APR30, 4;1941 N Sailors Are High And Dry Inland With Stars, Braid And Middies By BARBARA DE F1UES If you want to be aquatic, patri- otic, exotic, and comfortable all at the same time, keep an eye on the sailor trend-it's going to storm many a wardrobe this summer. Casual date dresses with striped skirts, typical square sailor collars and sharp star buttons are presented in 'the nation's colors of red, white and blue. Other dresses are adorned with long, full, middie ties of navy, often splashed with stars and stripes. Class room dresses of pale blue with several white stripes on the bands of the full, 4ong sleeves, and a red middie tie setting off the huge sailor collar are being seen on cam- pus everywhere. Loose sport shirts of white cotton, with dark stripes on the short sleeves and collar are being worn with every- thing from tailored skirts to comfort- able shorts and slacks. Sailors Go Sophisticated Even the most sophisticated for- mals are displaying the popular sailor type. A simple white dress, cut lcw in the front with the collar sweep- ing broadly over the shoulder into a sailor square lookA becoming with or without a navy jacket. Jackets worn with this type of formal usually have stripes on the sleeves which match the stripes bordering the collar. Sailor slack suits are the height of this trend's perfection.: Very pert are those young ladies who adorn the beaches in white rayon fabric woven outfits of trousers and loose coats with a navymiddiesprinkled with white polka dots. Or if you want to look trim and business like, climb into an admiral slack suit which for all the world looks identical to an admiral's out- fit. These come in navy blue with white buttons and two white stripes around the cuff of the fitted coat's sleeves. A soft, white scarf to hug the throat completes the costume. If you're planning a bit of strenu- ous work like sailing a boat this sum- mer, authorities recommend a one- piece fatigue suit cut along the lines of a deckswabber's garb. Or on the port side, a two-piece tailored suit. Both styles have impressive white naval insignias on the pockets and are made out of nautical sea-blue sanforized chambray. Sailors Beware!! Now for the swimming angle of this summer's wardrobe. Sailor be- ware of the latest mode of swimming suits. It's knitted 'with mercerized cotton for strength and rayqn for beauty, with a genuine middle collar squared with braid and stars. Hats, too, spell class. Not for many years has there been such a diversi- fied array. Styles range from severe shirt-waists to flippant dirndls-; from soft pastels to huge flowered prints. The shirtwaist, always a favorite, has little to differentiate it from that of past years, except perhaps for the longer waists in some of the better dresses. Atlhough the bodices in dresses of this type are all tailored along similar lines, there is a great deal of variety in the other features. Models Show Variety Some models button all the way down the front, others have pleats, ranging from one large pleat in the middle to many tiny accordian ones. Colors range from pastels to bright prints, delicate candy stripes to loud horizontal stripes of red, white and blue. The dirndl is another very popular Style. Some of these remain similar to the European peasant dress from whence they originated, with their low square necks, their very full skirts, their heavy linen fabric. Other dress- es of this style are better adapted to American girls at play, with their lightermaterials, such as silk, silk jersey, broadcloth and gingham. South Sea Lends Prints Prints, showing a south sea island influence, made up of huge colorful flowers on either black or white back- grounds, are being used in many ofI the dirndls, als are also prints with South American, Mexican, and Amer-1 ican Indian patterns. Many dirndl skirts are being sold separately to be worn with any type of blouse. There are many of this summer's dresses that are neither strictly dirndl nor strictly shirtwaist, but combine features from both these types. All types of neckline are being worn, from low "v's" to high, rounded collars. The military and nautical influence, of course, is very prominent, being shown in huge sailor collars, star but- tons, patriotic insignia onsleeves and pockets, gold braid, and imitation service stripes. 101 a pOten al wearer~sInVesLgI9UnI. hats Made Of Rubber The latest innovation is the hat made of rubber plastic to match your Cinderella shoes. The crowns of these can be lined inside with differ- ent bits of material to match the out- fit you are wearing, and in this way one hat can do double or triple duty. Probably the most interesting de- partment in summer is the beach wear, where are to be found beach hats in gay tropical prints. Many of these have a rim of thin wire inserted at the outer edge of the brim to keep the hat from flopping in the breeze. Every woman has yearned to wear a picture hat. Perhaps this is your summer for one, and what a lucky Crowning Gory ... Here To Stay! lady you are! Rough straws in lus- cious pastels, smooth straws, and starched linens with floppy brims entice the spectator's eye. ' Navy Lends Ideas The navy comes in for its share df honor this summer, too. White straw or linen sailors wilf be just the thing to wear with your linen suit. And oh, we mustn't forget the na- tural straw bonnets which rivalsthe perennially popular cocanut straws this summer. These bonnets have a heart-shaped brim and colorful) streamers that tie coquettishly under one's chin. Here's a tip to those of you who want to look chic-plus on summer afternoons or informal evenings. Combine a white and black print dress with a huge horse-hair hat. We assure you the total effect will be quite breath-taking. Try Alligator, Snake Alligator and snakeskin are the cry for bags and shoes these days. These leathers come in smart tones of brown for alligator, and gray for snakeskin. You can tell a real snakeskin by the way the little scales half peel off. They are nevertheless, tough as the snake himself, and wear as long. Matching leather shoes and bags are the perfect complement to a tailored summer suit, 'leancut and cool for smart- ness. Summer Coats Are Wasab Wrap Around Jersey is Gathered into Soft Pleats Fashion experts remembering cool summer evenings, have provided the college girl with a variety of coats to wear over linens, cottons and sharkskins. One model is of a light rayon fab- ric, and the manufacturers claim it to be washable and wrinkle-resis- tant. The shoulders of this coat are sloped and the sleeves are full. It comes in belted or fitted styles. A new idea in coats which prom- ises to be popular is a wrap-around in cashmere jersey, lined with rayon crepe. The back is gathered in soft pleats and there is a broad belt of the same jersey. For informal evenings a new three- quarter length loafer of unlined wool flannel is just the thing. It has- a boxy drape with military shoulders and sleeves. The pockets are placed very low, and are square and roomy. TIf you prefer a full length box -oat, you may have one in soft wool. It has slash pockets and full sleeves and comes in white, pastel colors, red and lilac. Size And Good Looks Are Important Things In Choosing Compact One new compact offers all the features that are so important in a compact worth carrying-size, handy shape, good looks and compactness. Slim and flat and round it is, with a fluted gold cover, which looks likE the spokes of a wheel radiating out from the center, worked in yellow and red gold. What is more, the mirror i, man-sized, so that the user can ac- tually see herself in it. /7- Military Colors And Emblems Are Prominhent American fashions following the trend of the times have definitely turned to the military this spring. De- fense conscious designers have fea- tured brass buttons and emblems on Spracticallyeverything. Also patriotic l colors, red, white and blue, are among the favorites this season, especially navy blue. With summer coming on, every- thing from formals to bathing suits will be military. Even the white terry cloth beach robe popular for so many seasons has added a sailor collar. White middy blouses with collars trimmed in red or navy braid will still be worn. Sailor dresses for sport and town, navy blue jackets resembling very much those worn by real officers, evening wraps which are truly nauti- cal, and hats adorned with gold em- blems will all be shown. Play clothes and beach outfits will make good use of red, white and blue to make this a very patriotic summer. Dresses Are Caught By Hand-Clasp Belts A waist encircled by two bands- that's the feeling you'll have after donning one of the new hand-clasp belts in two-toned leather. Made to complement simple sum- mer cottons or silks, the belts clasp unnoticed at the side, while the front and back ornament is a pair of palms in the familiar hand-shake. A smart arrangement is an ensemble of belt and gloves to be worn with an espec- t ially unornamented outfit. In red and black, green and black, sm or pastels and white, the belt draws - attention to a tiny waist, adds zest to the summer wardrobe. 40 by a band that ends in pique pleat- ing. It may sound silly but it's really smooth-these little middie collars on zipped square envelope purses of faded-blue denim. Yes, and there are even cool-ee beach shoes with the same middie collars to match these unique purses. Use Navy Emblem Accurate copies or the Navy em- blem are now being used to brighten up plain black suede pumps. Middie collars boasting small stars and an- chors trimmed with the stars and stripes are being adapted to both the low heeled sport shoe and the medi- um or high heeled dress shoe. Last but not least, sleeping pajamas have even gone nautical. These are made of white cotton broadcloth with a royal blue emblem and blue piping on the sleeves and sailor collar.'
