This year the order of the day will be suits and more suits. Despite wartime restrictions this year's suits will not take a backsea to those pictured in yesteryear' fashion magazines. Manufacturers have taxed their ingenuity to the limit and have placed on the marke a dozen different styles in plaids checks and solid colors in both tai- lored and dressy models. The best bet for any coed and one that neatly solves the problem of a new spring coat is the three-piece suit. The coat can be worn ove other outfits and still maintain it smartness. New Collarless Suits The new collarless suit is offered in various materials and is especially smart in gabardine. These suits ar not limited in color and are avail able in a wide array of lush pastel including yellow, blue, violet and th new shade shocking pink. For those who want to get awa from the tailored look there are the new dressy suits, truly feminine i every detail. The long, hip-length jacket is forsaken for the shorte jacket and with shirred detail on the shoulders and at the waist thi type of suit can be worn for ay occasion. The buttons on this typ of suit are truly unusual. Jeweled buttons, painted buttons and others in all sizes and shapes make the out fit unusual and provide a pleasan change for - the coed whose close contains plain, tailored suits. Another innovation this Spring i the weskit suit. A straight skir topped by a short sleeveless jacke Sweaters Continue To Be Universal Favorites of Coed The universal fondness for sweat ers has recently developed into thei adoption for year - round wear whether for protection from chil winter winds or damp spring breezes Now is the time, especially for th college girls, to rejuvenate your as sorted selection of washed-out, bagg sweaters. The advent of Easter an spring is enough to make anyon long for a change in wardrobe, an the colors in which the sweaters ma be had reflect the gay mood o: spring. Such new Easter colors as water melon red, mint green, lilac, an Chinese blue lead the choice fo something different and refreshin in the way of color. Spring seem to bring out the bright-color com plex in everyone, and that feeling i even more prevalent in ,.this third war-time spring. Again, sweaters are being worn no only for sport, but for dress and eve ning wear as well. The latest rag for cap-sleeves has been carried ou in the more formal styles, with dif ferent necklines adding a new touch too. One of the most popular of thes necklines is the once-sporty "crew' neck. Other formal sweaters a being worn with the new short eve ning skirts. d. Plaid Solid in either a matching or contrasting shade would rate high on any list of smart clothes. Worn with either a tailored blouse or one of the fancier types this is a good outfit for casual ewear. The jacket is a replica of the regular men's vest and can be worn either buttoned or unbuttoned. t That Well-Tailored Look s For those who still desire the old standby of a good tailored suit there are some very nice ones in almost any1 t material. Saddle stitching aroundt the collar and down the front of the suit makes a particularlyrattractive outfit with that well-tailored look. e The jackets are found irn either the a traditional three-button style withj lapels or the jacket with the cardigan r effect. s A spring suit is a must for any, coed. It can be worn through spring, and on into the summer months. I They can be worn for seasons to S come and by changing the buttons e or piping the jacket in a contrasting - color what was this year's new suit s can also serve for next year.; e --_ ; y Stamp-Free; Shoes Are Easy s On Eyes, Feet y The unrationed shoe-that godsend eto the American woman, besides ful- filling her desire to purchase more ithan theallotted two pairs per year, - is helping her uphold the reputation t that American women have the pret- tiest feet in the world. Since rationing, nearly every woman t has been faced with the problem of ,"Is this pair of shoes worth one of _my stamps, or should I buy some- thing which is more sensible and which will wear longer?". Common sense tells her the answer, yet there is something within her that makes her buy the frivolous shoe, that will, look so nice with her short-sleeved dress, and then to talk dad or broth- - er out of buying a new pair of shoes r so that she can use his stamp for a pair of really good ones. l The ration-free shoe solves the problem, ,making available many e styles in many colors without the, - need of giving up that precious stamp. Y These shoes are for the most part in-, d expensive, and the soles of rope, e wood, felt or fabric, have been tested d and proved to give good wear. y Flattering new styles, suitable for f play and dress appear daily in the, shop windows. Among them are - white sling pumps with colored plas- d tic soles, gabardine-topped espad- r rilles with ribbed hemp soles, multi- g colored fabric shoes with baby ank- s let strapsand rope soles, crossed; - bands of gabardine with homasote s soles, and wedge sling pumps dressed d up with a bow or an ankle strap and rope soles. t - If you are a fairly good knttier, e you can probably qualify for owner- t ship of a patchwork sweater. They're - not only new, but they belong almost , exclusively to those who "knit their e own." Save all your scraps of yarn " and knit them into squares to be e sewn together. Or if you prefer, knit - it like an argyle with blocks of any shape and size. Chintz, Cotton Fo"rials Are nexpensive Moonlight and roses and formal dances seem to be aiding Dan Cupid, war or no war. Dances mean dresses and dresses mean dollars and since there is us- ually a shortage of both (at least it seems that way to a coed) let's be practical about the whole thing. Chintz, or cotton in other forms, is the answer to the problem. What could be lovelier than a large skirt that crinkles and crackles while you walk? You can match the flowers your date isn't allowed to send you by choosing a fanciful fab- ric full of roses, daffodils, or blue violets. You can find an off-the- shoulder gown and be a belle from the South (South University any- way.) Gingham checks in black and white or blue and white will make you cute and coy. Gingham trimmed with white pique "couldn't be sweet- er." Of course organdy is still the ideal spring or summer evening dress and red and white or yellow are the most popular colors. Dotted swiss with navy blue or red background is something to consider seriously. And if you're feeling in especially fine form how about some- thing in silk jersey. Net and marquisette in white, pink or blue are the sort of things we long for but seldom find-well, the war won't last forever. Make yourtmotto, Bright and Beautiful, and pray some- body gets a leave or furlough in time for the big night. Clever Compacts Are Still Available The wartime restrictions that have been placed upon manufacturers have forced them to drastically re- duce the variety of compacts but even so there are still some very nice ones available that would gladden the heart of any coed. There is a flapjack type absolutely tremendous which can carry the av- erage woman's week supply of lip- stick, powder, foundation cream, mascara and anything else she might need. Nothing nicer than one of these with your name engraved in huge sprawling letters on the top. Perfect for a blackout or in movies is the compact that, when opened, lights up. With a compact like this on the market there can never again be a shiny nose. An absolute boon to the emotional femmes who cry in movies (and there are quite a few) no longer will it be necessary to walk out of the movies with a shiny nose and tear stained face. The newest thing in the line of compacts are those made of shiny glazed chintz fashioned like a pouch with a drawstring. The mirror is on the bottom and the bag itself is large enough to hold the coed's favorite cosmetics and possibly a book or two. Sportswear Coeds Choose Clothes For Tennis, Riding Palmer Field, the WAB, the Uni- versity golf course, local riding sta- bles, the arboretum and the island- all will be kept busy as soon as warm weather shows signs of "hanging around" for awhile, and thus the de- mand for suitable sports clothes arises from campus coeds. ISunday morning breakfasts at the Island have been popular for years, even more so since blue jeans and plaid shirts came into their own. Boots come in handy too if the breakfasters contemplate any trial excursions to the water's edge, be- cause there is still plenty of mud in plain sight. Shorts for Tennis Tennis clothes speak for them- selves, all types of tennis dresses and individual shorts and shirts being the accepted costume on the tennis court, with light weight slacks ap- propiate for chilly days. There isn't much anybody can do about heavy riding boots for the equestrienne, but light weightfriding breeches and jodphurs are a welcome relief to the heavier winter outfits. Blouses, open at the neck, and wind- breaker jackets are fine for Spring rides, the latter being shed aftera few minutes of "exercise" on the horse. Softball outfits bring out all sorts of costumes, the consensus of opinion being that all "hep" softball players prefer shorts and shirts to jeans and plaid shirts because of the strenuous workout fly catchers usually have. Slacks Prevent Sunburn Hiking and outing costumes de- pend on the weather, sunny days us- ually requiring covering for the legs if the outdoor girl wishes to avoid the trouble arising from really seri- ous sunburn. Outdoor swimming overcomes the necessity of wearing the regulation cotton swimming suit required for pool adherents, and all sorts of orig- inality can be used this year, the trend being toward plain colors rath- er than huge splashy designs, this a result of wartime saving of dyes. Golfers Prefer Sport Dresses Golf courses are usually devoid of the coed's favorite summer costume, shorts and blouses, because shirt waist dresses and light weight slacks come into their own in this field. Archers, too, feel more at home in shirtwaist dresses although other costumes are not taboo. However, golf and archery are sports in which dresses do not hamper ability, and other costumes can be saved for sports that require greater freedom of motion. The facilities for plenty of sports exercise are available, and so are the clothes. All that is lacking is the balmy Spring day which makes everyone want to forget all about bluebooks and term papers.
