In NewSpring Styles
Tans Predominate
In contrast to the olive drab and
navy blue which distinguish our
armed forces from the populace, civ-
ilian defense workers on "holiday"
(if any) this spring will wear bold
plaid, checked and striped sport coats
to counter-balance the demoralizing
uniformity of overalls and dark busi-
ness suits.
Light weight wools will suffice
purely for spring wear with tan and
soft gray the predominating colors.
The grays come in the usual herring-
bones and, stripeswith a new note
in the pale blue or gold lines through
them.
Camel's Hair-Still Good
Camel's hair jackets are still popu-
lar and apparently there will be no
difficulty in filling the demand for
them. Twills, too, remain campus
favorites.-
A different angle on spring 'sport
coats will be" shown in the diamond
pattern used in the tans and light
browns.
With economical patriotism in
mind, college men will be glad to
know that the coats can be worn
with practically every new spring
trousers, be they brown, tan, gray or
blue.
Gabardine Demand High
Although there is still a demand
for gabardine, the supply will be more
limnited since a variety of styles and
colors will not be forthcoming.
For spring and summer wear to-
gether, the cashmeres and shetlands
fill the bill to a "V." They are flat,
well-tailored and above all light
weight, warm enough for spring and
not too warm for summer wear-
Casualness and ease will again be
the keynote-this year to promote re-
laxation for the hard-Wborking civil-
ian. Hand-needled coat edges and
pockets are very good-lobking on
camel's hair coats particularly. Patch
ticket pockets with flaps are also
new and convenient for small charige,
and memos.
Clever clothing manufacturers are
now so ingenious that they've been
sewing little pockets into your sport
coats where you would least expect
them. Patterned after the Davey
Jones style of the famous Australian
clothier, some coat designers have in-
o-uded a match pocket in the inside'
lining of the coat, thus protecting
matches from rain and leaving the
former match pocket free for change,
or vice-versa.
Of War Attire

FashionExperts Predict
Since the war has caused abbreviat-
ed wardrobes due to the lack of ma-
terials -for the manufacture of the
excess baggage in apparel such as
cuffs, collars and broomstick pleats,
one must follow a new trend in order
to remain in social favor.
According to leading experts in
the ficd of men's h berdashery-
now following the traditional example
of women throughout history-the
renovation of old clothes will become
one of the more important duties of
the housewife and tailor. The diffi-
culty to secure materials for the
manufacture of men's clothing and
silk for milady has proved the value
of old clothes.
For Reknit That Yarn!
For years in nearly every American
home, mother has foundt ways to re-
knit the, yarn from old sweaters into
new and fashionable styles. Hand-
me-downs from big brother and big
sister are being worn in the best of
families and now that the war has
caused la serious situation in the
clothes market, hand-me-downs will
once more become the mode of the
day. ,
With a little imagination and in-
genuity, the average person who is
handy with needle and thread can
make new creations by the mere ad-
dition of a collar, cuff, or zipper now
being eliminated in "store clothes."
The war, in making style much
simpler has also made it easier for
the domestic "Elizabeth Haweses" to
keep up with the spinach of fashion.
Since home manufacturing con-
trasted with factory products can
gain a flavor of its own American
seamsters and seamstresses can ob-
tain a position in the governing of
universal fashion creations.
No Limits On Design
The possibilities of varied sytles are
innumerable. Although profession-
al designers must emphasize on sim-
plicity, there is no indication that
this decision forecasts drabness or
colorlessness in clothes. On the con-
trary, the limitations of the war
emergency cannot interfere with the
desire of the average man to main-
tain himself in the manner to which
he has become accustomed in the
past.
The person who has maintained
himself in up-to-date fashions as a
matter of habit will not overnight
change his appearance because of
outside impressed forces. The de-
sire for the old customary will drive
him to create for himself substitutes
for this eiergency.
By its color you shall know whe-
ther it belongs to the 1942 Spring
style set . . . hats this year are
mist blue, sand,, pearl grey and
olive drab.
What with Old Man Winter begin-
ning. to let up enough to give the
snow a chance to melt and signs of
spring slowly appearing on the scene,
it doesn't seem too early to lend a
thought to what's new in men's head-
gear.
On looking over the newest in
men's toggery, the most significant
note consists in the fact that with
hats, at least, ashion has done
nothing drastic. As a matter of fact,
both the colors and styles of last
season remain little changed, and in
a pinch last season's hat will do

Wider Brims
Perhaps the most radical change
in men's headgear is the trend to-
ward wider brims and more colorful
bands. The material this year par-
ticularly features lightweight felts
\Vith low pinch crowns and springy
brims. VXarietv can be lound in a
cheviot-finished model with a suede
band.
The two most popular hues of the
coming season are mist blue and
camel, but olive drab, pearl grey and
sand will continue to be standbys for
the well-d;essed man who wants to
get ahead. Teal, cactus tan and co-
coa brown are other headline colors
suitable for spring, but the general
color scheme is for neutral shades.
The most outstanding of the newf
hat models is a brown felt with a
blue band which we are assured
blends well with either blue, brown,
or tan suit. Another of the season's
favorite toppers along the same line,
and good with any suit, features a
grey lightweight felt with a wine
band.
Casuals For Campus
Campus wear is, as ever, casual
and with a jaunty air. The Univer-
sity style will be much the same as
for dress wear, and khaki will con-
tinue to be a campus favorite. New
colors and combinations are the

Style Notes .' . .
The men of the shoe stores say that
next year's overshoes -. and rubbers
will be heavy, ugly and durable.
When Mr. Henderson decided that
men didn't need two-pants suits he
didn't take in account some of the
unplaned benches in Haven Hall.
Shoe repair shops are asking their
customers to re-heel their shoes with
leather instead of rubber, which is
harder to get now , . . even for a
heel.-.
