THE MICHIGAN DAIN Michigan State Golfers Host to Michigan Squad Riding high on the crest of a six match winning streak, the Wol- verine golf team will invade the territory of the Spartans of Michi- gan State this afternoon for their second meeting with the MSC crew this season. Earlier in the year Coach Kat- zenmeyer's team notched a 23-13 victory over the Spartans on Michigan's home course and "Tis meeting is expected to be even closer," Coach Katzenmeyer stated, "since everyone is tougher in their own back yard." Making the trip will be the eight top varsity golfers led by Captain Dave Barclay and big Ed Schalon, currently the hottest golfer on the squad. Coach Kat- zenmeyer also named Rog Kessler, John Jenswold, Paul O'Hara, Bill Ludolph, Bill Courtright and Pete Elliott as the Maize and Blue rep- resentatives on the East Lansing links. Coach Ben Van Alstyne, Spar- tan mentor, is expected to field his strongest squad in their attempt to knock the Wolverines off their lofty perch. Many of the same link- sters that gave Michigan one of their toughest matches of the sea- son will be on hand to meet Mich- igan today. Duncan Fisher who tied Rog Kessler in their singles encounter is definitely a starter while Brien Charter and John Mounteer who took 61/ points from Garry De- Vries and Bill Ludolph will also tee off against the Wolverines. Other standouts on the Spartan squad are Bob Tansey, who split with Barcley in their match, and Don Vantine, who defeated Jens- wold 1 up in their singles play. Play will begin about 1:30 p.m. with the best ball and singles matches being combined. Barclay and either Courtright or Jenswold will lead off for Michigan while Scalon and Kessler will tee off in the number two slot. Pairing up in the number three slot will be O'Hara with either Courtright or Jenswold depending on who plays with Barclay in the number one position. Ludolph and Elliott will round out the Michi- gan entry Major League Roundup By The Ascoeiated Press The Detroit Tigers retained their one game lead on first place, as Prince Hal Newhouser won his second game of the year, defeating Washington. 8-0, in a night game. Boston kept pace with the Ti- gers as they smothered the Chi- cago White Sox in Fenway Park to the tune of 19-6, with Williams hitting two home runs. Bob Feller lost his second game of the season, when Cleveland dropped a 7-6 game to the Phil- adelphia Athletics. The Yankees resumed their winning ways again as they, dumped the St. Louis Browns, 9-1. In the National League, Chicago dropped a 7-4 decision to the Bos- ton Braves narrowing their first place margin to ' game. The New York Giants moved up slightly as they pushed St. Louis farther into the cellar, defeating them 5-0. Sigma Chi, Theta Xi, and the Betas are now tied for first with five points apiece. Picking up all of Theta Xi's points, Don McLean captured the high hurdles in 17 seconds flat. The best qualifying time of :16.9 was made by Harry Wieting, Beta Theta Pi, but he failed even to place in the finals as Moe Hill, Sig- ma Chi, finished second, Don Ay- ers of Sigma Chi third, and Bob Olsen Delta Upsilon came in fourth. Starting to sprint around the last turn in the mile grind, Beta Will Caldwell kicked in ahead of the rest of the field just as he broke the tape. Phi Sigma Kappa Max Iverson couldn't keep up the pace that he had set in the initial three laps and had to be content with third place behind DU Dave Bradbury. while Sig Ep Gene Freed took fourth. The winning time was 5:03.2. As it was, the last two doubles matches had to be concelled be- cause of a driving rain that hit the courts late in the afternoon. An earlier shower had stopped the games for about 20 minutes. Otto Wins In the number one slot, Fred Otto set the pace for the rest of the Wolverines, by taking Titan Larry Kane in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Kane had a hard driving serve, but it was little help as Otto had little trouble in downing him. Following along the pattern set by Otto, Wolverine captain Bill' Mikulich took two straight sets from Fred Kassner, 6-0, 6-1. Hal Cook allowed his foe. Bob Kline- smith, one game in each of the two sets to take him down the line. 6-1. 6-1.
