THE MICHIGAN DAILY Nimitz Wants Math 'Tougher' Here Rear Admiral Chester V. Nimitz, named Commander-in-Chief of the United States Fleet yesterday, is the naval official who recently corre- sponded with Prof. Louis Bredvold suggesting that American universities CLAS'SIFIE "toughen-up" their mathematical re- quirements. Laxness in the educational pro- gram in the nation's colleges is caus- ing the United States Navy to reject 40 per cent of the university grad- uates who apply for commissions in the Navy, Nimitz said. Then chief of the Bureau of Navi- gation in Washington, Nimitz claimed that 75 per cent of the failures in the study of navigation could be at- tributed to the lack of an adequate knowledge of mathematics. "The Navy depends for its effic- iency upon trained men," Nimitz wrote, "but at one training station it was found necessary to lower the standards in 50 per cent of the ad- missions." He asked that mathematics "so vi- tal in fire control and other branches of the naval officer's profession" be emphasized in the academic curricula of America's universities. Revelli, conductor of the University bands, opens the first annual meeting of the Univer- sity and College Band Conductors' Associationunder the auspices of the Music Educators National Conference. Serving as chairman of this initial conference through his appointment by Fowler Smith, national chairman of the MENC, Professor Revelli also originated the idea of a band con- ductors' conference, and expects that the meetings will prove, invaluable in advancing concert and marching band music. Main purpose of the conference is to study the relation of the band pro- gram to modern educational trends. Other results will be the coordination of the programs and educational ob- jectives of college bands and a closer understanding of the activities and purposes of concert and marching bands. Meetings To Be Held Meetings will be held on marching bands, the concert band's place on the curricula, band as a credited course in the University, the band activity calendar and the relation of the band program to modern edu- "ational trends. Serving as chairmen- of the com- mittees will be such men as Prof. Raymond Dvorak of the University of Wisconsin. Prof. Hrold Bachman of the University of Chicago, Prof. G. C. Bainum of Northwestern Uni- versity, Prof. Russell Wiley of the University of Kansas and Prof. A. A. Harding of the University of Illinois. More than 25 conductors from all over the country have said they will definitely attend, Professor Revelli reported, while 38 more have said that they would probably be there.
