Straight Lines
Lead for Spring
Tailors Design Coats
For Women of Varied
Figures, Types, Ages
So this is the year for a new coat-
lucky girl! You can choose straight
lines or buy something fitted and
still be smiledupon by Madam Style.
Box coats, chesterfield or other-
wise, are as popular for spring and
summer as they are for fall and
winter. They are just right for the
too tall or too thin or too short or
too need a rye-crisp. They even suit
the "too younglor too old."
While lines remain the same, col-
ors and materials change as snow
turns to rain and rain to sunshine.
Blacks, 'browns and greys give way
to red, yellow and blue. Deep purple
is as popular in coats as it is in suits
and dresses.
Coats Double-, Single-Breasted
Double-breasted coats will vie with
single-breasted models for a place in
your wardrobe. Large, white pear)
buttons are the current favorite.
Occasionally covereda buttons match-
ing the material 'of the coat will take
your eye.
A new note in material is the
fluffy, cotton-candy soft fabric that
truly melts your heart. For a sharp
contrast there is the sleek, cyllindri-
cal gabardine in twill or otherwise.
Belted Coats Smart
If you have the willowy winsome-
ness that can wear one of these new
belted coats you can blossom out
with something that is sweeping
clothing stores all over the country.
They come in three-quarter T ;ngth
or go all the way. You can button
them around your throat or let the
collar slip back with a charming
casual air. These belted coats accent
waists that are tiny and compliment
those that aren't. They are available
in any of yourfavorite colors.
If. you don't" really need a new
coat, but are longing for a spring-
cheerer-upper how about indulging
in one of the practical all-weather
coats. To be really spring-sprightly

Grooming Problems to Fore
t
}
i
Suddenly it's spring-the calendar
confirms it, but the mirror reflects
the end of winter, limp locks condi-
tioned by the Ann Arbor damp, fair
skin not quite so fair, and the body
beautiful bursting the seams of that
unpressed gray skirt.
Spring's a pretty disheartening
prospect with the mirror's present
outlook, but a bit of effort will put
you in the front line of the Easter
parade.
Good Grooming Key to Beauty
Good grooming is the key to beauty'
in any season and spring provides the
needed additional incentive; so when
you store your fur coat, take out a
new set of beauty principles.
Your feather bob is probably in the
last stages of atrophy, and it's time
to decide whether you're going to
adopt "that new flat-top look" or
have it refeathered. The basic cut
is important whatever style you
choose. Don't entrust your future
coiffeur to the girl down the hall
who's an absolute whiz with the
shears or you'll spend the spring
waiting for it to grow out again.
Have it done by a professional bar-
ber, and don't let him pull the old
"this is just to even it up" stuff on
you.
Hairbrush Essential
Brushing is a better tonic than
anything you can find in a bottle.
The sheen of truly healthy hair,
why not look for one of those satin-
finished new-comers. A beautiful
one winked at us from a shop win-
dow yesterday. It was royal-blue and
promised to brighten the gloomiest
of weary-weather days.
Match Grey Suit
Maybe you will find a coat to
match that grey-flannel suit you
bought last year. Of if you have been
saving your pennies you may be :ble
to buy the three-piece outfit you
have been longing for.
Have fun on that shopping spree,
but remember, a war-bond is the
most fashionable purchase you can
make.
well-brushed and scrupulously clean,
far surpasses that of any rinse on the
market.
Your skin isn't much of a problem.
It's simply a matter of creaming the
roughness away, with an extra lubri-
cation for sandpapery elbows and
knees and plenty of soap and water
cleansing. That depressing winter
sallowness is best eliminated by cold,
cold water rinses. Until your skin
responds, you can camouflage it nice-
ly with a new foundation-a pink
wash that creates the illusion of ra-
diant health.j
Diet Important
Those unsightly spots are the pro-
duct of too many cokes and too much
chocolate. You need no urgings, be-
cause enough has been said to con-
vince you that you are what you eat.
Because you are, you can't assume a
defeatist attitude toward your excess
poundage either by explaining it as
just your nature or excusing your-
self on the grounds that you're a
growing girl. If your metabolism is-
n't up to par, Health Service will give
you a basal and if necessary, thy-
roid. If you've just been indulging
your weakness for rich food, it's up to
you.
Your diet should be a sensible one,
planned with the advice of a doctor.
After that, -it's your problem. It
doesn't mean going without lunch
and eating an extra slice of bread at
dinner; it means lots of vegetables
and no starchy desserts, potatoes,
and the like.
Exercise for Health
Exercise for the sake of form .takes;
different forms. Riding, horse and
bike, are good, swimming's as pleas-
ant as it is effective, -and the WAA
offers a well-planned set of exer-
cises in its "Fun and Fitness" book-
let.
Fitness, and the beauty that ac-
companies it, is not only a matter of
self-respect. Fitness is required by
the demands of the day, and health
is your first responsibility.
Original' Rayons
To Replace Nylons
Since time immemorial women
have been changing their minds, and
this year's assortment of hosiery of-
fers them no excuse to stop doing so.
Although nylon and silks are gone
for the duration, the hosiery manu-
facturers are offering many varieties
for "Mylady" to wear on her legs.
Among the season's most novel
novelties are the rayon hose which
appear in shocking shades of yellow,
pink, red, blue, violet, white and
black. These hose can be valuable
complements to your Easter ensem-
ble. Imagine wearing a lovely English
lavender outfit with contrasting ac-
cessories of yellow - of which bright
yellow hose are not the least impor-
tant.
But then if you really want to be
practical, white hose are ideal for
wearing for hospital work or for roll-
ing bandages. So you see, you can
be both practical and original at the
same time.
Also in the vogue this season are
seamless stockings. The manufactur-
ers claim that these hose relieve the
wearer of "worries about seams that
slice and squirm." They are made in
both cotton and rayon.
Mesh hose are the .answer to any
college woman's prayer. They look
smart and neat; they fit around the
ankles; and furthermore they don't
snag, run or get holes. They are
presented in the smart shades of
cinnamon, dusky pink and sunset
beige.
Colorful felt glasses cases made
into the shape of masks, owls and
animal figures have been successfully
used to show off the spectacles worn
by eight out of ten women.
The desired figure can be traced
on to the felt which can be purchased
in various striking colors. After they
are cut out and sewed together they
make an original case for a com-
monplace article.I

Your favorite Easter-parader will
be stepping down the avenue this
year shod in the latest thing in shoes,
bought at the expense of her Number
1 airplane stamp.
Since the beginning of shoe ra-
tioning, women have been forced to
consider their choice of shoes care-
fully, since that new pair will have to
last a long time. Because of this,
the sensible, sturdy type of shoe has
become practically a necessity, but
women still reserve the right to at
least one pair of frivolous shoes.
Low-Cut Vamp Featured"
The newest of these dress shoes
has a low-cut vamp as its outstand-
ing feature. They come with or with-
out heels and toes, and are usually
embellished with some sort of bow.
Or they may have ankle straps in
any number of variations. These
shoes come in the perennial spring
favorite of shiny black patent leath-
er, or Navy blue, or any other color
you may wish to brighten up your
Easter outfit.
Other dress shoes run along more
conservative lines with the classic
pump coming to the fore again. A
great boon to tall girls lies in the
versatile flat-heeled step-in which
may be worn to work or on a date.
Shortage of Saddle Shoes
For sports, brogues have become
most popular, both because of the
lack of two-tone saddle shoes and
the necessity for shoes that will
stand up under the wear and tear of
the campus and wairwork. Manu-
facturers of non-rationed shoes with
composition or rope soles and fabric
bodies are becoming more skillful
in putting out durable sports shoes,
and an unlimited number of these
can be bought and used for variety
in your sports shoe wardrobe.
For formal wear, the ballet-slipper
shoe has been featured in the new
desire-for ultra-femininity. With the
disappearance of gold and silver slip-
pers for evening, tinted ones have
been pressed into use. These come
in a real rainbow of colors, so that
a perfect match to your gown is pos-
sible.

Recent Ann Arbor weather has
proven the necessity of raincoats, for
protection against not only rain, but
snow and fog as well.
Many of this spring's raincoats will
be made of weather-proofed rayon
and gabardine. New and different
will be "rain-hecks" made of checked
rayon taffeta. Cotton poplins will
also be popular.
Weather-wise girls will be able to
find wraparounds, fly-front classics
and smart double-breasted coats to
defeat the rain.
An all-wool, stitched-brim fisher-
man's hat makes an attractive fin-
ishing touch. Also popular and prac-
tical are ear-flap caps. Made to
order for those who like babushkas
are rain-kerchiefs of water-repellent
rayon.

Femininity Unites with Masculine
Severity Creating Fashion Trends
/ J,:
r t;
Spring Fever?
Match the season
with something
NEW
By SERENE SHEPPARD
A curious combination of two age-
old conflicts have merged into what
is now our present fashion trend.
It is the conflict between complete
femininity and a masculine severity.
The success of the modern shopper
depends upon the ability to recog-
nize the amalgamation of these two
opposite ideas.
The suit, which is still the favorite
spring outfit, clearly portrays this
modern trend. The skirt is longer
and narrow. The jacket is a nip-in
jacket, shorter and more severe than
last year's, or it may be a box jacket
to hide the hips. Newer still is the
new type bolero jacket which is fitted
and buttoned to the waistline or left
open to show the silk scarf tied
around the waist.
The suit itself is not feminine in
style perhaps because of the con-
servation of material. In spite of
this severity the colors are softly ap-
pealing and feminine. The new
washed out naturals, the pumice and
sandstone, the colorful lemon yellow,
the tiny checks, and the thin stripes
that merge into one shade from the
distance are all evidences of the fem-
inine influence.
The hair is worn flat and severe,
without the massive curls and fluffy
bangs of a few years ago, and the
hats are small and exquisite. There
are the charming half hats, the deli-
cate skull caps, and snoods, while
many of the new spring hats go back
to the childhood ribbon streamers
and toast colored straws.
Evening gowns have been replaced
by the short dinner dress with the
cut out sleeves and the extreme
nekcline. To replace the utter sim-
plicity of this gown, there are flow-
ers. Everywhere one looks there are
flowers. They are worn like jew'els
in the hair, at the waist, in the
pockets, and even jabots of them
have been made to be worn in the
neckline of the spring suit.
