PAGE r, s THE MICHIGAN DAILY - Advertisement - Constitution of The University of Michigan Union SPECIAL MEETING OF UNION MEMBERS ' All members of the University of Michigan Union are hereby notified of ra special meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 1942, for the purpose of acting on the following suggested revis- ion of the Michigan Union Con- stitution: CONSTITUTION OF THE UNI- VERSITY OF MICHIGAN UNION I. NAME This association shall be known as the "University of Michigan Union." II. PURPOSES AND EMBLEM The purposes of the Union are to furnish a University social and recreational center; to provide a meeting place for faculty, alumni, former students and residence students of the University; and to help in fitting University of Michigan men for the perform- ance of their duties as good cit- izens. The emblem of the Union shall be a circular gold button or pin, three-eights of an inch in diam- eter, having upon its face an enamelled blue block M and the letters U-N-I-O-N raised in gold and placed vertically. III MEMBERSHIP Section I The membership shall be con- fined to men, and this provision shall limit all other provisions hereof. There shall be seven class- es of memberships, viz.: StudentI Members; Annual Members; Life Members; Honorary Members; Di- rectors' Members; Summer School Members; and Special Course Members, as hereinafter described. All such members have equal rights and privileges except as herein otherwise provided. Only Life Members and persons who have made a payment or payments on applications for Life membership and who are not in default in respect to such pay- ments, shall be entitled to wear the Union emblem. Section II. Student Members Every student of the regular session of the University shall be- come a Student Member upon paying such tuition fees as may be prescribed by the Board of Regents, including the portion of such fees designated as the "Un- ion Fee," such membership to continue during the period for which he has paid tuition, ex- cept that it shall immediately ex- pire if he withdraws from the 'University before the end of the college year. Section III. Annual Members Alumni of the University, form- er residents who were actually in attendance therein for a period of at least six weeks, members of the several faculties, former mem- bers of the faculty in actual resi- dence for at least six weeks, form- er regents, officers and former officers of the University, and no others may become Annual Mem- bers upon application and upon payment of the annual dues. The annual dues for members of the faculty shall be seven dol- lars and fifty cents. The annual dues for members, other than stu- dents and members of the faculty, who reside in Ann Arbor or with - in sixty miles thereof (to be class- ed as resident members), shall be ten dollars, and for other per- sons (to be classed as non-resi- dent members, five dollars, in each case payable in advance. The membership year shall end August 31, except in case of stu- dents who are student members under Paragraph 1 of Section II of Article III If any eligible person shall ap- ply for annual membership at any time after April 1, his annual dues for the remainder of the same fiscal year shall be one-half the annual dues applicable to him, The Board of Directors, in its discretion, may change the amount of the annual dues. Any person who shall once be- come a Student or an Annual Member shall, unless expelled for cause, be liable for the payment of the annual dues to the close of the fiscal year during which he ;hall have filed li; written resig- nation. Default for thirty clays after written request, in the payment of dues, will .justify expulsion by the Board of Directors, in its dis- cretion. Section IV. Life Members All students becoming Student members after September 1, 192G, :;hall become Life Members after paying the prescribed tuilion lees. including the "Union ' 'ee for four years. Any student, who shall be in rsice in the Univrsity as a Student( Member after Sep- tember 1, 1926, for less than four years, may become a Life Member upon the payment of the differ- ence between fifty dollars and the total amount of Union fees paid by him after September 1, 1926. Any tudent who shall be in residence in the University as a Student Member after September 1, 1926, and who has before that date made partial payments on a Life Membership subscription, shall receive further credit to- wards the payment of such sub- scription for the full amount of the Union fees thereafter paid by him. Upon his completion of the payment of the amounts required to become a Life Member, every student shall be exempt from further fees for membership. All other obligations for Life Membership subscriptions incur- red before September, 1926, shall remain in full force and be gov- erned by this Article as it read before this amendment, except that any person who has made DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN vote of the members present, elect to honorary membership any per- son who shall be voted to have rendered distinguished service to the University. c) Honorary Members, without payment of dues, shall be en- titled to all the privileges of Life Members, except that they shall not, as such, be permitted to vote or hold office in the Union. Section VI. Directors' Members Persons not otherwise eligible for membership in the Union, may become Directors' Members by vote of the Board of Directors, but only under the following cir - cumstances. Any persons desiring such membership shall present to the Board of Directors his written application therefor, in prescrib- ed form. As soon as such appli- cation shall be filed, the Record- ing Secretary shall give' notice therof by mail to each member of the Board of Directors, stating the name and residence of the appli- cant and the names of his en- dorsers. At least ten days shall elapse after the presentation of any such application to the Board of Directors, before the Board shall vote thereon. By affirma- tive vote of not less than a major- ity of the entire Board of Direc- tors, any such applicant may be admitted as follows: 1) Directors' Annual Members Upon payment to the Union within thirty days after such vote, of an application fee of at least one hundred dollars. and agreement to be under ob- ligation to pay also annual dues of twenty-five dollars in equal semi-annual installments, pay- able in advance or or as of Sep- tember .1 and March 1, respec- tively, until he shall have tend- ered his written resignation. In case of default in respect of any such installments, he shall for- feit such membership, at the option of the Board of Direc- ters. Such membership shall be subject to termination at any time if and when the Board of Directors, for any reason, ex- pressed or unexpressed, shall vote to terminate such mem- bership and shall cause to be tendered to the person concern- ed an amount equal to the said application fee, with notice of such vote. 2) Directors' Life Members Under payment to the Union, within thirty days after such vote, of at least five hundred dollars. Directors' Members shall be en- titled to all the privileges of An- nual Members, except that they shall not. be permitted to vote or hold office in the Union. The number of Directors' Mem- bers shall at no time exceed five hundred non-resident nor two hundred resident members, as hereinbefore classified, except by written affirmative vote of the entire membership of the Board of Directors and of the Finance Com- mittee. Section VII. Summer School Members Any student in actual attend- ance at a summer session of the University or any member of a summer session faculty may be- come a summer school member, entitled during the summer ses- sion only to all rights and priv- ileges of annual members (exeept the privilege of voting or holding office> upon paying such summer dues as the Board of Regents may provide. Section VIII. Special Course Members A student in actual attendance and regularly entered as such, in a special course from time to time established by authority of the Regents, requiring not exceeding a semester's attendance, may be- {'ome a Speciial Course Member, entitled, during the period of such coure only .to all [le rights of Summer School Members, upon making application in the pre- scribed form and paying special course dies of two dollars for each 5p (ial c'use period.
