Newhouser, giving a half dozen hits, helped win his own game by batting in two runs with a fourth inning single with the bases full. Roy Cullenbine hit his second homer of the season in the same inning off Milt Haefner, who gave seven hits in taking his fourth defeat of the year. Newhouser's shutout was his sec- ond this season and the seventh for Detroit pitchers. Torres Triples Gil Torres' three-run triple into the right field corner off rookie Art Houtteman was Washington's big blow in the opener, giving Roger Wolff his fourth victory. The defeat was charged to Paul (Dizzy) Trout, who retired from the game in the sixth inning with a pulled muscle in his side. Trout was expected to be out of action for about four days. Trout gave just two hits in the first five innings before the Nats got to him for two runs in the sixth. George Case walked to open the in- ning and scored as Joe Kuhel doubled to right center. Fermin Guerra sac- rificed but was safe when Trout fielded the ball poorly and was charg- ed with an error. Trout retired from the game at that point but Kuhel scored after the catch of" George Binks' fly to Cramer. Tigers Bunch Blows The nightcap was a first class southpaw hurling duel between New- houser and Haefner but the Tigers bunched three of their hits in the fourth for all their runs. Cullenbine led off the inning with his homer. After York grounded out Roger Cra- mer was hit by a pitched ball and Outlaw singled to right. Jimmy (Skeeter) Webb forced Outlaw butl Paul Richards walked to fill the] bases and Newhouser punched a! single over second to send two runs across.
