The first one of these designers' brain children takes the form of tri- tone, the name of which implies the use of three colors and they do not necessarily have to blend perfectly. A color combination of beige, porce- lain and soldier blue frequently greet the eve as one passes a dress shoppe. The skirt bearing a front gathered fullness and slash pockets carrying on the dirndle craze of the past sum- mer go to make up the latest vari- ation of tri-tone frocks. Frost Crepe Is New Something brand new in materials; comes in a gulf blue frost crepe; it looks just like it sounds - cool, soft, moderately shiny. Frost crepe Men's Fashions Once Featured Wigs, Ruffles Rv P.ETT AL.T.FX By GRACE MILLER Women may be more style-con- scious than men today, or perhaps they merely have a broader field of fashion in which to exercise their ingenuity; but it wasn't always so, if the films which the Art Cinema is now showing have any truth in them. In the Douglas Fairbanks film, "The Man in the Iron Mask," the costumes were elaborate and eyecatching. Wo- men's formal dress today shows many of the features of the long-skirted, bouffant gowns that were used cen- turies ago in the days of the gayest French kings. Men Wear Satin Outfits But the men should blush to see the lengths to which they used to go to make themselves pretty. At least from thetviewpoint of the drab male of today. Silks, satins and laces, ruffles and pretty calves played a large part in the thoughts of the courtiers; perhaps about the same role that sports coats and ties occupy in the mind of the college man of today. And high heeled slippers! The king wore dainty little buckled numbers, into which he thrust legs clad in silk stockings above the knee,' dec- orated with ornate clocks. Short sat- in pants that ended above the knee were decked out in ruffles.. Wigs Were Masculine Pride To say nothing of the coiffeurs. Beautiful wigs were a great source of pride. The one hope we hold out for the men is that even then under the wigs their hair was pompadoured and held close to the head. is especially impressive when cut along long torso lines and stitched in accordance with tucked bodice rules. Jerkin ensembles are siill up there in the first line of approval, mak- ing progress rather than losing it. A powder blue jersey sport with a maroon corduroy has just the colleg- iate touch added by the presence of a matching skull cap. A red crepe all occasion basic dress topped with a slip-over, nail studded jerkin ac- curately represents a fad which though it follows the mode of any fad is rapidly exceeding its bound- aries. We find nail heads adorning the most sophisticated black dress as well as the opposite extreme, belts of tailored dresses. Speaking of belts, now is a good time to mention that large belts definitely have it. They are most effective on a plain dress with tailored lines, but are also the thing for the previously mentioned tri- tones. Traditional Styles Approved Yes, fall styles of 1940 in date dres- ses seem to be quite content to step along lines that have already passed the careful scrutiny of coeds. Just to prove it, here are some things that are considered by stylists, store own- ers, and college girls alike, to be just perfectly correct for that date to the Union or to the League. First of all, metallic thread through ribbed tissue crepe makes up a stunning pinafore. Slim silhouette crepe with pedal fitted bodice all combined into side drape lines continues to cater to those enthusiastic over the new side drape styles. Wool frocks, tailored, sport, cas- ual, and dressy are still holding onI to their all-important section of anyI girl's wardrobe. These delightfully soft and reversed wools come in all powder and pastel tones and in lusc- ious "bon-bon" colors. Leathered wov- en sport belts set off the plain wools just as three-quarter length sleeves set off the dressier ones. And that's another thing that simply will not and can not be driven out of our fashion centers -- bracelet length sleeves. They are in now and have been in for quite some time. Cur- iosity conquers and we wonder how long they will stay in the limelight. Hollywood Invades Mid-West Hollywood invades the Mid-West sprinkling its glamour over our dres- ses. Gold leather, gold and silver embroidery, immense glass buttons bedeck the average black dress and oddly enough are also found on the plain dresses. And last of all, fur is waging a bitter battle to maintain the unani- mous favor that it has enjoyed for quite some time. It seems that styles now controlling the window displays, magazine covers and advertisements are apt to be extremely lasting and perhaps will endure all competetive I - the length and the dattering lines it gives when worn over a full, ac- cordion pleated skirt. Combine it for evening with an aqua moire basque blouse gold buttoned, or a puck- ered silk jersey, or a tailored satin Joan Kenley. No coed should be a wallflow- er at the flood of new formals if she's been to the Kessel shop for her gown. One unusually be- guiling model is of champagne net, the bodice brocaded in gold and silver threads.
