16, 1947 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wolverines Down Katzenmeyer To Hold Trials For JV, Freshman SquadsY Notre Dame, By MURRAY GRANT With a highly successful South- ern trip under his belt and the prospect of a crammed schedule before him, Coach Bert Katzen- meyer, new Wolverine golf men- tor, is faced with the task of nar- rowing the 80 aspirants for the 1947 golf squad down to a work- able figure. Coach Katzenmeyer has there- fore scheduled a 36 hole medal event for tomorrow and Friday apd upon the basis of the scores turned in will be able to make his first cut. He plans to slice his squad down to 32 men who will represent Michigan on the fair- ways this year. 10 Man Squads In addition to a 12 man varsity composed most probably of the eight men who made the Southern trip and four other top notch per-! formers, the new link coach will have a jayvee squad of ten men and a freshman team of a like number. The jayvees will participate in four matches thus far arranged and the prospect of additional matches is possible. They open their season a day after the var- sity swings into competition when they travel to Ypsilanti to meet the Michigan State Normal links- men on April 24. Return Match On May 6 they play a return match with the Normal golfers on the tough University Golf Course and on May 13 they meet Cen- tral Michigan on the home fair- ways. Led by Captain Dave Barclay and paced by eight other letter- winners and several promising golfers the outlook for the Con- ference champs is indeed bright and experts look for the Confer- ence title to remain in Wolverine hands. Major opposition to this claim lies with the Buckeyes of Ohio State who are reputed to have one of the finest aggregation ever to come out of Columbus. Other seri- ous threats are the Wildcats of Northwestern and the Fighting Il- lini.
