THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAG University Offers Defense Courses' Cotton production in Mexico this A plan to encourage truck farming Year is expected to be appreciably is being studied by the Government above average. of Trinidad and Tobago. high school graduates, but engineers already in industry are also in need of the work offered. Most of the courses were instituted at the requestI of industry and the military services.- Engineering research activity has a more direct bearing on Michigan's contribution to the government pro- gram. Under the direction of Prof. e A. E. White, the Department of Engi- e neering Research takes on contracts from the Office of Scientific Re- search and, Development in Wash- ington, other government agencies, and private companies. With a total of $75,000 in grants this year, the department is doing work in the fields of chemistry, phy- sics and engineering. Professor White predicts work amounting to $100,000 in definite defense con- tracts this year and an increase in research for private firms. Much of' the latter activity will also have a bearing on the present emergency. This research work has also given training to graduate students in the field outside the University. Last year 175 students took part in this division of the department. Even outside of Ann Arbor, the University is playing a vital role in the government's effort. The rosters of nearly every department show men on duration leaves. Botanists, psychologists and many engineering professors acting as consultants for industry are among those in this classification representing the Uni- versity in actual service. Prof. El-I more S. Pettyjohn of the chemical engineering department is now at sea as a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve while Lt. Com- mander Jesse Ormondroyd is on spe- ' cial duty in Washington. SAVE at ...
