TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1940 THE MICHIGAN DAILY pAG1Z SEVEN--I ECTION ONE _ _. ._ -__ _--- National Defense Work Expected, To Affect University'sActivities Students ToBe Exempted From Draft Until End Of 1940-41 Term National defense work in its many aspects is bound to cause the Uni- vcrsity some trouble, although early organization is expected to obviate any serious difficulties, President Ruthven said in a press conference Saturday. Students, he pointed out, have been assured of exemption from the draft until the end of the 1940-41 school year by clauses of the con- scription act. "I do not know the provisions as to absentee registra- tion by' students, but it is certain that all those who are of 'draft age' will be required to register some- where," he added. Phone your Detroit Edison office for a Light Meter survey of your home with- Iout charge. members of the national guardaunits has not yet been determined as far as University officials know, the President said. It is expected, how- ever, that such a small number of students here are members of the national guard that no big problem will be presented. No word has been received here as to possible changes in status of C.A.A. students. Several requests for the services 4 members of the University faculty lready have been received from the rational defense council, he, contin- ond. Leaves of absence are being ,ranted the men called upon for na- ional service, and the University is aking steps to organize a "defense ;oard" of its own, he added. In order to prevent University ;Mans from being seriously disrupt- A,. President Ruthven said, it will be necessary to work out a system that will permit substitutions when in- structors are called away. During World War I, he said, government work took so many of the top-flight ;rofessors that the University found tself nearly unable to carry on vital training work.
