MARCH 11, 1942 i MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FIJVE Prints,, Checks Lead Style Parade For Afternoon Dresses Straight Skirt <4 Spring Gloves To Display Great Variety InFabrics And Styles Bright Pumps. Will Set Off Gloves, a small but important part of. a. complete wardrobe, should be an item on the spring clothes budget. Appropriate gloves for every occa- sion are significant features of a well-dressed woman. White suede is considered the per- fect glove for the Easter Sunday Parade. These may be short and handsewn, but of conservative de- sign. A feminine and popular pull- on is made distinctive by- short lines of handstitching across the back. Eyelet Trimming Featured One dainty, handsewn shortie is extremely plain, with the exception of eyelet trimming along the edge. The new tapered wrist is a fashion note, and may be found in a con- servative pull-on. Returning to suede, this material is used in a smart, short glove with' brief fringe around your wrist. If one is seeking a good invest- ment, this may be found in a pair of deerskin gloves. Rugged, hand- some, and long-wearing, they will fit in with either sport tweeds or that new dressmaker, spring suit, behav- ing nicely with both. Cut longer' than the average glove, they will con- tribute an air of smartness to either outfit. Whipstitch Is New Double-woven cotton gloves have found their place in the fashion sun' when dressed up by the new whip- stitch. For more dressy occasions, shorties distinguished by a wrist bow would be the answer. Fashioned in suede or cotton these would be equal- ly effective. The king of glove fabrics, doeskin, still reigns supreme. For morning, noon, or night, designs may be found in this material. For morning, the short. handsewn slipon is perfect. For daytime, the smart four-button length is the answer. And for dress- up elegance in the evening, the eight- button length is worn by well-dressed women everywhere. This latter style may be found in every conceivable shade to exactly match, or perfectly contrast with that new spring formal. These are often worn with dancing dresses to give that covered-up look. Completing the glove wardrobe, a well-fashioned, serviceable pair of pigskins are necessary. For riding, golfing, or hiking these will answer your' problem. Spring Is Reflected In Floral Perfumes Spring, soft breezes, light floral perfumes-that's what the weather- man has ordered for the next few months. This spring you can match your favorite scent in perfume, cologne, bath powder, sachets, lipsticks, and even soap! And these scents are more true-to-the-flowers than ever before. / We have it straight from the Easter Bunny that some of his pastel eggs are going to contain saucy scented perfumes, for more and more toiletry manufacturers are putting up their products in packages shaped to sug- gest the season or holiday or name of the scent. Sring Prints Red alligator calf pumps for your suits, red suede pumps for your bright prints, and red ballet slippers just for fun are appearing on many dressed-up feet this spring. How- ever they require pretty ankles and legs, so if your face is your fortune, better steer clear. Navy blue alligator pumps with little flat bows and square low heels are perfect for suits and dresses. The low heels are a blessing for all tall women. This is the kind of shoe that can be worn with everything, so is practical as well as charm- ing. Spectators are still favorites among college women everywhere. Several new versions include a natural linen with brown heel and toe, and an all navy pair of gabardine and kid. The white ones withbrown, bnavy, or black heels and toes can be worn all summer long as well as through spring. The new shoes with the elevated soles and wide, high heels are fine for those 5 foot 3 incheseandrunder, but not for anyone taller unless she has been lucky enough to capture a young giant. They add a full inch and a half to one's height so unless you're wee, better resist them. Spring is here tra-la, but the bright sun certainly makes those clothes you've worn all winter look wrinkled and dingy. For that tired reefer you can go buy yourself a remnant of dizzy plaid, make a new collar and have the buttons covered to match. Pastel WooIs, Large Flowers Are Featured By PHYLLIS PRESENT Classic navy blues, prints, and tiny black and white checks are three im- portant highlights in afternoon dress- es this season. The peasant influence is definite- ly most popular in the printed styles. Huge flower block prints or em- broidered ones set sparingly on plain backgrounds are the newest addition to dressy styles. Besides these there are loads of tiny flowered prints in the spring fashion parade. Have Long Look Most of the prints have that long look which seems destined to stay, and tiny waist-lines which do won- ders for the figure. Elbow-length{ sleeves seem to be a characteristic of all the prints, and many have bloused tops. The printed silk with long wool or flannel jacket to match is in again this season, and makes a smart out-' fit for any occasion, as it can be worn with or without the jacket. Something new is the one color large print on a white background which has a turban and pouch bag with a wooden handle to match. Per- haps, the most stunning thing this season is the combination of print top and plain skirt or vice-versa. Many of these are styled with the new bell-shaped skirt. Lace Decorates Touches of red, and white starched1 and lingerie lace decorate the classic navy blue silks this spring. Military touches on navy blues are more subtle this year, as they're evident in the cut of the outfit or combination of' colors rather than in navy or army insignia. Plain tailored and pastel things are . still on the racks this season, and warm any college woman's heart. Some styled in silk have shirtwaist tops with long hip lines ending in accordion pleats. The light pastel wools come in beautiful shades of aqua, beige, chocolate, yellow, and dusty rose. These are styled with buttons all the way down the front, and several unpressed pleats. Plaids and stripes are seen in these pastels many of which have long full-length sleeves, and natural colored leather belts. Gabardine Featured One beautiful dress which was for- merly made by an English company, is now put out by an American con- cern. It's fashioned of gabardine in lovely pastels, and the lines of the dress are smoothly tailored. It has a fly front, narrow skirt, casual open neckline and one top pocket. Tiy fine saddle stitching can be detected as a bit of decoratiot, and the dress is completed with a reptile saddle' leather belt.' Black and white checks are im- Perfume is Found In Powder Forma If you have tired of perfumes and colognes in the usual form, you can buy them as solids or powders. Solids come in stick form and powder sa- chets are pretty and handy. Inci- dentally, the stores are selling lots of sachets for lingerie, too. Hand lotion and perfumes are be- ing combined in popular floral scents and even foundation oils carry out the scent theme, but if you want to add spring atmosphere to you and your belongings on a large scale, youi can burn a perfumed candle lamp which gently perfumes your room. Look Fetching Gals .1 I By JANET VEENBOER With spring in the air and with young men's fancies rapidly turningi to other channels it's time for Michi- gan women to inject a bit of life into their well-worn winfer ward- robes. It's going to take more than sun- shine to brighten the aver:e class- room, and the gay pastels of the new spring wools will go far towards attaining that end. No girl needs to ce told to do spring shopping, but everyone can use a few suggestions as to what to look for. Dolman Sleeves Are In Each season sweaters seem to be- come more and more desirable, so that whether a girl has five or fif- teen she can always find room for more. This spring will be marked as history-making, for the classic cardigan has been combined with cVulman sleeves to make a sweater that will be a MUST in every ward- robe. This carefully tailored cardi- fan made of wool jersey has the full effect that every college girl loves: Nubby knits are still in the spot- light, lucious enough in the new col- ors to make your mouth water. Gold, icc -blue, turquoise and sand are a few of the shades which will be popu- lar this spring. Another novelty wool is featured \n the "oatmeal sweat- Lines Are Innovations In Classics i er,' a pure wool pull-over that comes well down over the hips, Color Emphasized Skirts are again made to mix or match. or to contrast completely with a plaid. Fashion emphasizes color this year, and that's what you'll find in the new light weight skirts so perfect for the forthcoming warm GCather. Finch aqua, parakeet green, canary yellow. pelican pink, and plum are terms which very aptly describe the briglit new shades. Classic grey menswear flannels- slacks, skirts and jackets-perennial favorites of the college woman, again come to the front this year. These hardy, casual suits are able to stand the wear due to them and still re- tain their lasting smartness. News of the straighter, peg-top skirts may not be too welcome to the conservative Josephine College. Wrap- arounds are reported as coming in with side-saddle suit-skirts - un- doubtedly to save wool for defense. Sixty paltry pennies will buy you real protection from Ann Arbor wea- ther and it's postpaid too. Just look for a place to buy or send for the new synthetic rubbers. They come in cheery little polka-dot oiled silk envelopes and can be carried in your purse. r , < >t.- ,t * Sring Sarlie! in our gay, youthful creations the last word in the bright- Sess and freshness that goes withthe season. $500 , j r ..L";+ Others $2.00 to $15.00 TheROERTS HATSHOP 407 ,East Libertyc -c >rcz > 0<;= _> < c; < rc ;>a ;;o<; : ac c c- o 4;;;>c. ;;;;> o portant this season, and are seen in complete dresses or skirts with plain jackets. Checked gloves and hats are very smart with these dresses. One of the smartest dresses in this line is a two-piece outfit. The top is a red wool jersey jacket with big white pearl buttons and a white dicky. The skirt is a black and white tiny check of heavy rayon. In general peplums, redingotes and draped effects run through all the spring styles. One smart ensemble is the navy blue crepe dress with long princess style redingote in red. Both the coat and dress may be worn separately, and the coat can easily be used with other dresses. Bring Out Stuffed Animpals And Dolls For College Room Gone are the days when college women flaunted an all-American se- ries of college pennants, donated by far-flung collegiate beaux, to dazzle her sorority sisters or dormitory neighbors. Into the ash can with pennants go beer mugs as an aid to room decorations. But dust off your stuffed animals and dolls of your younger days and adorntyour book shelves and beds with these new additions. Maybe a gentle hint to the boy friend will afford you one of those brand new surrealistic ones. Bedspreads with matching drapes are practically a campus "must." Col- lege men, too, buy these matching outfits for their rooms, and interest-" ingly enough a survey proved that men showed practical streaks through their choice of the darker shades, while the girls usually choose the lighter, gayer and more easily soiled ones. For that extra pin to dress up a suit or accent a dress a sterling-sil- ver orchid would be equally at home on either outfit.
