The Wolverine baseball team scored three runs to Grosse Ile's one in a contest that was just two outs short of being an official ballgame. With the rain coming down in torrents, the game was finally called after the naval base pitcher, Bob Hall, was hit a't the base of the skull by a pitched ball. In the four and one-third innings of play, the Wolverines got four hits and no errors, while the Sailors pounded out four hits and two errors. Hackstadt Makes First Appearance Jack Hackstadt made his debut on the mound for the Wolverines and pitched the first three innings in which the Sailors nicked him for two hits. These two safties came in the sec- ond when Pete Commondorous con- nected and hit a high ball into cen- ter field and the next man up, Bob Spangler, sent one right over second base. Al Willers, who pitched one inning against Iowa, hurled the last inning and one-third giving up the other two hits to the Sailors. Chet Zelinski, the naval base's star catcher, led off the fourth with a hot double into left center field.' "Pepper" Ray then got a base hit over second, but the Wolverines caught him off base as Moore came up to the plate and they then exe- cuted a fast double play as Pete Com- mondorous grounded to Blanchard who threw to Ketterer to Swanson and the inning ended with the Sail- ors still not scoring. Michigan's hitting was pretty well divided up with two hits in the first by Mike Farnyk and Bruce Blan- chard. Farnyk scored on Blanchard's hit after Ketterer sacrificed. Willers Gets Extra Base Hit Pitcher Al Willers got the only Wolverine extra base hit in the sec- ond when he blasted one into center- field. Bob Nussbaumer accounted for the other hit in the fourth when he hit a sharp-grounder into centerfield. The Wolverines renew their Big Ten rivalry as they journey to Cham- paign for a doubleheader Saturday. This two-game series will close the Illinois season. Two freshman hurlers, Howard Judson and Lou Possehl will probably start for the Illini against Bowman and Hirsch for the Wolverines. Humes Shoot for Mile Mark2 This week the Hume twins, Bob and Ross, will again be shooting for a record in the mile run. They might have achieved this goal Saturday had not the high winds hindered their running. The two are possible en- tries in either the half or two-mile runs, where they will again encounterl Jack Exler of Purdue. The squad as a whole, excepting those who are unable to make the trip, came out of Saturday's meetl in fine shape, and this four-cornered affair will give Coach Doherty an- other chance to see what he will havel in the Conference meet which comes May 27.
