THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, APRIL 2, 1944 Plunging Necklines mill K -WTote Newest Spring Dresses Tiny Sleeves Add Charm Buttons, Ruffles, Clear Colors Take Spotlight Deep necklines and tiny sleeves are this season's prerequisites for a suc- .essful date dress. Many dresses made in this way can be converted to "double-duty" by wearing them with blouses for everyday duties and without blouses for gayer times in the evening. That old standby, the high neck- line, will still be seen, but rapidly taking its place are the newer and more sensational deep necklines. "Newest of the new" is the "U" neck- line which is making its appearance from coast to coast. It is one of the outstanding fashions of the times, and can make even the simplest dress a dress that will go places. This new neckline is not only for dressy clothes but also for sports and day dresses. Square Neckline Effective A square neckline with flat bands 'turning it into a "T' is highly effec- tive on a dress which is dark in color, and the steep decollette of the "nak- ed neckline" on a black dress is guar- anteed to create a favorable impres- sion any spring evening. Small sleeves which have become such a big fashion are, for the most part, set right in the bodice, creating an almost sleeveless effect. Still pop- ular is the three-quarter length sleeve which can be pushed up to elbow length. Buttons Replace Zippers "Button, button, who has the but- ton?" Button dresses will be all over the place this season, as fashion's answer to the zipper shortage. In many cases, buttons will be the only decorations necessary, and whether they are placed all the way down the back of the dress, or go across the waist and down one side of the dress, creating a much smarter effect, they're still fashionably accepted. A dress no matter how lovely it is in itself, contend this season's fash- ion-setters, can be made more notice- able with the addition of a bow, and huge bows are being stuck on any- where now. Ruffles Are Popular Ruffles, besides being used to give a flattering neckline, will also be seen decorating wrists, pockets and should- er yokes. Shades of purplish red-,fuchsia, wild grape, magenta-will take top New Blouses Dress Suit 'up or ow The perfect touch to that new, spring suit are the new blouses that are being offered to the shopper in a wide assortment of colors and styles. It has often been remarked that a blouse can either dress a suit up or down and with that idea in mind we can survey the entire field of new blouses. A frilly blouse can change any casual outfit into a dressy, femi- nine outfit suitable for any occasion. Variations of WhiteI The year has brought forth many' variations of the classic white, V- necked, long-sleeved blouse. One that you might consider for the new Easter suit is a blouse in polka-dotted rayon crepe with a becoming bow tie and long-button-at-the-cuff sleeves. Or if you prefer a plain but pert blouse of rayon broadcloth with saw- tooth edging down the front and around the cuffs. For your dressy moments when you want to look completely sweet and petite there is a weskit blouse in rayon gabardine with small pointed revers and eyelet embroidery edging it everywhere. Or you might consider a demure candy-striped cotton blouse with a single ruffle down the front and a double one around the cuffs or if you are the frilly, feminine type of coed there is a frothy white batiste blouse with a tiny black bow and lace ruffling the neck, front and the sleeves. Dickies Solve Problem And what with the laundry situa- tion what it is and the laziness of coeds when it comes to ironing blous- es there are the new dickies which solve the problem completely. No longer are they limited to the tradi- tional white Peter Pan collar style but are now available in every pastel color with lace and other frilly trims. The, newest thing this year are the jabots that can be easily removed from the dickey either to make it look dressy or tailored. ; >., ': . . ,, : . Perfumes Help Shops Show Boost Coed's Novel Jewelry Smart Spring Belts Cheer Up Coed's Tired Winter Wardrobe :.4 4 4' "I. g orate By DONA GUIMARAES Perfumes are always morale boosters . . . and the spring and East- er season gives a good excuse to try out a new fragrance. Not only old standbys, but brand new issues are in the ranks of per- fume favorites . . . and the new ones are made by those people from whom perfume and colognes are the last things to expect. Famous dressmak- ers, hat designers and specialty shops have taken to manufacturing scents . . . perhaps named after a new fashion trend . .. or just with a number . . . but all carrying a fam- ous name. An English "Menace" , An English designer, who did the Queen's wardrobe for her American tour, has put out asleek, sophisticated perfume called "Menace" that just asks for a dramatic evening. This1 same designer also has a more de- mure favorite "White Shoulders" which is especially made for the off{ -the shoulder evening dresses. "Tabu," the long-lasting, heady perfume now has a sister . . . and this new member is aimed particular- ly for blondes . . . "Platine" is it's name . . . but no doubt brunettes will use it too. It has a light spicyj smell . . . but underlying it's frivolity is a hint of knowingness . . . "Pla- tine" will soon be running neck and neck with "Tabu" for popularity, ex- perts agree. Royalty in Perfume Lilacs in a spring garden is the theme of the ever popular "Duchess, of York" . . . which comes in small gilt topped crown shaped bottles. Both cologne and perfume are avail- able in this scent. Another perfume put out by the same manufacturer is "Stradivari" after the famous violin nmaker. A bit more piercing . . . but with subtle sweetness underneath. "Shocking" and "Sleeping" are also among the spring perfumes. Made by a famous coutourier, they have the same sparkle and brilliance that has made her custom made clothes so well known. "Shocking'" comes in bottles shaped in the form of a dressmaker's dummy, while "Sleep- ing" comes in a twisted bottle in the image of a candlestick. Characteristic colors for the wrappings are "Shock- ing pink" and "Sleeping blue." Another fragrance new this spring is "Escape" . . . a light sophisticated esent with the magic of a medieval tapestry behind it. Packaged in a blue satin "tower" with a golden key to "unlock" it. this perfume will un- doubtedly become well-liked. Scarce Metals Used In New Colbinations Jewelry manufacturers, notwith- standing WPB regulations, are man- aging to turn out pieces worthy of any spring shopper's attention. New colors and textures arise from ingenious combinations of scarce metals. A bracelet, on which a school of fish swims, is made of copper and dull nickel, and a set of earring-! fishes completes the picture. Flowered Earrings You've adopted the "small head look" and you're not satisfied with your old earrings? Find a pair of big ones with fake jewels or even better there are flowers made of ceramic. Lapel pins, too, are big this season, and they're no longer confined to the lapel. A swish sterling silver daisy adds to the smartness of your simple clothes. Filigree lace of gold bright- ened with a rosette of small jewels goes on the shoulder or the decolle- tage of the sophisticated black. Silver Bands in Vogue A bracelet, a mesh band* an inch and a half wide, has a cluster of jewels in the center. Narrow silver bands, in unlimited numbers, grace fashionable wrists. Jewelry buttons adorn some of the must tailored suit. A grey pin stripe suit sports three sterling wild ducks in lieu of buttons. Popular disapproval forbids serviceI emblems, wings, anchors and the like, on lapels and sweaters, but there is no objection to advertising your loyalty on a muffler or glove.I If your closet at home is harboring father's suit with the shiny pants or brother's outgrown suit it can be re- made into a new suit for yourself. By altering the jacket and cutting up the trousers into a skirt a newv spring suit can be yours at only a slight cost. For those who bemoan the loss of the long jacket, this is a perfect outlet. Smart women this season are mak- ing the most of the clothes they have. Old wardrobes can be made new and exciting just by changing the em- phasis. A clever way to do this is to add one of the colorful belts that are being shown. One of the most clever arrange- ments is a bibelot hung on two sad- dle-leather belts. Putty-colored cape- skin gloves complete the ensemble. For wear with slacks a saddle- stitched bag may be slung from a pigskin belt. This changes last year's slack suit into a colorful costume. It also is handy for cosmetics or a wal- let when out hiking. To treat tion trick emphasize a slim waist line your skirt and blouse combina- to a navy-blue suede belt. A to play with this particular 1 ___- __.__ belt is to attach a short piece of gros- grain ribbon to it and pin antique watch fobs on it. For summer dress a pink shantung belt is appropriate. It will empha- size a slim waist line and make it look about 24 inches. One of the stores suggests that you wind a watch chain around the belt to achieve a more startling effect. Double the wearing time of the suits in your wardrobe with the use of gilets, variation of the dickey. Little pieces of left-over material can be put to use by turning them into collars and cuffs or vestees and then pepping them up with bright red or green edges or making them dainty with fine lace or crochet. Fresh crisp touches are everywhere. . .. % ,., S ' ' .. 0 . Pin righten' Lapel Lover's Knot, Ear To brighten the lapel of your spring suit or your dark bag, wear a lover's knot and ear pin of gold-plated cer- amic with a dab of red. Ceramic pins are clever and patriotic, too, for they help conserve much-needed metal. Big, gold loop earrings will bring out the gypsy in you and add the finishing touch to your spring en- semble. For those with a taste for daintier earrings, tiny butterflies of silver filigree have been made by the Mexicans.
