AVC To Give 'Hootenanny' At Rackham Program Features Folk Songs, Ballads Ann Arbor's first "Hootenanny," a program of ballads, chanteys and spirituals, will be presented ats8:15 p.m. today in the Rackham Audi- torium under the auspices of the American Veterans Committee. Tickets will be on sale all day in the Union and the League. Ap- pearing on the program will be Pete Seeger, Bernie ,Asbel, and Betty Sanders, all of whom have done extensive concert work sing- ing folk songs. Although he has a formal musi- cal background, Seeger has been singing folk songs for audiences from coast to coast since 1935. In that year he first found the five string banjo which he uses to ac- company himself. After leaving his job as assist- ant to Alan Lomax, in the Archive of American Folksongs of the Lib- rary of Congress, Seeger traveled through 45 states making up and singing songs. Some of his better known recordings are "Talking Union," Lonesome Train" and "Songs of the Lincoln Battalion." Betty Sanders' songs of the people were gathered from the many corners of New York's teem- ing international life. Her reper- toire now numbers some three hundred songs of eighteen nations. Miss Sanders made her musical debut at the Village Vanguard, the unofficial "cradle of folk sing- ers," where Josh White and Burl Ives also began their careers. Bernie Asbel, who sang his songs in the White House for the late President Roosevelt, is nationally known as a writer of folk songs. For Rushing-, Fraternity rushing registration for spring, which began yester- day, will continue between 3 and 5 p.m. daily until Friday, according to Harry Jackson, president of IFC. Registration will take place in the IFC offices on the third floor of the Union. Rushing will begin next Monday, and will continue until Feb. 27. During the rush- ing pe'iod, all fraternities must conclude their entertainments by 8:30 p.m., Jackson stated. On Feb. 28, both rushees and fraternities will sign preference lists and hand them in to the Of- fice of the Director of Student Af- fairs. Pledge dinners will be held on March 3. During the time between the close of rushing activities and the pledge dinners, a period of silence between fraternities and rushees must be maintained, Jackson said. He also emphasized that no man may be initiated into a fraternity unless he has a scholastic average of at least 2 point. Registration is open to all men students regis- tered in the University. A meeting of all fraternity house presidents will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the IFC offices in the Union, Jackson announced. Prize Winners To Be Named Sphinx Meeting ... University as a result of a temper- amental furnace, are in again, this time for keeps. The furnace has beer repaired and the house is "fine, warm, and comfortable" again, a Gamma Phi told The Daily. The women had been barred from their house after Christmas vacation when it was discovered that the furnace was not func- tioning properly and dangerous fumes were being given out.
