TttP* ~i~p AN nT Chiffon Gown Spins Web Of Beauty Are Preferred In Wool Pastel Evening Coats Are Trimmed With Touches Of Fur; Some Are Designed For Double Duty even those lucky people who own fur chubbies, are a little envious of those of us who expect to open a huge,' tinsel box under the tree and find one of these stunning new formal wraps. Wool wraps preferably pastels are still predominant this season. Light blues, aquas, and pale greens make stunning coats that can be worn with almost any color formal. These wraps are usually cut princess style, and display lovely designs of beads and braid around the collar. Some are made in cape-style with gold braid in military fashion on the square cut shoulders. For An All Night Stand Nothing could be nicer to sport on New Year's even than a kelly green military cape with gold braid over a white chiffon formal. If you really want to go sophisticated you'll love a black wool beautifully cut long coat trimmed with sparkling black sequin#. Like everything else this season, formal wraps too are being trimmed' with touchies of fur. One of the spot- lights of the season is a white wool one with a beaver Peter Pan collar and three huge beaver buttons down, the center. Also very smart, but per-' haps a little out of the ordinary is the black velvet wrap with a small barrel muff to match, both of which are trimmed with ermine tails. Wrap Up In This Wraps this year are not only being designed for warmth, but also for the practical aspect. Many can be worn both for formal wear and semi- sport occasions. One of these double1 duty creations is a white teddy bear skin jacket. These are also very smart in red and dark green. Taffeta is even taking its place in this, season of glitter and glamour. A black taffeta wrap lined with a deep rose will make the people back home turn around and admire you-just home for the holiday vacation. Those of you who can't quite stretch the pocket-book to include a new wrap in your wardrobe, or have no hopes of finding one on Christmas morning need not feel badly how- ever, because last year's won't be out of place, since there has been no radi- cal change in this fashion field. Toy To Please Child For that "something different" touch for a problem child we suggest' a real wood1en cradle that's unusually decorative. It can be used for any- thing from rocking a baby doll to guarding the nursery library. I Santa Asked For Peace Present Santa dear, what I want most for Christmas isn't to be found in the stores, it doesn't came on those ver- dant evergreen trees bedecked with glittering ornaments, nor can you purchase it for any amount of money. I want Man to come to his senses, 'realize that he is a dignified human being and that civilized people do not and must not resort to bloodshed no matter what the end may be. Peace and toleration sound rather out-of-harmony with our world this year in light of events transpiring in Europe and yes, in America too. Yet, what is Christmas for but to realize the "Peace on earth, good will to- wards men"' motto and Santa, how can we have a real Christmas and one which has a meaning while our world is in the throes of a struggle which carries with it bloodshed, suf- fering, human intolerance of the worst sort, mental anguish and fears. Christmas this year will be differ- ent not only in Europe, if they have much of a holiday at all, but also right here in the U. S. Many famil- ies will have a brother, husband, sweetheart, or friend missing when th'e presents are passed around, and the turkey is sliced, for the army has had to draw on all groups so that it may be well-prepared to defend our nation; so that man will again fight man. The phrase "human dignity"' is one which has been forgotten I guess, Santa. People don't even remember that He died for that very thing- tolerance, security, understanding- these too are ideals which man has gained in the past and made them work; let them do so now.' Make man realize Santa, that we cannot gain peace through fighting, a peace that will be everlasting. Novel Trends Are Featured By Season's New Formals Ballerina Skirts, Silk Jersey With Matching Mitts, Peplums Are Styles Being Shown Now By BETTY HARVEY There are some definite, new trends in formals this season and, if New York styles progress this far west, we will all find ourselves appearing in the ultra-graceful, ballerina skirt- ed evening gown. These formals have full, full skirts which fall only to the middle of the ankle, displaying honest-to-goodness ballet shoes or a reasonable facsimile. A white lace gown, with long sleeves and a heart-shaped neck, batiste waist and ballerina skirt is an almost guaranteed sensation. Ostrich Feather Styles Ostrich feathers are coming into the limelight this year as the main theme of a 6fown. White feathers bor- dering the neck and extending over the shoulders is ultra glamorous. We saw a "honey" of a dress today and will make bets as to the rapidity with which this style trend will travel. The dress is black silk jersey top, short sleeves and heart-shaped neck, over a full white lace skirt. The "dif- ference" of the gown lies in the fact that there is a huge red poppy stitched to the waist matched by long scarlet mitts. Sequins Are Popular Two-material dresses seem to have come to stay. We find a predominance of stiff brocaded tops over net or mar- quisette skirts. And we love this style for what it does for the figures-, the wide, starched skirts seem to reduce waists to the minimum. The little woman of today has a great desire to be typed as strictly feminine. She seems, according to the styles of the moment, to have taken a shine to shine, and we find h great numler of sequins sprinkling the collection of seasonal formals. Se- quinsmight compose a whole top of a dress or may merely outline the neck and sleeves. One creation was a strictly simple white chiffon with shining sequins applied to ten inches or so of the hem. Linen Lace Is New An absolutely' brand-new theme has appeared this year in the form of black applique linen lace over blue or peach moire or satin. The lace is appliqued in a definite pattern-per- haps causing an illusion of decolite by use of the lace on a cover-up dress. Peplums are a thing of today and an effective application of this trend can be observed in the gown of light blue satin and net. The peplum of starched net. extends from the waist about eight inches and is bordered with the satin which composes the top. Everywhere we turn we see formals of white. White seems to be abso- lutely the color of the year and pastels run a very close second. For ultra- sophistication we suggest an outfit which combines the peplum and the color of the year. There there's a din- ner suit of wgite jersey which has a long long, jacket with a flaring pep- lum. Winter Winds Will Demand Warm Mittens By ALICE PRETZ Cold hands may mean warm heart, but that's no sign you should go with- out gloves all winter to prove it. Chapped hands are so, unattractive, and mittens this year are so fetching that it's silly not to take advantage of such a practical item to add to your fad collection. For instance, you might sally forth to some of the local shops and take a gander at the new touchdown mitts made of leather and laced up the back like a football. "The Monkey's Paw" Or you could try to match your new argyle sweater with a pair of mittens in the same design. "The Monkey's Paw" is also represented by knitted gloves with leather insets on the palms, and Grandma's mop mittens make a warm, shaggy little number for very cold weather. Elbow-length cable-stitched mit- tens are best when one wishes to go skiiing or tobogganing, for they pro- tect wrists and arms from snow and wind. They're easy to knit, so you might make a pair to go with ski socks and stocking cap. Capeskin Not Durable For more formal wear, the cape- skin glove has become very popular. Tt comes in all sorts of colors and can be used for even the most formal of evening gloves, though it is mostly made up into the "shortie." However, if you are looking for great durability, capeskin is not your dish. Being a synthetic leather, it is not washable, nor is it as durable as pigskin or doe- skin. It's one main advantage is that it comes in every color there is and consequently is more versatile. Holidays Bring Qift Problems To Shoppers. No sooner are blue book worries over with the coming of Christmas vacation than the worry of what to get roommate, boy friend and rela- tives for Christmas is staring you in the face. You want to give something that is different and yet something that he or she will like and you are a mental wreck' from thinking up new ideas for gifts. There are many new and novel gift suggestions this year and the way to pick the right gift is to consider the person's hobbies, crazes and whims and give something he or she would like but wouldn't buy for himself. A Perfume Necklace If your roommate or cousin dotes on perfume or jewelry, get her a per- fume neoklace, which is a chain with ten or twelve tiny colored different shaped bottles of perfume suspended in place of the usual ornaments. Be- sides serving two purposes, it is so novel that it will be the pride of her possessions. Almost every girl has a rag doll or animal collection and a gift of a woolie lamb, bear, elephant or panda will be welcomed by one and all. The animals are made in varying sizes and can be bought for almost any price you wish to pay. On A Smaller Scale If your man's hobby is horses, boats, or golf, you can't give him a new horse, sailboat or set of golf clubs, but by browsing through gift shops you can find gifts from ash trays to belts which carry out the theme of his hobby. Your grandmother or aunt will love some small china animals for her knick-knack shelf. The expres- sions on the faces of miniature skunks, horses and hippopotami are human: like and clever. After looking over, considering and debating on all the opportunities of- fered by gift shops you may still be in a quandry of indecision. If this happens, you can always give a cash- mere sweater. 1A IN THE DRAFT If you would, have him think of you more often, why not send him a silver match covering with your picture inclosed to brighten his days at camp. This unusual gadget has space for identification and a picture 11/2"x 2" as well as a match pack. Large BATH TOWELS especially for "him". LUNCHEON SETS for Mother (prints and hand-made). BABUSHKAS for Sister. GAGE LINEN SHOP 10 NIcKELs ARCADE "Always reasonably priced" Are you one of the lucky few who are contemplating a trip to the sunny South or by chance a cruise tg some nearby isle this Christmas? If not, hope you can digest a forecast for southern fashions as it will probably coincide with summer styles this year. You'll probably make a mad dash to the train in tweeds: jerkin style long jacket, matching pleated tweed skirt and winter coat flung over one arm. It'll be grand to breathe re- freshing Florida air once you hit the South, and what fun can be had with the right wardrobe! White Wool Is Tops The long torso informal dress in linen, jersey and silk can't be topped. Square necks and V necks head the list. Short sleeves, tiny waists and flared skirts are always slated for compliments. If you're looking for double duty dresses, the new white wool with gay peasant bandings can't be beat for Florida nights, and are also due for popularity for cooler Michigan eves. Prints Are still pre- ferred. Choose one in a dirndl style, tight bodice or a perennial favorite, the classic shirtwaist dress. To the beach: solid colored terry- cloth robe with big pearl buttons in imitation of campus camel hair fav- orite just seems to go with high clogs or gay colored play sandals. Jersey swim suits are gaining popularity but the lastex with hand sewn seams is still top choice. Dressmaker suits are smarter than ever this year. If you favor shorts, knee length style, jer- kin top and long sleeves complete one popular choice. Flogida is just like Michigan and a rainy day is always bound to come up. If so, don flannel slacks and hip length matching jacket, or try those denim outfits with smart cuffs and pearl button jackets. If you must go on one of those gift shopping sprees. a simple sports dress in linen or cham- bray and spectators will look neat on Lincoln Road, favorite shopping center. Now to the popular topic of for- mals. We usually hate to shop for these but what fun to- wear them. Buffant skirts, tight bodices, heart shaped necklines and tiny sleeves are still widely featured . Jersey is always a classic summer choice, and with a neat jacket it serves double purpose. If you can dig up last summer's white pique, cotton or gingham gown it will be just nifty. For Over The Formal For a wrap, if you're lucky, choose a fur jacket. If not, a three quarter white wool coat with military shoul- derline fits nicely over any formal. Fleece jackets with ribbons adding a cardigan effect serve double or triple duty, for morning, afternoon or eve- ning wear. Add finishing touches with popular designer's new style low heel- ed or wedge evening slippers. They're made in most every conceivable color and are really smooth. Here's a big feather in your cap; a four in one suggestion. It includes a silk blouse, contrasting shorts, slacks and lastly an evening skirt with cummerbund top. The blouse man- ages to fit in with all, and if you wish to save packing space and still, look chic, it's a top rate suggestion.
