M. today in Yost Field House, determined to upset the high-flying Hawkeyes and remain in the title free-for-all. With two defeats already on the record in four games played, the Wolverines will retain only a math- ematical chance for Conference hon- ors if they lose to Pops Harrison's veteran five. By upsetting the Hawks, Michigan could stay in the running, cprovided that the other outfits continue their practice of surprising the favorites. Iowa Rated Tops Coach Bennie Oosterbaan's squad has a hard job cut out for itself against the Iowans, who are curren- ly rated as the number one aggrega- tion in the nation, by virtue of hav- ing overwhelmed eight straight op- ponents. In running up their vic- tory string the Hawks have aver- aged a phenomenal 67.5 points per contest, while holding their foes to a meager 36.1. Boasting three veterans from last year's five, which lost the Confer- ence championship in the closing 70 seconds of the final game of the campaign, plus two former members of a National champion Utah Uni- versity quintet of two years ago, Iowa will enjoy a tremendous advantage in experience over the Wolverines when the two teams take the floor. tonight. Ives Leads Three Veterans The trio of veterans is headed by Dick Ives, leading Conference scorer last winter and unanimous all-Big Ten selection at forward. Ives again is pacing his team in scoring, with a total of 114 tallies in eight games, an average of 14.2 per outing. Co-captains Ned Postels and Jack Spencer are the other two returning members of the first five. Postels teams with Ives at forward, while Spencer holds down a guard posi- tion. The Utah duo is made up of the two Wilkinson brothers, Clayton and Herb. Clayton operates' at center, and is seriously threatening Ives' domination in the scoring column. He has 104 points to date, and has outpointed his teammate. in Iowa's two previous Conference games. Herb pairs up with Spencer at the other guard spot, rounding out the start- ing quintet. Hawkeyes Have Two-Inch Advantage Coach Harrison's first combina- tion will enjoy an approximate two- inch height advantage over the Wol- verines, which should give Iowa am- ple opportunity to use its favorite fast-breaking tactics. The Hawks also probably rate an edge in shoot- ing skill on the basis of their amaz- ing point output. To meet the threat Oosterbaan will adhere to the same lineup which has started the last three contests. Bob Geahan, who ranks second ~1 Big Ten scoring with 40 points in four games, will be at one forward, with John Mullaney at the other. Veteran Don Lund is expected to start at center, and Walt Kell and Don Lindquist at guards complete the first five. Following tonight's tilt, Michigan will trek to Columbus for a return game with Ohio State tomorrow eve- ning. The Bucks took the measure of the Wolverines earlier in the season. winning 44-41 in overtime.. Mama Takes Over! PITTSBURGH, Jan. 18.- (A)-1 Mrs. Fritzie Zivic, mother of three children and wife of the former world welterweight champion now in the Army, disclosed today she had been granted a promoter's license in Penn- sylvania. "It's just until Fritzie comes home," she explained. MERT CHURCH Returning Star oSwim Again For Michig~an Mowerson To Start Against Northwestern "Bob Mowerson, former member of the 1936-37 swimming team which captured National honors in 1936, and both National and Conference Championships in 1937, will swim against Northwestern tomorrow," Matt Mann jubilantly announced to- day. Admitting that he was very pleas- ed to have another freestyler of the same calibre as Church and Fries to place in the relays, Mann explained that Mowerson had just returned from the South Pacific, having been discharged from the Army because of malaria, and is now working for his Masters. Mowerson, who swam on the same team as Tomski, Emmett, and Kir- ar, was accustomed to swimming all distances in the freestyle. However he was most proficient as anchor man in the 300 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle relay. Mann declared that the addition of another distance freestyler to the 1945 Wolverine roster will probably mean a lot of unexpected points, be- All students wishing admission to the Northwestern Meet on Satur- day, January 20, must present their identification cards and pay fifty cents. The big question in the Wildcat meet is still the outcome of the back- stroke heats. Northwestern, which centers most of its power around Bob Tribble, last season's Big Ten Champ in the 150 yard backstroke event %nd Jack Sampson and John- ny Whiston also promising back- strokers, will try to notch up most of their points in this delpartment. Opposing them will be Wolverines: Gordon Pulford, Bob Munson, and Jack Pulkman. Pulford, who in the Great Lakes meet was entered in the opening leg of the 300 yard medley and the 400 yard freestyle relay, be- cause of Mowerson's return to the freestyle relay, will probably be able to go back to his old specialty in the 150 yard backstroke. Munson. who is voted by Mann as one of the most improved men on the squad will most likely enter the 300 yard medley relay, while Pulk- man will team up with Pulford to try and break the Wildcat Backstroke strength.
