LEROY WEIR
Marty was a hero with the Marines in
the first World War before entering
school. He too was an All-Americanl
in fcotball. Terms at Western Michi-1
gan, Purdue and Princeton preceded
his coaching job at Michigan.
Bennie Oosterbaan, head basket-
ball and football end coach has thet
outstanding recrd of all Michigan
athletes. Three times Oosterbaan
made the All-American squad as an
end, and he was one of Michigan's
rare nine lettermen. He also was a
star performer on the court and the
diamond.
Wallie Weber coaches the frosh
football teams. A graduate of Michi-
gan, Weber put in three years as foot-
ball coach at Benton Harbor before
returning to his alma mater.
Golf coach Ray Courtright is a pro-
duct of Oklahoma where he made
quite a reputation for himself, win-
ning 12 letters and being a Phi Beta
Kappa. He consistently produces out-
standing golf squads, having won sev-
eral Big Ten titles. In the fall he
serves as assistant frosh football
coach.
A former big league ball player,
baseball mentor Ray Fisher has been
demonstrating his ability to build
championship baseball teams. Since
he accepted the reins in 1921, Fish-
er's lads have won the Conference
crown six times and have yet to finish
a season under the .500 mark.
Two newcomers to the grid staff
are Art Valpey and Bill Barclay. Al-
though Barclay is better known for
his golfing abilities, both he and Val-
pey won three letters in football at
M.ichigan. Barclay also played two
yeas nf varsity basketball. Valpey
now assists with the coaching of ends
while Barclay helps with the backs.
Winning one conference title and
having his team runner-up twice in
four years of coaching is the record
of tennis coach Leroy Weir. Weir for-
merly was a star racquet man in
Qio and also coached in Cleveland
for seven years before coming to Ann
Arbor.
N att lann's record as swimming
coah is unsurpassed by anyone in
the country. Since coming here in
1925 Mann has made it a habit of
developing world - beating teams.
Among the honors his natators have
hung up are 13 conference and 12 in-
tercollegiate championships. In 1940
his squad won the National A. A. U.
crown in addition to the other two,
being the first team to ever turn the
trick.
Ken Doherty, track coach, had a
real job to perform in maintaining
Michigan's track record, and in his
three years he h s turned in a very
favorable perfornnce. In his first
year Ken coached the thinclads to
both the indoor and outdoor Confer-
ence championships. Previously he
was an American decathlon chain-
pion and represented the United
States in the Olympics. Later he
served as Wolverine freshman track
coach.
From Saginaw comes frsh track
headChester Stacklouse. Whie there
"Stack" turned out several top-notch
high school cinder squads.

go the credit for Michigan's repeated
success on the athletic fields of bat-
tie. They are responsible for th
teaching of the boys and the coudi-
toning of them. Without them, Mich-
igan would not hold the high place
it does among the nation's great col-
legiate powers.
