Yesterday, a one-time Wolverine National wrestling champion at 145 pounds dropped in to see the boys at Yost Field House and couldn't resist the urge to take another crack at it. The good-looking, dark-haired young man was Harold Nichols, Michigan mat captain in 1939 and National Collegiate champion that season. Although four years have elapsed, Harold still weighs in at 154 pounds. Now a physical instructor with the Army Air Forces at Mitchell Field, Long Island, Nichols is combining a furlough and honeymoon. He was married last Saturday to his collegeI sweetheart, Ruth McCain of Clark- dale, Miss. where the ceremony tookj place. 1JAROLD hasn't slowed up much in four years. He wrestled with Warren DeLand, Bob Allen (Var- sity 165-pounder) and George Cur- tis (Frosh 155-pounder), and went through his unlimited bag of tricks. His younger brother, Don, wore the' Maize and Blue for Michigan wrestl- ing teams also, and annexed the Na- tional Collegiate crown at 175 pounds in 1940. Don is now piloting a pas- senger airliner. Harold is particularly remember- ed for his unique system of paring pounds before a match. He would weigh 154 pounds 24 hours before weighing-in time. The day before would include a stiff workout that would sweat off six pounds. In the evening he would dring a bottle of citrate of magnesia and a glass of fruit juice. Next day he would weigh in at 145 pounds. In between the weighing-in and the match, Nichols would eat and drink bring- ifig his weight up to about 151 pounds by wrestling time. IT GETS IN THE BLOOD: Do you remember Michigan's third-string halfback, Warren Yaap? He had the misfortune to play in the Wolverine backfield with, Tom Kuzma, Paul White, Don Robinson, Bob Chappuis, Cliff Wise, Frank Wardley, Bob Wiese, Don Lund, etc. Well, Yaap is back on Campus. However, he is now a student in the Meteorology Train- ing School at East Quadrangle . . . . IT'S A SMALL WORLD: Who would ever think that two former Michigan men would bump into each other in Wisconsin. The draft took both Frank Wardley, a reserve halfback last fall, and Johnny Mc- Carty, a trackman who showed great promise as a freshman. Both had weak eyesight and were shipped to Camp McCoy's Limited Service School. Recently they ran into each other at Camp.... DOWN FLORIDA WAY: Uncle Sam has scattered Michigan men in every direction. At Miama Beach are Don Robinson, captain of Michigan's 1943 baseball team; Chuck Kennedy, second-string end last fall; and Dutch Heid. All are, in the Army Air Corps. The other night Kennedy and Heid had the evening off and went on an ice cream and milk binge. MISCELLANEOUS MAKE MONEY-on your used cloth- ing by phoning Claude H. Brown, 2-2736, 512 S. Main.
