Maxwell Frst Spots 'Nova Puppis' A new star has been discovered. No,! Sam Goldwyn didn't do it this time. This star is the real thing and the honors of. discovery go . to Michigan men.1 So far as present reports are con- cerned, the new star, "Nova Puppis," is a Michigan nova. It was first re- ported by Bernhard H. Dawson, at the La Plata Observatory, Argentina. Dasntook his PhD in .astronomy at Michigan several years ago. Just to keep the honors secure,.it was found independently by Dr. A. D. Maxwell of the University Observa- tory, on the morning of Nov. 11, a few hours before the arrival of a telegram announcing Dawson's discovery. Yesterday four photographs of the' spectrum. of Nova puppis were ob- tained by Dr. Maxwell and Dr. D. B. M4cLaughlin with the 37-inch tele- scope and spectrograph at the Ulni- versity Observatory. According to Dr. McLaughlin, "No- va are not actually new, but just rep- resent a violent explosion of gas from the surface of a star that was pre- viously quite.faint. A.Nova arises from its normal faintness to intense bright- ness in only a few 'days, but usually takes several years to decline to its original faint condition." "Although novae are rather numer- ous," Dr. McLaughlin said, "this is one of the brightest in the twentieth century, and the brightest since Nova Aquilae which appeared in 1918."
