New Housecoat

Turns Studying
To FasinPcte

Printed Robes, Quilted Cottons
And Luxurious Slipper Satin
P°t Blue Flannel In Background
By HELEN ROCKOFF
The era of the blue flannel bath-
robe has passed into oblivion and i
its place has appeared the housecoat
the "after-hour" backbone of the wo-
man's wardrobe. Displayed in a vari-
ety of styles, colors, and materials
the housecoat has become one of
the most ideal gifts to suit the needs
of many occasions.
For those cold, long, winter eve-
nings when the coed is up until all
hours of the night studying, a quilted
robe is the most practical and surely
the most cozy type of a housecoat.
Designed in bright, gay colored prits
with a nipped waistline, wide skirt,
and generous pockets, this rayon satin
style has already become a favorite.
Reversibles Are New
For those who prefer variety there
is the reversible quilt housecoat. Tail-
ored in blue or red on one side, and
white on the other, and everywhere a
bright posy or apple print on warm
washable percale, this design is equal-
ly attractive on either side.
For a quiet, intimate evening at
home with friends or the family there
is the still popular chenille gown. De-
signed in beautiful pastel shades with
long full sleeves, large, roomy pockets,
and a wide sweeping skirt, it is as
warm as it is bewitching. On Christ-
mas Day it will be a favorite with
every leisure-loving lad's.
Rayon Fabric Gowns
There's glamour for you the mo-
ment you slip into a luxurious rayon
fabric liostess gown. Perhaps a little
impractical for the college girl, it is
nevertheless one that will be adored
by everyone. It has a full three-quar-
ter length sleeve, a V neck, buttons
down to the waist, a narrow belt, and
a whirling full skirt.
The easy-to-pack housecoat and
one that is delightfully fresh in ap-
pearance is the washable cotton style.
A favorite for the warmer days it
still has its advantages during the
winter months. For those weekends
when only a small overnight bag is
the luggage, this housecoat is a joy.
A pet design is the zippered front
with two pert pockets, a sash back
and floating full skirt. This is bound
to make anyone look sleek and crisp.
That Soft Wool Robe
If they (honorable parents) have
promised you something really super
r and of your own choice, here's a little
hint to drop them.
Tell them about that beautiful,
white, soft wool robe that your heart
Went out to when you saw it in a re-
cent issue of that exclusive fashion
magazine.
Yes, it's very expensive, but just the
luxurious robe that you've always
dreamed of. The kind of a house coat
that is built for comfort, but i,
marked smartness plus. Tell them
how it's expertly tailored with straight
ines, long lapels, and one huge square
pocket.
Maybe if you're successful, you can
take it right out of the tinsel wrap-
ping on Christmas morning and feel
like a real fashion model.

Novel Trinkets
Keynote Trend
For Jewelry
Fortune-Telling Pins, Perfume
N Necklaces, Turquoise Charm
Bracelets Are New Favorites
By MOLLY McGILL
Jewelry may not be. the most im-
portant article in a girl's wardrobe,
but it certainly adds to it. Costume
jewelry is more popular than ever
and many new trinkets are now on
the market.
A fortune-telling pin is one of the
latest wonders of the fashion world.
It is flower shaped and made .of sil-
ver. At first glance it seems to be
only A bit of jewelry, but further in-
spection brings about a startling dis-
covery. The center is engraved with
the words Yes and No. The petals
spin 'round to play does-he-love-me.
One petal is tipped with a sparkler,
and when that petal stops at Yes he
loves you!
Speaking Of Pins
Simple bowknot brooches are won-
derful for the adornment of anything
from sweaters to plain handbags. If
you prefer something a little more
dressy, you'd like a jewelled bow of
pink, white and gold mnetal dusted
over with pale-blue paste stones.
A turquoise charm bracelet would
be the favorite of any woman. The
armlet itself is silver with torquoise
while the dangles are alternately
chunks of turquoise and charms of
silver and turquoise. Charms include
a basket, an arrow-pierced heart and
a lucky horseshoe. For the California
minded a wide bracelet of handmade
sterlig-silver filigree work is more
popular.
With Bottles Dangliing
The practical gals will go for a
trick necklace with perfume bottles
dangling from it. They are filled with
your favorite fragrances and can be
used whenever you wish. Pretty clever
wearing your perfume around your
neck!
On the finer side, a fine bracelet of
sterling silver and imperial cultured
pearls, a brilliant necklace of "gold"
made of sawed-off links, or a lavish
shell-shaped clip, gold-plated, of
rhinestones and pearls are all glam-
orous additions to apy wardrobe.
The Ears Have It!
Ear-rings have been becoming more
and more popular until now they are
an essential piece of jewelry. One
pair, two-toned gilt flower-shaped
ones centered with stones are perfect
for afternoons or evening.
Matching two-strand necklace and
bracelets will set off many a cos-
tume. The necklace is made of gilt
plastic balls, and there are three
bracelets to match. Necklace and
bracelets are not the only things that
come in matching sets. A smooth ster-
ling silver bra6elet has a matching
pin to go with it. They are hand-
wrought in a design that looks as if
it were satin ribbon. The bracelet
is about three-quarters of an inch
thick.
Pin And Clip Sets
Pins are popular this year, but
matching clips are giving them much
stiff competition. Right and left clips,
Qne for right-sided wear and the
other a confirmed southpaw, in a
swirling scroll design of gilt metal
make a handsome pair. They can be
worn singly or together, but it's nice
to have them both!
Jewelry designers have borrowed
ideas even from the seashore and of-
fer a matching set of clips and ear-
rings of yellow and rose gilt metal.
A pearl is nestled within each shell
to give it a beautiful yet realistic
touch.'

Military Trend
Inspires New
Winter Purse
/A
I;
Mention a purse to a coed and she
shudders. Mention a purse to the
well dressed female and she glories
at the opportunity to expostulate for
hours on the purse as an essential ac-
cessory of the well-dres,sed woman.
In order to be considered well dressed,
a suitable purse is a necessity and it's
about time the coed woke up to that
fact.
Purses following the trend of the
fashion world have gone military.
The "army girl" bag is styled exactly
like an army service cap with brass
buttons and everything. Made with
a long shouder strap this purse can
be carried over one shoulder. U.S.O.
tan, camouflage green and battleship
grey are among the newest bag shades
to match other accessories of the
same colors.
With Matching Shoes
Shoe and bag combinations are
ideal for both campus and date wear.
Alligator shoes with matching en-
velope bags can be worn for any
occasion. The ostrich seems to be
throwing himself at the feet of the
well-dressed women of today. Os-
trich shoes are becoming more and
more popular and an ostrich bag is a
must.
A bag with its own warming sec-
tion, namely, a muff, is needed more
and more as the days grow colder.
A smocked broadcloth muff bag may
be carried under arm, you may shove
one wing in it up to the elbow or
wear it prim-like with both hands,
wrist deep. You can hardly avoid look-
ing very smart any way you wear it.
Black Calf Is Good
If you like long, slim money-car-
riers that hold everything without;
giving you that loaded down look, a
smart jet black calf bag will do the
trick. Smooth and soft, these bags go
with every outfit from the' sternly
tailored to the fussy.
Fashion dictates wearing bright
with black. Bright, purses make a
dull outfit more attractive. For in-
stance, with your new all black out-
fit try a kelly green pouch bag that
will hold everything imaginable, or ai
great squashy swede purse in the new-
est winter shade, high blue.

Novel Christmas Possibilities
If you are beginning to gather in
the extra pennies frantically and to
wonder where the next Christmas
present is coming from, it's high time
to put cn ye olde thinking cap, lay in
a stock of materials and make the
gifts to order yourself. The job isn't
nearly as tedious as it sounds, and
the products will make every bit as
attractive gifts as you can buy.
In case you shudder at the thought
of doing anything constructive with
your hands, take a grip on yourself
and think of that flat pocket-book.
You'll be amazed at the fun you can
have turning out simple yet attrac-
tive knick-knacks that you'll want to
keep yourself.
Feathers In The Hair
For instance, try tying twenty vel-
vet bows on. a bandeau, and you'll
see what amazing things you can do.
Get the ribbons in colors that match
your roomie's latest addition to her
formal wardrobe, and watch her face
light up when she opens the pack-
age. Or you might fasten bright-col-
ored ostrich-feather tips on a comb
for her hair. If you are willing to
take a little more time and a few
more pains, you can make a muff-
bag of wool with a gay, contrasting
velvet bow.
For those of you whose fingers itch
when they are away from knitting
needles, there are endless numbers of
giddy and practical gifts you can
dream up. You might knit a pill-box
with a backdrop and matching mit-
tens and then brighten them up with
some embroidery. Along this same
line are velvet cap and mitts embroid-
ered with yarn. If you can whip off
a sweater in nothing flat, there is
still plenty of time before Christmas
to make an evening sweater. Collars
and cuffs of contrasting beads will
dress up a long cardigan to just the
right degree.
And In The Air!
The man in your life will guard
the mammoth muffler you make him
with his life, or a pull-over with a
gabardine front will be equally appre-
ciated. If your one-and-only makes
a hobbh or business of flying, he will
make good use of the matching gloves
and helmet you knit for him. The lat-
ter will be equally welcomed, of
course, by the out-door enthusiast.
If you are one of those fortunate
people'who really wield a mean need-
le, it will take you no time at all to
make up gay cotton suits and pina-
fojes for the more youthful members
of your family. Cut appliques from
a 10-cent book in order to have gay
elephants or horses marching across
the skirts or trousers of these. Other
gifts for the younger generation are
dolls made of yarn or cloth. The lat-
ter come in forms of everything from
Melinda to Mortimer Snerd, and the
first can be modified to make clever
lapel pins.
In case you are the patient type,
we suggest you take up needlepoint
in your spare time. Chair covers and
wardrobe bench coverings make love-
ly gifts that last for many years.

Clean Up Gifts
This Christmas

By

miving Soap

If you've never considered soap se-
riously as a gift, thinking it to be
on the "inexpensive" side, take heed
to this tale of how soap makes the
ideal Christmas gift.
First of all, dispel all illusions of
inexpensiveness! Many snooty per-
fumeries put out soap which costs a
dollar a bar but is made so that the
perfume remains as long as strong
cologne., Three bars of this "gold-
plated" stuff makes the perfectgift
for the fastidious person. (And there's
a special price if you buy three at
once.)
Many cosmetic manufacturers make
up special Christmas gift sets of their
talcum, cologne and soap. One of the
cleverest of these combinations has
a bar of soap shaped like a cloud
with an angel applied to the surface.
Then, too, soaps are made in var-
ious molds such as flowers. The de-
fense move has come forth here, too,
for there is a set of a dozen bars
shaped like the eagle on the U. S.
crest. A dozen bars of these brand
new designs make an attractive and
"different" present for the lady of
the hour.
