Worn, not with a sober and con- ventional collar, but with one of any number of fur accessories, a coat of good lines and style can be inter- esting even to its wearer long after the first winter. The most popular accessory for this year is a large fur muff, worn, for the most part, over the lower half of the sleeve. Leopard Is Favorite Leopard leads the field in fur fav- orites with sheared beaver coming in second. A striking example of the use of leopard as a trimming is in an outfit-untrimmed coat, prefer- ably -in one of the new blues or browns-which boasts a large, off- the-face leopard hat and an over- sized muff to match. Fur cuffs and fur pockets make for interesting detail on an otherwise simple coat. In this case, a collar is often used to good advantage. Those tiny fur hats which had such an au- spicious start last season are still : with us. In some cases, they have grown up a bit and sprouted large, flaring brims. For most of us, how- ever, the tiny toque is more prac- tical and in better taste.. Fashion says1 that you may wear them with fur coats, fur-trimmed coats and, best of all, with untrimmed coats. Fur Is Frivolous If you are feeling particularly gid- dy, and have the wherewithall, to say nothing of the nerve, to indulge this feeling, there are all sorts of firry nonsensicals made for such as you. Try a pair of fur gloves-not those heavy ones yoti have been wear- ing for skiing and the great outdoors -but real honest-to-goodness dressy gloves designedwith the same care for detail and delicacy as your fav- orite kid mitts have. You might also try fur-trimmed shoes or a fur hand- led umbrella. And the coat to show off these new accessories-a simple, dressmaker type of reefer with the fullness in front is the jumping offplace for all sorts of variations. Keep it plain enough so that its own trimming will not vie with your accessories for notice, yet have it interesting enough so that you can wear it unadorned if you should so choose. Detail of line and fit are always important, more so than ever in an untrimmed coat. A certain amount of skirt fullness is this year, as it was last year, desir- lle; but havew itcentered inrone place., A skirt which flares in front should be fairly straight of line in back. Too much fullness tends to give a voluminous effect. Plaids Are Popular For School Wear fi> ' ~ ,: .. t: ro. Color on the tennis courts defies the usual all-white costume, for sweaters, sweatshirts, and playsuits during warm weather are all in "high style" for batting the ball around. During tournament season, softball and volleyball enthusiasts sometimes change to shorts outfits, while others remain in the usual campus skirt and blouse. Riding club-ers are usually inform- ally attired; no pink hunting coats or derby hats will be found in the beginners' ring. Modern dancers, al- though they may use ordinary sports clothes, usually prefer the standard knitted leotard and skirt. Ski suits are morally outlawed for class wear at Michigan, but on those first skiing and tobaggoning sprees, most people find those heavy leg- warmers the best bet for comfort. Not to be seen, but much to be used are the long woolen pajamas that provide extra warmth underneath snow-suit trousers. Down at the ice skating rink, such carefully planned "hot-clothes" are not needed. Although the beginners usually plan for days in advance how to keep both warm and un-bound' on the rink, they discover that after two laps, shedding extra sweaters is usually necessary. A skirt, sweater, and jacket are all the woolens needed. Indian Jewelry is In Season By RHODA LESHINE Arriving to harmonize with the season of Indian Summer is the lat- est in costume jewelry-blazing wood- en beads which are worn over sweat- ers or plain wools. Longer in length than the average necklaces, these Indian beads some- times reach the waist in single or double strands. Some are of oval shape and others resemble small chestnuts in fall colors.- They're strung together with ordinary rope or bright cord. Wooden Beads Are Smart One style especially clever is fash- ioned of a variety of beads in a mul- titude of colors. The wooden orna- ments are strung on a brilliant green piece of leather which ties in a bow at the back of the neck. Incidentally, you may take the slo- gan, "Don't take any wooden nickels," literally for the cutest bracelets are found with wooden pennies. And necklaces are made to match. You can be conservative and match them to a natural leather belt or take on a colorful mood in an array of varied, hue. Lapel Pins Add Color Splashy pins are clever to dress up your lapel on either jacket or reefer; and flag pins are nice if you're the patriotic type. Lapel ornaments are composed mostly of jewels-rhinestones being most popular. Leather and wood still are as attractive as ever, being tops for sport jackets. If you're clever you could fashion some yourself out of . what, you're not? . . . well, then, you can buy them as I do. Did want to mention as a word of caution to watch your mixing of colors. While its fun to be giddy, it's tricky to attain that unconventional air without appearing downright loud. So dip your paintbrush carefully but don't spare the color. Most fun is found in unusual color combinations . . . if they harmonize. Try some, and maybe that masterful fashion group will bear down -on you to take your snap as the coed with the' smartest outfit of the week. Dodge The Rain Drops Freshmen are always told that Ann Arbor weather is unusually damp, that it rains continually. Many students believe the statement and others laugh at it, shun wet-weather shoes, rain coats, and scarfs or hats and catch pnemonia. So, my friends, take it from" one who knows. Put away your pride and keep your health. Keep the rain out of your hair. Masquerade Rims Are New How does a masquerade ,the new love of the campus, appeal to you? That the harlequin rage has swept Michigan women into its current is quite evident. Since the harelquin compacts ap- peared last Christmas, the piquant mask with its pert tilted eyes has found its own. Even the oculists have yielded to fashion. No longer must you wear sturdy metal rims or thick unbecoming horn rims, said the decision of a few years ago. And rimless glasses were a joy to those who wore them continually. Shell rims were and still are dear to the college girl. But today the harlequin rims are the crowning triumph. These glass- es are found in fiesta colors, red, green, blue and bright yellow, as well as neutral tones. Their tilted angles give a provocative, almost oriental effect. No longer are our eyes round blank windows. With the harle- quin rims we actually find access to a soul, which we'd been really won- dering about. There is something enchanting about the little gold mask-like com- pacts that is double trouble when the glasses echo the same note. Even formals this year have the harle- quin air of masquerading. The semi- demure high necklines, exaggerated shoulders and sleeves, with the long torso and gathered skirts beneath are definitely reminiscent of the days when masked balls were the most thrilling dances of the year. Belts Take On New Fashion Importance From leather ones for daytime to beaded ones for the evening, belts are taking on new importance in fashion news. Jewel cowboy belts are as livening as are the metal studded ones that brighten many a black dress this year. Still in the western theme, one belt has a buckle that looks like a saddle, and has stirrups hanging down each side. In the evening, the bead craze is extending to belts, which are heavily laden with them. Sweet and simple is the cry. It isn't practical to be the wearer of an intricate and stylish hair style for when the carrillon strikes eight bells, your hair isn't combed, and you have an eight o'clock there is no time for fussing with your hair. The opposite sex has the right idea. They cut most of their hair off and it is almost impossible to tell if it has been combed or not. But that is going just a bit too native for the average college women. A simple-to- care-for hair-do will solve the prob- lem very well. Freshmen and Upperelassmen! Join our Hosiery club.
