T1H 1iii iA 1 j3____XSN7i A AA 1100 94 Dry Sundays' Would Increase Absenteeism, Says CIO Official College of Literature, Science, and the Arts CHANGES IN ROOM SCHEDULES In order to free necessary classrooms for government war training programs, the following changes in room schedules are being made, effective Monday, March 15, 1943. ENGLISH _., DETROIT, March 14.-(/P)-Pre- dieting that "dry Sundays" would increase absenteeism of night shift workers in Detroit war plants, the head of a CIO local union today pro- tested a pending legislative bill which would ban Sunday sale of beer and wine. In telegrams to Governor Kelly and members of the Legislature, Samuel Sage, President of the United Automobile Workers Briggs Aircraft Local 742, said: "Assinine legislation will affect the war effort as badly as fifth column propaganda." ,Warning that the bill would "hurt immeasurably any attempt to cor- rect absenteeism" and would also drive workers to seek recreation in blind pigs, Sage explained that his union has been attempting to induce night shift workers to confine drink-j ing to Sunday. Men working six nights a week do not have to go to work until Mondayafternoon. If they confine their recreation to Sundays, their heads are clear and they're able to report for work _promptly on Mon- day, he said. "Blind pig drinking is unsafe and may sabotage the war production program," Sage declared. He added that workers drinking in blind pigs would become the prey of persons seeking information useful to the enemy. I, No. 22 ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN MARCH 14, 1943I preliminary selection of men to begin training on July 1 under the Navy V-12 program which is being inaugurated on campus following confirmation . The V-12 program is designed to produce offi- cers for the Navy, Ma- rine Corps, and the Coast Guard, and selection of candidates for this train- ipg will be made on the basis of scholastic stand- ing, probable aptitude, and recommendation by the University authorities . . . All men accepted for train- ing will go on active duty in uniform under military discipline. * * * THE UNION seems to be ,in a mood for tradition breaking ... It is said that the. "splinters are flying fast and thick this week in the Taproom" with, many seniors doing neat jobs of carving their ini- tials on the tops of the ta- bles ... This year for the farst time seniors are being allowed to put their John. Henrys on the tables dur- ing the beginning of the semester... This conveni- ence is meant only for 10,000 University stu- dents and 161 faculty men have "gone to war", the files show . . . Adventures and heroism mark the paths of these Michigan 'Men of War ... Even more can be added to that num- ber when the ERC men are counted . . . It is begin- ning to look like a girls' school-but not for long- with contingents of mete- orology students coming here for training and oth- er programs bringing men in uniform. * * * THE BIGGEST drive on campus this week is the Red Cross campaign . . . It's up to the campus to raise $1,000 in the county quota of $53,000 . . . The campaign is being directed from the Michigan Union under the direction of a committee headed by Bun- ny Crawford, '44 .. . Ev- ery dormitory, fraternity and cooperative will be covered during the drive and all men were asked to buy a dollar membership ... The little tag with the Red Cross on it is seen floating from most lapels these days. women . . A greatly ex- panded war program based on a series of aptitude tests and student question- naires . . . Every coed will receive a War Board ques- tionnaire to determine the number of women who will attend the summer term and to find out other plans that they may have . . . Results of the tests and counseling are expect- ed to help the University to iiap out a comprehensive women's war program, to be composed of courses for which there will be a de- mand and a need. MANPOWER Corps and "Boss" Mary Borman have launched another appeal . . . . This time the call is issued for volunteers to work at the University Hospital and the Health Service ...At the Hospital there is a great need for orderlies, with only three regulars on the job during the day . . . Bill Buckley, '45, head of the Manpower hospital volunteer division, said that 35 male volun- teers would meet the de- mands for help in that quarter. University to live in mili- tary barracks. ALL the engineers and all those who engineered tickets for the affair made merry at the traditional Slide Rule Ball . . . The affair lacked the usual flavor with most of the -lawyers long since depart- ed to do service with Uncle Sam, and the giant slide rule was little molested .-. Jan Savitt and his Top- hatters provided the mu- sic for the merry-makers . . . Tickets to the dance were as scarce as hen's teeth with flush lit stu- dents, those who are still around, slyly wrangling tickets out of dark corners from eccentric engineers. * .*, MORE Michigan Men of Sports become Michigan Men of War-the recent orders calling up the ERC will take 11 Michigan ath- letes . . . Men in uniform who wish to par- ticipate in the debate will be excused from their campus posts. Edward W. Mill, teaching fellow in the political science department, and Joseph K. Yamagiwa, instructor in Japanese, will lead the discussion. Harold C. Sowitne will be student chairman. To focus greater campus attention on the impending problem of the United States' post-war relations with Japan is the purpose of the panel, which is the second in the current series sponsored by the Post War Council. The meetings of the Post War Council are open to anyone who is in- terested in discussing plans for the future and after the, short speeches are presented, there will be a period of questions from the floor.
