The 21-point performance of Herb Matter largely enabled the Illini to win, but Bob Kelley, quarter-miler, produced a major upset .by outstep- ping Bob Ufer, Michigan's ace run- xier, in the 440. Kelley put on a tre- bnendous spurt to win by five yards 4fter trailing most of the distance. 'The time was 48.9 seconds. Matter gathered his top individual point total by winning three events. the 220-yard dash and low hurdles and broad jump, and tying for first in the high jump. He also tied for second in the pole vault., Iini Win Seven Events This performance enabled the Il- lint to take seven of the 14 events while sharing another. Illinois and Michigan are expected to fight it out alone for the Conference title. The only new meet record went to Michigan mile relay team that shaved off a tenth of a second in a Big Ten Baseball Iowa 18-18, Chicago 2-2. Illinois 13', Ohio State 0. Wisconsin 7-5, Northwestern 0-4. 3:19.5 clocking. The old record was set by the Wolverines in 1938. Cap- tain Dave Matthews, Bob Matney, Willy Glass, and Ufer composed the foursome beating the Illini. Matthews won the mile in the good time of 4:19.4 in front of Seib of Tllinois and Ross Hume of the Michi- gan Humes. Len Alkon took the 100- yard dash in 10.2 nosing out Beker- meier of Illinois with a 15.5-second clocking. Liv Stroia of the Maize and Blue was third. In the 220 Alkon placed second behind Matter, who was timed in 22.3. Don Sternisha, Wolverine freshman took third place, the position he also earned in the century. Half-Mile Goes to Illinois The half-mile furnished a surpris- ing result, when Michigan, pre-meet favorite had to be content with a third place behind Belle and Good- ell of the Champaignites. The Wol- verine was Johnny Roxborough and Beiles' Time was 1:55.4. The other Michigan triumphs came in the pole vault, where Bob Segula upset Matter at 12 feet 6 inches, and in the shot put, in which frosh George Kreager came through with a heave of 44 feet 11%/4 inches to win over Illini Mails. Captain Ben Smith, No. 1 Wol- verine singles and doubles man, de- feated Northwestern's Captain, John Stoltz, 3 to 0 in the top singles match. Then Smith, low man with a one over par 73, teamed with Bob Fife to down Northwestern's No. 1 doubles team of Stoltz and William- son, 21/2 to 1/2. Phil Marcellus of the Wolverines beat Duers of the Wildcats, 2-1, for the only other Michigan win. How- ever, Bill Ludolph tied his Purple opponent, Abrahams, 11/-112. Fife lost his singles match to Stew- art of Northwestern, 3-0. The re- maining individual tilt was won by Lutter of the Wildcats over "Bonny" Bonisteel, 21-1.
