Ohio's only safety was a single to right by third baseman, Don Grate, with two down in the first in- ning. Buckeye pitcher, Don Maxa, pitched on even terms with Hirsch for seven innings, giving up one unearned run in the fifth, and taming the Wolverine hitters into almost complete submission. How- ever, in the eighth, Michigan fi- nally found the range to drive across four runs on five hits, three of them extra-base blows. First Run Is 'Unearned The Wolverines tallied their run in the fifth stanza without the benefit of a hit, as right fielder, Bob Nuss- baumer opened the inning with a walk, was sacrificed to second on catcher Bob Stevenson's perfect bunt, and came all the way home while the Ohio State infield was try- ing to complete a double play on Mike Farnyk's smash. Farnyk led off the big eighth with a single to center and was moved down to second on Charlie Ketterer's sacrifice. Shortstop Bruce Blanch- ard then got his third hit of the day, slicing a double down the left field line to drive in Farnyk. Af- ter Bill Gregor lifted an easy fly to left, center-fielder Don Lund, dropped a Texas League two-bag- ger into left center, sending' in Blanchard with the second tally. Swanson Blasts a Triple First baseman Elmer Swanson then steped, up and laced a terrific line drive drive down the third base line and slid safely into third with a triple, scoring Lund. Nussbaumer promptly single over second to bring Swanson in with the fourth run of the frame. Stevenson ended the raly with a lazy fly to center. Hirsch had the Buckeyes eating out of his hand from start to finish, being in trouble in only two innings. In the top of the second, a walk and a hit batsman put two runners on, but, the next two hitters grounded into easy force plays. In the ninth, Ohio State loaded the bases on two passes and an error by Blanchard, but Hirsch got the last hitter, Walter Walhstrom, on a high bounder in front of the plate. Stevenson Squelches Attempted Steal The Buckeyes also had single men on in the first, fifth and sev- enth frames but Stevenson erased one on an attempted steal and the other two died in their tracks. Hirsch issued four bases on balls and fanned three. The victory gave Coach Ray Fish- er's squad a Conference record of four victories in as many outings and a season total of eight wins in nine starts. The only loss was a 3-2 de- cision to Camp Perry last Sunday. Today, the Wolverines will play their third game in as many days, tangling with the Grosse Ile Naval Base nine at Detroit.
