SUJNDY; MAC' 5; V4G TH11E MIG111A N 1DA LY PAGE SEVEN Wolverines Drop Second Tilt As Winning Streak Is Snapped' A S SOCAT0)PIaSLAE Seven Rtun Rally Gives Mich iga First" Game, 8-6; Illini Takes Nightcap, 4.3 (Continued from Page 1) field foul line gave the Wolverines two more markers. Chappuis singled home Rosema and after Tomasi hadI struck out, Chappuis scored on Swan- son's double to left. Swanson, him- self, scored the seventh run a moment later on Kell's double to center. For good measure Michigan added a run in the eighth on Swanson's second double with Chappuis, who had walked, aboard. Illini Score in Seventh Block was in constant trouble throughout the game with never an inning lacking base runners. But af- ter the first it was not until the seventh that the Illini managed to score. In that round Eilbracht's dou- ble to left, sandwiched between a walk to Kaires and Nussbaumer's muff of Bob Possehl's liner to center, gave Illinois two runs. The second game was a pitcher's battle for nine cold, cloudy innings between Bliss (Bo) Bowman and Al Scharf. Michigan took the lead in the first as Kell's bunt single, followed by the third baseman's overthrow of first led to a tally. Nussbaumer sac- rificed Kell to third from where he scored when the shortstop elected to throw too late to the plate on Don Robinson's grounder. Thun Added in Fourth{ Another run was added in the fourth on singles by Nussbaumer, Robinson's of the bunt variety, and Chappuis' one-base blow. Michigan's third and final tally was registered in the fifth when, with two gone, Kell singled sharply to right, stole second and scored on the right fielder's muff of Nussbaumer's towering fly. It was in their half of the fifth that Illinois was able to touch Bow- man for a run. Roy Wiedow opened the inning with a walk. Pitcher Al Scharf sent Wiedow scooting to third on a solid single to right. Jack Smi- ley then rapped what looked like a sure hit through short, but Robinson dove for it, caught the ball in his gloved hand and flipped it to Tom- asi for the force on Scharf. The next two batters were quickly retired on easy grounders. Smiley Doubles The seventh saw Illinois peck~ away at Michigan's lead. With two away, Smiley doubled to deep left center. Bob Malley followed with a single to left and the second Illini run came home. In the ninth the score was tied as pinch hitter Mary Lieb hit safely to deep short, was safe on second as Robinson dropped Bowman's throw in ain attempt to force Wiedow on pitchier Scharf's bunt. Irv (Pro) Boim came in to pitch. Pinch-batter Stange walked to load the basecs. Wiedcw scored the tying run as Jer- ry Kaires, batting for Bill Myers, hit into a force play. Michigan failed to score in its half of the tenth and the bottom half of that frame mai,:ed tihe endi of Mich- igan's victory streak.
