THE MICHIGAN DAILY . v,. r ur Holds Spotlight In Winter Parade Of Fas ion White Wool Is' Pet Date Dress For Festivities Tunics, Peplums And Fringed Tiers Are Latest Fashion Note; Beads, Sequins Trim Frocks By DOROTHY GOLDSTEIN Christmas vacation is a college girl's best opportunity to impress the "Man-Back-Home," and it also in- eludes all the holiday dances, parties and other festivities. It's rather im- portant to look your best, therefore, and abig step is getting a date dress that will guarantee your being attired appropriately for any occasion. The fashion editors' newest pet is a white wool dress. Under a fur coat (if you are so lucky as to have one) it is the last word in elegance and good tast. One style has small brown Wooden buttons edged in gold down the front. There are tucks over the hips . and cleverly concealed slash pockets. The belt is of the same creamy white wool and has a gold buckle to set off the dress. Reversible Collars However, if you still prefer pastels or dark colors, don't worry because your favorite store still has those for you too. A youthful wool flannel is just the thing for a girl with a petite figure. One dress in this material is form fitting with'a tiny waist and full flaring skirt. The collar is reversible and gives you a much admired cas- ual look. This number may be ob- tained in blue, rose, or gold. Another form fitting dress may be had in black silk with two lines of scallops running from each shoulder to the hem. These scallops are trim- mned in old blue or old rose. The sleeves are three-quarter length and tight-fitting and the neckline is square anid also scalloped. New Coral-Red Wool For a spectacular entrance there is a coral-red wool with a basque bod, ice and full skirt. The sleeves are long and snug with fringe bordering them as well as the square neck. There are also tiers of fringe around the skirt. If, you are going to meet his mother and desire something a little more conservative there is a soft shirt-waist dress with a full dirndl skirt. The sleeves are loose and ex- tend just below the elbow. The belt is wide ane of rayon grosgrain. Make Lipstick Last j Does your lipstick -fade under the damaging influence of coke-swigging, pencil chewing, napkin wiping and other pastimes? 'Then try this, little make-up trick. Instead of .blotting your lips after applying color, apply face powder, This will form a film that will "make yopr lipstick more ,durable and will give them that desirable velvety look besides. Be Chic Ini I ttr jfWI!t Warmth And Style Are Insured /11Ehllki Is FaEshionable By Trimmed Hats, Full Originality, Cleverness Bring Gift Wrappings To Foreground Coats Distinctiveness In Fur Trim '>Sable Or Mink Dved Muskrat Goes Far For Campus Wear By Uses In Muffs And Gloves It calls for a little special twist of the wrist to keep you from being just' one of the 400 University women. This year a little fur goes far in help- ing you realize distinction. Per usual, matching fur trimmed hats occupy the spotlight with fur coats. But in case you didn't order one with your coat don't entirely abandon hope for they are abundant enough to be easily matched. Jaunty fur caps are designed this season to keep your curls under control in even the fiercest winter gales. Fur Muff Is Practical A fur muff is both practical and distinctive- even with cloth coats. Make it serve double duty by carrying it with your evening wrap. A hit this year is the tiny Persian Lamb muff matching dainty Peter Pan col- lars on dress coats or formal wraps. In speaking of formal attire, a rowI of ermine tails falling V fashion from a huge white tulle skirt and a second row edging the belt will net you com- plinents galore. Hem a white eve- ning gown with a wide band of silveK fox and drape a loose silver fox stole about your shoulders. About the neatest trick is to sew giant clover-shaped pockets of black Persian lamb on a bright red wool jacket; its chicnresults seem unbe- lievable. This winter gray Persian lamb trimmed pocketbooks strike a new note in bags. For accenting your old suede pumps try tacking a mink tail on the toe. Newest in the fur glove line are the white broadtail mousquetaire gloves; warm and definitely smart especially with a tailored suit or coat. A gray Persian lamb trim will do won- ders for tame looking gloves and is a feat yo'u can execute yourself. Fur Stoles Are In Fur stoles have staged a grand and gorgeous comeback this winter. They are being featured over tailored black wool coats made of long haired black skunk and designed to cover the shoulders and tuck through the belt. For evening wear either red or silver fox stoles make glamorous wraps. For outdoor winter sports, bunny fur parkas keep you looking feminine in this day of athletic women, Fur trimmed galoshes are concocted to match your coat be it black, brown or gray. Miniature Shoes As Gifts You can actually buy a pair of shoes for someone for Christmas- all difficulties have been discarded. Just pay the money and receive a small box with a miniature pair of shoes of some simulated leather in it. They may be turned in later for the real shoes. with gold beads. If you like peplums a gold rayon crepe with smart drop- ped shoulders should satisfy you com- pletely. Gold sequins and "turgouises" accent the sloping flare of the pert little peplum and the brief sleeves give you a chance to show off your new Christmas jewelry. Decorate With Beads For a dinner date or dancing how about a black crepe with a powder blue yoke and sleeves-which, inci- dentally, are loose and decorated with small gold and coral beads at the edges. Velveteen is always rich looking and for cold Christmas weather will be just the thing. A two-piece dress with a, plain full bodice and three-quarter length sleeves, and a full softly pleat- ed skirt will enliven your wardrobe since the blouse and skirt can also be worn with other combinations. The military influence is also much in evidence. Date dresses are now decorated with gold army and navy insignias on the sleeves. Double- breasted jackets with brass buttons over silk dresses are also much in vogue and are reminiscent of our own Navy ROTC. Are Favorites With Sheared Beaver, Chinchilla And Lynx "Christmas is here with its ice and snow, and once again the cold winds blow. The poem is poor but the idea is good if it can convince the "one in power" that daughter needs a new coat. Today it is no longer necessary to mortgage the family farm in order to purchase a precious peltry. Budget furs in the campus-irl set have come into their own. Many are such per- fect duplicates of their more extrava- gant sisters that only an expert can tell the difference.' Muskrat Heads List Heading this list is muskrat, who has powdered its nose, combed its hair and come out looking like no- thing less than mink or sable. This little animal abounds in the faraway north, where the frigid climate en- courages thick luxuriant pile. One should try to be sure, in purchasing, 3 that she is receiving the backs of the animal, the durability of which can- not be surpassed. The luxury of mink plus the sturdi- ness of muskrat equals mink-dyed muskrat. This fur will prove a double favorite for winter '41 because of the zooming popularity of brown. It may not have apedigree but it can keep company with the real article any day. Beaver Made Better Beaver has been a favorite among college women since the days of our mothers. They objected, however, to its tendency to curl and mat in the rain. A shearing process, developed in recent years, has somewhatnover- come this fault. The beaver is an ani- mal that comes from northern United States, Alaska, and Canada. Its pelt, will take a great deal of punishment. Sheared mouton has been so pro- cessed as to step in for her sister, beaver, at any time . Its wearing ability is 'excellent. It Looks Like Chinchilla Chinchilla, the pet of quedns, has been duplicated by chinchilla-dyed coney. Incidentally, coney, not rabbit is the correct name for this fur. Coney 'is a middle-English word that pre- ceded the word "rabbit" which origin- ally meant only the young of coney. Chinchilla-dyed coney is appropriate for afternoon or evening wear. Over formals it will blend with any color you have chosen for the occasion. Truthfully, however, do not depend upon it taking any rough treatment. Skunk, when blended to resemble sable, is really a very friendly crea- ture. In fat, so friendly that it will provide you with years of serviceable wear. The best quality for dyeing comes from Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas. The two white stripes are cut out of the pelts, the remaining portions of which are then bleached and dyed in sable shades. Ersatz or Lynx Have you ever dreamed of owning a genuine lynx jacket. It is that fav- orite of the pale, long-haired group, that is perfect over sport tweeds or fluffy formals. You may stop dream- ing for white fox can be dyed to per- fectly masquerade for the reality, and for half the price. Treat her gently, however. Wolf can also be made to resemble lynx. It will wear better than the fox duplicate, costs lss, but isn't quite so pretty. For Senior Women Taking into consideration that to- day's seniors will be business women tomorrow, you who fall into this group should purchase your clothes accordingly. For example, flawless black Persian lamb with its tight, iAf-black curls, its mirror sheen, will complete your college career, and be- gin your business career. It is truly an aristocrat among furs. In purchasing a masked fur be sure to find out just what it is imitating, how this imitation was accomplished, and just what was the original fur. Blending and dyeing in no way im- pair the original value of the fur, if done by a reputable firm. In this way it is possible to have the beauty and good taste of a rare fur with half the cost and half the care. So now sit down with sweetness in the pen and cleverness in the head and convince Dad that he should make your most exciting Christmas dreams come true! Deerskin Moccasins "Drafty corridors, thou shalt bother me no more!" will be your cry if you are fortunate enough to receive a pair of those luscious smtked deerskin moccasins on Christmas morn. Made by the Indiansthey-are per- feet for sneaking around the halls during quiet hours. As regards warmth, few slippers can be com- pared with them. Comfort is the key- note of the design for these moccasins fit like gloves. Incidentally, no two designs are exactly alike, so you may be unique as well as warm and comfortable. By MARILYN MAYER "..forl the gift without the giver is bare" and in this day and age of Christmas shopping by telephone, a cleverly wrapped gift boasts that its owner has really spent some time and effort to make the recipient's Christ- mas a merry one. To be sure tissue paper and tinsel may always be em- ployed as a last resort but why not have everyone raving over your pack- ages this Christmas? Toss conventional wrappings, meth- ods and colors to the winds this year and let your imagination run wild on each individual package! Raid every department store and 5 and 10 counter for clever doodads to bright- en up, your packages and even draft some that were never intended for Christmas wrappings. In Fact, Anything Goes Hunt up unusual wallpapers, old yarn, left over dress materials, and rickrack braid to make your pack ges unique. Use the rickrack as ribon and as a final stroke of genius spell out the name of the happy recipient of your gift with the braid. From the scrap bag plaid and polka dot cotton materials cut up and pasted on make gay trimmings and may even be used to make tassels for the ribbon ends. Lingerie lace with ribbon run through it over paste tis- sue paper is a possibility you've prob- ably never thought of. Left over yarns make festive ribbons and old fashioned yarn dolls tied to thV ends, give your package that extra touch. Tape It With Color In this era of Scotch tape, there's no excuse -for a gift arriving with the ribbon feebly clutching at the package for support. Colored Scotch tape is in its glory this Christmas and can readily be manipulated with miraculous results. For example, "peppermint stripe" a cylindrical- shaped package with. silver tape. Or for originality, cut the tape yourself and make your own designs. Another smooth idea is to buy in- dividual letters at the 5 and 10 and, paste them on to spell Noel or the person's name. Crown a tailored multi-looped bow tied at the small end of the package with frosty New Year's bells. Or better yet swing a red cellophane bell from a giant red satin bow. An e a Toothbrushes Used To Paint greeting Cards- A very neat and inexpensive way of producing one's own Christmas cards can be accomplished as follows. Select a design such as a bell, a piece of holly, or something equally seasonal and cut it out of cardboard. Next hunt up anpld tooth brush and a can of red or green paint. When the materials are gathered, place the design on a blank card and proceed to spatter the paint bysmeans of rubbing the tooth brush (filled with paint) over the edge of a stiff piece of cardboard. Apply the paint heavily nearer the design and faintly, as the areas not near the design are spattered. Cover only a part of the card and 'when the paint is dry, remove the de- sign and behold the bell or holly de- sign outlined by paint spatters. Did I say NEAT? Well, fun, any- way and quite effective! ethereal ten-cent store angel sur- rounded by a geld paper sunburst riding atop your gift will give it a definite holiday appearance. Speak- ing of angels, fashion a Russian style angel for your package by clipping wedges out of a lace paper doily and crown her with a metal paper halo. The Snowy Aspect Fluffy cotton snowballs stuck on ribbons or a pipe cleaner ice skater on a "Christmas tree snow" lake will make your gift distinctive. Cello- phane straws offer limitless possi- bilities. Make a Santa Clans face on one of your less weighty gifts, out of cotton and white paper with handles on top so it can be hung over a Christmas tree branch. If you are wrapping jars of jelly or jam or just jars in general~ dress them in bright cellophane hats plus a few cellophane curls and give them Christmas seal eyes, nose and mouth. A practical package may be designed by topping a box with three huge clown collars of red, white and blue cellophane supporting a cellophane wrapped cookie face with a jaunty hat perched on one side. Disguise a bottle as a lamp by giving it a bar- er pole stripe of Scotch tape and adding a dime-store lamp shade. Skip a greeting card and scrawl your wishes across the shade. Tuck a man's small gift under a mountain of pretend cotton soap suds spilling out of a similarly stripped shriving mug. Smart And Simple For a smart yet simple do why not use brown paper tied with gay red cord, the ends of which you tip with big gold Sunday school stars? If you ever get down to your last gift and have completely exhausted your supply of ideas, why not appropriate a few snippings of pine and some bulbs from the Christmas tree and tie them in with your bow? Patriotic packages promise to be popular this Christmas; try topping your pack- age with a toy boat, plane or gun appropriate to "his" branch of the service! Well, now with a lot of new ideas under your bonnet let your hair down and really come through with some packages that are packages this year!
