Couzens Hall Police Launch Drive Against The state wide canpaign against motorists guilty of driving with faulty brakes or other defective equipment is going full blast, Ann Arbor Police Chief Sherman H. Mortenson said yesterday. The drive was launched after state traffic officials became alarmed at a threatened state-wide increase in traffic accidents. Chief Mortenson stated that a re- cent spot check conducted by State Police revealed that approximately 86,000 Michigan passenger cars are in poor mechanical condition. In urging drivers to have their cars placed in safe driving condition immediately, Chief Mortenson called attention to the fact that cars are wearing out more rapidly now, and should be checked regularly and fre- quently by a competent garage or service station repairman. A pamphlet, entitled "You're only a Foot from Trouble," will be handed to every motorist stopped for a traf- fic law violation. A brake test will also be given by law enforcement of- ficers. Posters carrying the same warning as the pamphlet and urging motorists to have their brakes checked are now being displayed by garages, service stations and parts dealers throughout the state.
