Crisler Makes Four Suggestions College football coaches can pre- vent the new unlimited substitutions rule from dragging out the game, H. 0. (Fritz) Crisler, president of! the American Football Coaches as- sociation, announced last week. Tlie rule allows coaches to sendf players into the game as often as they wish. In a letter addressed to 400 coaches, Crisler, athletic director and football coach at the University' of Michigan, suggested four means by which his fellow tutors of theI game could make the rule work. - He urged application of the rule permitting only 25 seconds for the offensive'team to get its play under way even, when substitutions were being made. With application of the 25-second rule, Crisler said the coaches could prevent substitutions from slowing __..._ . Sthe game if they follow these propus- als: "1. Have players who are likely to he substituted seated in front rows near the coach, "2. Players should be ready with headgear. "3. Players should be sent in at the instant the ball is declared dead and time stopped, as on out of bounds, incomplete pass, etc., un- less you desire to be charged with a time out. "4. Talk over substitutions with your captain before the game and have the latter inform the officials he will accept all substitutions, if that agreement has been reached." Crisler said the substitutions rule was a "good one" and that: "It will enable us to protect the tired player. It is true it will help the stronger teams as well as the weak. It can be shamefully abused by mak- ing games drag." The game, players, coaches, and spectators will profit, he added, if "the spirit of the new rule is respec- ted by not prolonging contests." Bucks Are Grid Sheiks COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 29.--None of the experts have as yet seen fit to name the 1941 Ohio State Univer- sity football squad as the best in the country but there seems to be little doubt that the squad will be among the country's best-dressed gridders. Tire manufacturers are simplify- ing lines to conserve crude rubber, according to the Department of Commerce. I --- ------- 0 II TOE S of USED TEXT BOOKS (Our Specialty) For Every Course on the Campus U JIM YOUEL Iowa roster, but he is no Nile Kinnick. He can punt better than anybody in the conference and his passing will stand tip under careful scrutiny, but his running game is woefully 'weak. No Triple Threats Tom Farmer and Bob Bender will be .on the sidelines to supplement Youel, but both leave just a little to be desired if they are to fill the im- portant left half post in the Hawks' lineup. Farmer can pass and run, but can't kick. Bender is in the same boat, but his flinging surpasses Far- mer's while his running is a shade lower. Youel will get the call because of his superior booting and defensive ability. The best Iowa halfback with the ball nestled in the crook of .his arm is Buster Mertes, the flashy riglat half. A bruising blocker, Mertes, however, needs more confidence be- fore he can supply the Hawkeyes with another running threat besides Green.I Once more directing the Iowans from the quarterback position will be Al Coupee. One of the best in the Big Ten, Couppee has added 15 pounds to his frame which will be of considerable aid to his blocking. Two Sophomores Of the sophomore backs only two, Jack Kennedy and Ben Trickey, look like Western ,'Conference material. Green and Mertes will be pass-re- ceiving threats, with Youel doing the tossing. The two ends, Parker and Burkett, have yet to show any dan- ge'ous ability in hauling down sail- ing pigskin, but Anderson has been drilling them and they may surprise Saturday. If Anderson goes by his past meth- ods, the spectators will be treated to an aerial attack supplementing Green's line bucking. The men to watch in the Iowa backfield will be Green and Youel, the one handling the running burden while the other wiil take care of aerial lanes. Few Substitutions And if Dr. 'Eddie lives up to his past reputation, few Iowa substitu- tidns will be seen. During his tenure at the Hawkeye school, Anderson, of necessity, has averaged only 23 men per contest, which is mighty low for a 60 minute game of Big Ten football. With weak reserve material and a veteran first team full of vast poten- tialities, it looks like the Iowans are going to stick by their nickname, the "Ironmen."
