Especially significant was the uncovering of some unexpected pitching strength in the person of one Art 'Dole. The junior righthander from Glencoe, Ill., faced only 21 batters in the six innings he worked, allowing only a single and a walk in the fourth. At the plate and on the field, the Wolverines looked like a vast- ly improved club over the team that "slopped" to a 7-6 win over Western Michigan the day before. Little Charley Ketterer was the big man with the stick for the Maize and. Blue yesterday, getting There will be an important meeting of the "M" Club at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Michi- gan Union. Michigan pecked away at start- ing pitcher Don Thielman for a run in the first, two in the second, and another in the sixth. Then they sewed it up in the seventh with a big five-run explosion on three walks and singles by Tom- asi, Ketterer and J. T. White. White also turned in a credit- able performance on the mound in the two innings he worked, giv- ing up the other two hits the Tar- tars made, but facing only six men. Bob Fancett finished and allowed Detroit's only runs, scored on three walks, a hit batter and a fielder's choice. Only a week and a half away is the opEning meet of the Confer- ence circuit, a triangular affair involving Michigan, Purdue and Indiana on the Ferry Field track. Yesterday marked the first time the whole squad had donned sweat-suits since the victorious af- ternoon out in Berkeley, Calif., when the Wolverines tamed the Golden Bears, 712-59.2. Coach Ken Doherty's main hope right now is that none of his new- found strength in the dashes and hurdles has suffered by the lay- off. Hack Coplin and Bill Osgood plugged a very wide hole in both tLe high and low hurdle spots, while Orval Johnson began show- ing his sprint form of old. Coplin, Johnson and Osgood all made surprising performances in the California meet. The trio all registered victories with John- son winning the 220 yard dash. I M Baseball In Full Swing A six-run first inning which in- cluded Bill Chope's first of two home runs highlighted '46 cham- pion Phi Delta Theta's 11-7 vic- tory over Phi Sigma Kappa, as the I-M fraternity league swung into the second week of compe- tition yesterday. After a fierce pitchers' duel be- tween Sig Ep Harry Anderson and ATO hurler Pete Logothetis, the Sig Eps broke a 2-all deadlock in the fourth to win 5-3. Sparked by Hal Rosen's Deliv- ery and Fred Arnstein's potent bat, the Zeta Beta Tau nine, defending district champs, downed Delta Tau Delta, 4-0. Other results: Sigma Chi 5. Partially on the basis of scores achieved in yesterday's practice on the University Golf Course and previous performances, six Wol- verines were named by Coach Bert Katzenmeyer to face the Normal golfers. They include Jack Vezina, Doug Beath, Mort .Cohn, Ken Berke, Garry DeVries, and Wes Carlson. The University Golf Course was closed to students yester- day because of the soggy fair- ways, but it may be open today ... It was suggested, however. that students call the club- house--9308--to check on the present playing condition of the course. Cohn produced the best score yes- terday-a 79-for 18 holes of golf. Katzenmeyer, however, stated that none of the jayvee starters to- day are assured of berths on the squad. In fact, the youthful Wol- verine mentor indicated that "three or four boys may possibly move up to the varsity before the next jayvee clash." RONSON WORLD'S GREATEST LIGHTER SIFIED ADVERTISING He added that "the selections were practically plucked out of a hat because you can't rate a man's potentialities merely on a one-day performance." Katzenmeyer plans to carry a 12-man varsity, and a jayvee and freshman squad of 10 men apiece. The oft-postponed 36-hole medal event to determine the material for the 32 berths will probably be held tomorrow under the direction of Harry Kaseberg, golf assistant at the University course. Katzenmeyer will leave tomor- row with his six leading varsity candidates to compete against the dangerous Ohio State Buckeyes at Columbus on Saturday in their first Conference test. The Buckeye golfers showed un- usual strength last week when they overwhelmed the Spartans of Michigan State in an Indepen- dent tilt at Columbus. The meet was switched from Lansing where the links were underwater after spring floods. Three more matches appear on Michigan's jayvee schedule, all at home: Michigan State Norial, May.6; Central Michigan, May 13; Bowling Green College, May 26.
