The Wolverines, strong favorites to oust the Hoosiers from the con- ference crown at Chicago. Feb. 19, won six events, lost one and took one forfeit. Buckeye rimt owa, 56-42 COLUMBUS, O., Feb. 12.-(P)_- Ohio State University completed to- night the job of turning the Big Ten basketball race into a wide open five- team a fai by walloping 'Iowa's Hawkeyes 56 to 42. It was the sec- ond defeat for Iowa in as niany nights at the hands of the Buckeyes. Ohio State's triumph served to boost Purdue into first place in the Big Ten but it left Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin and the Buckeyes themselves only a half game-either one victory or one defeat-behind the Boilermakers. The Bucks jumped into a lead aft- er only seven minutes of play to- night and never were headed al- though the count was tied. a couple of times in the first half. Elroy Hirsch Paces Second Half Spurt CHICAGO, Feb. 12.-( P)- After being held on even terms in the first six minutes, Michigan cut loose with a scoring spree to overwhelm the University of Chicago, 74 to 41, to- night before a small student crowd at the U. of C. field house. It wasj the Wolverines' fourth Big Ten tri- umph in 11 games. The Maroons took an early 5-4 lead, then pushed ahead again at 7-6 before Michigan's attack began func- tioning as forward Dave $track hit the net for. five baskets and a free throw. He was Michigan's top scorer with 15 points. Chicago's Fred DeGraw, however, took high honors, collecting six field goals and five free tosses while Tom King, until last night the Confer- ence's leading scorer, was held to a meager total of six. Center Elroy Hirsch paced the Wolverines in the second half spurt with five fielders for a game total of 13 points. After capturing the lead in the first half Michigan never relin- quished it and had a 34-14 advantage at the intermission. The loss was Chicago's sixth in the Conference this season, as against no victories. The Maize and Blue got off to a, good start with Bill Cooley, Heini Kessler and Ace Cory, by winning a, close race over the Wildcats in the, 300-yard medley relay. Paul Maloney, Wolverine distance star, took the 220-yard free style over his team- mate, Achilles Pulakus and Wildcat Kick Neff, who won the event in the initial meet. Wol- verine divers John Krygoski and Bob Calhoun fared rather poorly against the fine- exhibitions of Northwest- ern's Ronny Thumble, winner of the event in the previous dual meet, and Bob Gunderson. The 100-yard freestyle event was won by 50-yard Conference champ Mert Church of Michigan in :52:7, six tenths of a second off the Big Ten mark. He nosed out teammate Chuck Fries while Northwestern's Rudy Smalz placed a rather weak third. Heini Kessler nosed out Wildcat Jim Walsh to chalk up a first place for Michigan in the 200-yard breast stroke. Maloney Wins 220 and 440 Bob Tribble of Northwestern re- peated his previous meet perform- ance by taking the 150-yard back- stroke over teammate Dick Neff and Michigan's Johnny McCarthy. The Wolverines were paced by freshman Paul Maloney who, besides winning the 220, copped the 440-yard mara- thon. Michigan's 400-yard free style relay combination of Branch, Kop- pin, Cory and Pulakus, outclassed the Wildcats to take the event for the Maize and Blue. By their excellent showing last night, the Wolverines will be the lo- gical favorites to capture the team championship in the Western Con- ference meet next week at Evenston, Ill. With such stalwarts as Church, Fries, Maloney and Kessler, the Wol- verines should bring the Conference title back to Ann Arbor once more.
