Mother's Day is on the tenth of
May this year and now you can't say
you weren't warned; from the bulk
of the advertising which has lately
been dropping you unsubtle hints as
to how you can fittingly pay your re-
spects to Maw you must have gath-
ered at least a hazy idea that some-
thing by way of token is expected of
you unless you are a no-good bounder
and downright un-American to boot.
Research informs us that the whole
thing began back in old England with
an institution called Mothering Sun-
day. On a Sunday in spring it was
the custom for children who lived
away from home to visit the family
Ihomestead, bearing gifts of sugared
cakes. If, today, you want to stick
to the traditional idea, a box of candy
or cookies would be a suitable gift for
your mother.
For A 'Young' Mother
But perhaps you have a "modern
mother" who counts calories as rig-
orously as any of her daughters. In
this case you could compliment her
femininity with a prettily-packaged
set of beauty aids.
Perfume too would delight her and
a generous flacon of cologne would
be appreciated throughout the warm
weeks ahead. And even a most con-
servative mother would approve the
delicate scent of sachets for her
drawers and closets.

most mothers might feel a little fool-
