That's the wardrobe suitcase. It comes in every material from canvas to alligator to natural cow- hide. It's a large zipper bag that holds two to three suits, shirts and ties in one compartment; and a smaller compartment holds your shoes, shaving brush, socks. The most common one folds in the center and can be hung up for pack ing. You can cram it full without fear of wrinkling your clothes. It's big enough to last you on a two week trip to Florida this winter or a week- end trip ,to your roommate's home. The price on this most utilitarian piece of luggage runs from about $10. to $25. Small week-end bags in calfskin and pigskin are still the ideal gift. They're light, quickly packed and very good-looking. Prices have come down this year on light weight airplane luggage. And don't think you must confine this type of luggage to air travel. If you've ever hitch-hiked you'll appreciate its practicability. Experts Praise Cashmere Sweater; 'Touchstone'Booms Leather Vest Although a hand-knitted Cashmere sweater is the ideal gift for father, fiance or brother, not all women and very few poor, helpless males have time or ability to hand-knit a snappy sweater. Next best thing, according to fash- ion experts and their publications, is one of the soft Cashmere ready-made models featured at most of Ann Ar- bor's men's stores. The Cashmeres run in price from $5 to $15, depending on the weight and finish of yarn and knitting. Cashmere yarn has been called "soft as angel wings," and that de- scription fits it with a high degree of accuracy. Most of the Cashmere sweaters are fine knit, made of light but warm yarn. Second in popularity only to the Cashmere is the sweater made from Shetland wool. Shetlands are heavier and are not as soft as Cashmeres, but their prices range from $5 to $10. Natural colored sweaters and heather mixtures are currently the most popular, with camel's hair not far behind. Safest color for a gift is the natural shade-tan, almost buff, -although nearly any color will be appreciated in a Cashmere or Shet- land sweater. --{ I Just Hats Indicate Most Radical' Style Change (Continued from Page 2) a little in front of the white tie. By the way, a really fashionable note will be struck if you wear tie and vest of matching white pique. Accent On Comfort Although the business man in lean- ing more than ever to the fitted double-breasted overcoat and top- coat this winter, the collegiate accent is still on comfort, with Balmaccan well up in popularity. Heather mix- tures, some with light overchecks, are coming to the fore among patterns, although herringbones and diagonal stripes haven't been neglected by the customers. Absolutely the last word, of course, is still the Burberry tweed -still obtainable from England-in waterproof fabric of nearly any color, shade or pattern desired. Semi-Sports Model A new deal in men's suits has been made during the past year, with the semi-sports model coming to the fore in respectability and popularity. These suits-generally light tweeds or flannels-are suitable for school, country or downtown wear, and bus- inessmen are sensibly adopting them for office work. The accessories worn with these semi-sports suits must be selected cale. wear, while brushed cottons or light wools in pastel shades are ideal for a transformation to sports clothing. Ties, shoes and hats should also be varied to fit the occasion: Homburg, black calf shoes and regimental striped tie for town; snap-brim felt, smoked elk brogues and plain black knit tie for country. By TOUCHSTONE The leather vest has come to stay. There is little doubt of that, and if you doubt it, look about you. Well, look sharp, but you're bound to see one, or maybe two on that friend of yours who is always so dressed. Leather vests have everything a man can desire in looks, good taste, that nice warm feeling, the touch of soft suede or whatever it may be. Leather vests are the most important contri- bution society has made to society since the beginning of society. They are plenty nice, let me tell you. It was four years ago that I had my first taste (now don't take me literally) of leather vests. On a dark and blustery night of the year 1937. it seems so near and yet so far away, there came knocking at the door of my fraternity house, Lambda Chi Alpha, 1601 Washtenaw, a wander- ing peddler, bearing in his pack a hell of a lot of leather vests. My heart was touched, both by the sight of all that lovely leather spread out in the living room and by the strange, mag- nificent fire in the man's eyes. I mused to myself. This is a man with a mission in my life. I picked from amidst the opulent display, two vests, simple things, one of smooth yellow leather, and another of fine imitation pigskin. What did they cost me? Well, does it really matter? Price is not everything. And it was the same year that I began my own crusade to make the campus Leather vest conscious. I too had found in the leather vest the answer to all those dire problems which beset the young man at the beginning of his twenties, and in the leather vest I found peace and war incessant. And for three years I told the world at every available op- portunity the beautiful story of the leather vest. It was more than a sur- face desire, it had became my life's blood. Somehow I knew, I had a gnostic sense that the leather vest was a thing too good for this world, that it was perhaps a thing out of place in time, that the workaday world was not yet ready for the leather vest. Every once in awhile I wore one of my vests, mostly the pig- skin one because the yellow one looked like oilcloth when I got it into a strong light, and whenever it did so, I-felt the satisfaction of those monlr/ of yore in their haircloth shirts, for I knew I was right, and I gloried in the ownership of my leather vests. Last summer I gave to a very young boy of my acquaintance my yellow vest. He has been a better boy since. And to you, all of you, I say, the leather vest will make a better more rounded person of you, if you are man enough to live up to it. Sox Or Socks Retain Place In Popularity This Year's Colors Make Them Suitable Presents For Friends Or Foes Socks or sox-they still make won- derful Christmas gifts-and they're so pleasing to look at and so much fun to pick out at the store. This year socks come in three lengths, entitled peculiarly enough, long, medium and short. They come in many consistencies, from glass- smooth to fuzzy-fluffy. These we shall not discuss. But this year's colors-ah, the col- ors-they are the byootiful! Anything goes in socks, especially legs. For instance, bright red socks may be worn under conservative pin stripe trousers, if the trousers are long enough. No longer does the outwardly con- servative man need to be repressed. He can wear a pair of wonderfully bright socks, obscured by a conserva- tive suit. But, to get more serious, if you are picking out a pair of socks for a conservative dresser-use the necktie rule-for goodness sake- make them conservative! Before you buy a pair of socks for your boy friend, be sure you know his foot size. Nothing is more annoying than to have your sock so long that it doubles under your toes or one so small that your heel breaks through with a crash as you put them on. The short length socks are very desirable for those men who don't wear garters, but are not advisable in the winter when he wants protec- tion from drafts and snow drifts. But nowadays, any length sock can be purchased which has enough elastici- ty to stay up without benefit of gar- ters.
