"Your presence here is evidence that the great majority of your num- bers have participated in the .Uni- versity's accelerated program, and that your purpose has been the patriotic one of fitting yourselves, through education, to give promptly the greatest possible service to our nation at war. We are well aware that this has meant real sacrifice and much voluntarily added labor, and today's exercises are intended to give public expression to these views. "Most of you are leaving the Uni- versity to take your places in govern- ment service or war industry. We think it appropriate to remind you America is fighting-individual lib- erty, the right of self-government, the right of free speech, and free- dom of worship, the security of home- life, and a world-spirit unsullied by barbarism-are far from being ma- terial, but are precisely the ideals+ for which this University stands and toward which its instruction is now and always will be directed. As you pass into the ranks of Michigan alumni you still remain members of the University family; and we urge you not, to let these ideals, nor your faith in the things of the spirit, be- come dimmed or lost.
