Smith de- feated his opponent in the Northwestern meet and dropped his match in the Ohio contest. Grimes, an Ann Arbor boy, is a newcomer and will make his first appearance for the Maize and Blue this afternoon. Harv Littleton, Byron.Dean, or John Keller will appear for the Wolverines in the 121-pound clash, while Phil Carlson will wrestle in the 145-pound clash. Carlson has a record of one victory and two defeats in Big Nine competition this season. Bob Betzig, who has scored three pins it three Conferenced meets to date, will grapple at 155 pounds against Illinois. In the 175- pound bracket, the Wolverines will enter Hugh Mack, Mack has two victories and one defeat to his credit so far this season. Letterman Dan D w o r s k y should w r e s t I e in the heavy- weight m a t c h for Michigan. Dworsky has been hampered for the past several days with a head cold but will probably be in shape in time for the meet. The Illini aggregation squeaked out a 14-12 triumph over the Hoosiers in their only Big Nine appearance to date. Coach Bob Dixon requests all candidates for the 1947 varsity tennis squad to be present at a meeting at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday in the Michigan Un- ion (see bulletin board for room number). Benny Oosterbaan was the only Maize and Blue basketball player ever to lead tihe Big Ten in scoring. He turned the trick in 1928 when he connected for 129 points in 12 games. By CLARK BAKER M i c h i g a n' s record-breaking swimmers will go after another mark at 8 tonight when they play host to Northwesterns up-and- down natators at the Sports Building pool Wolverine sights tonight will be trained en the world and Ameri- can record for the 300-yard med- ley relay race Matt Mann has in- dicated that his ace trio of Harry Holliday, Bob Sohl and Dick Wein- berg will seek to lower the present American mark of 2:50.8 for the event set in 1943 by another Mich- igan threesome. Just Miss Mark The Maize and Blue relay team were only six-tenths of a second off the mark when they churned the 300-yard distance in 2:51.4 against Purdue two weeks ago. The same Maize and Blue trio also posted a 2:51.7 against Minnesota last week. Holliday was a mem- ber of the 1943 Wolverine team that set the present mark. Michigan will rule a top-heavy favorite over Northwestern, but Wildcat Bill Teusner, one of the nation's top middle distance swim- mers, may steal the show tonight. In the 220-yard free-style the Northwestern sophomore ace will be paired off against Michigan's Gus Stager. Heusner's best time for the distance is 2:14.9, while Stager registered a 2:15 last week. Heusner wil also swim the 440- yard free-style, in which event he is unbeaten this year. His fastest time of 4:52.2 is the second best 440 clocking turned in in the na- tion this year. Mann has nomi- nated Wally Stewart to carry the brunt of Michigan's hopes against Heusner in the 440. Sohl After Record Bob Sohl will go after the Mich- igan pool (and until last year the world and American) record for the 220-yard breast stroke. Sohl topped the listed standard of 2:22 with his fast 2:21.5 time at Pur- due two weeks ago. The race for second in the breast stroke be- tween Michigan's Bill Upthegrove and the Purple's Steve Martin- chick may prove one of the eve- ning's closest contests. Upthegrove has shown rapid improvement and last week the Wolverine freshman beat out Min- nesota's ace, Mel Ivonen, in a good 2:29.8. Martinchick, on the strength of a 2:27.4 performance against Wisconsin a week ago, will rule a slight favorite to beat the Maize and Blue freshman. Mann also announced that Wolverine divers Gil Evans and Capt. Alex Canja will give an exhibition of high board diving. VETERAN FORWARD - Ted Greer shines on number one line. His sterling play helped hum- Lle Minnesota yesterday, 4-2. By CHUCK LEWIS Special To Tice Daily MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Feb. 14 -Michigan's hockey sextet defeat- ed the Minnesota Gophers 4-2 last night to decide the mythical West-. ern Conference championship be- fore a crowd of 4,265 at the Min- neapolis arena tonight. Defense was the deciding factor in the contest as the Maroon and Gold eased up enough to let Wally Gacek through to clinch the game for the Maize and Blue at 9:10 and 17:11 in the final period. Jack MacDonald was at his best as he turned away 40 Gopher shots that were destined for pay territory for miraculous saves. The Wolverines were also back-check- ing in great fashion which proved to be the margin of victory for Vic Heyliger's charges. Uses Only 10 Men Coach Heyliger used but 10 men to repulse Minnesota's attempt to wrest the Big Nine crown from the Wolverine pucksters. Defenseman Dick Roberts drew first blood for the Northmen on a screen shot which he put high in the corner of the net at 3:29. Twice in the period Ted Greer broke away only to be stopped by nice saves by goalie Tom Karakas. Both goalies made spectacular saves throughout the stanza, the best of which was made by Mac- Donald when the Wolverines were short as a result of a two-minute hooking penalty handed George Balestri. MacDonald raced out from the crease and fell on the loose puck about five feet from the net to save the Maize and Blue from disaster. Warning his men that the Hawkeyes are much better than their record indicates, Coach Oz- zie Cowles is expecting trouble- plus from "Pops" Harrison's out- fit. Nor are his fears groundless. Iowa is loaded with potentially great material that is long over- due to explode. 4 Harrison could throw four former all-conference selections against the Wolverines tonight if he chose. Dick Ives was cho- sen on the "dream team" of 1944 when he set a new Big Nine scoring record that still stands. Dave Danner was also a first team selection that year and Herb Wilkinson made the select group a year later. His brother Clayt was selected on the second team that year. However, the wily Hawkeye coach has indicated he will start almost an entirely new team to- night'in an effort to break the five game losing streak the lads from the corn country have com- piled. Murry Wier and newcomer Stan Straasma will probably be at the forwards, Herb Wilkinson will move over to center from guardtand freshman Billy all will team with Jack Spencer at the guard posts. An interesting scoring battle should develop between Wier and Michigan's Mack Suprunowicz who are currently running four and six in the conference scoring race. Wier has a 13.1 average over an eight game route and Supruno- wicz has 121. in one game less. Wilkinson is 11th in the race and will be another big gun that Mich- igan will have to silence if they want to move on to the Purdue game Monday night with a better than .500 average. Your Haircut!!
