Baseball Team
Leaves Today

Stoddard To Hurl Opener
At Maryland Tomorrow;
Fisher Discloses Lineup
A 16-man Wolverine baseball squad
will leave by car at 7:30 a.m. today
for College Park, Maryland, where
Michigan opens its 1941 season to-
morrow against the University of
Maryland Terrapins. The game is
scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Also traveling with the four-car
caravan, besides Coach Ray Fisher,
are Charley Knapp, manager, Don
Wirtchafter, Daily Sports Editor,
and Mr. Lloyd Allen, Wolverine fan
who volunteered to drive one of the
cars. The squad plans to pull into
College Park early this evening.
After, meeting the strong Maryland
club Michigan will go to Lexington,
Virginia, where they face Washington
and Lee Saturday. Monday they step
into a schedule that calls for six
games in as many days. The team
meets North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Monday; VMI at Lexington Tuesday;
Navy at Annapolis Wednesday;
Georgetown at Washington Thurs-
day; Richmond at Richmond, Va.,
Friday and Virginia at Charlottesville
Saturday. The squad will return to
Ann Arbor late Sunday,' April 20.
Fisher put his players through a
long batting drill yesterday afternoon
in their last pre-seasoh workout. All
of the six pitchers on the squad
worked during the practice session,
and Fisher announced that Mickey
Stoddard, veteran right-hander,
would start against Maryland, with
either Mase Gould or Neil Muir,
southpaws, in reserve. Sophomore
Cliff Wise will probably be the start-
ing hurler in Saturday's contest with
Washington and Lee.
The batting order for the opener
will have Davie Nelson, centerfielder,
leading off, followed by Don Hol-
man; Mike Sofiak, shortstop; Captain
Bill Steppon, second base, in the
clean-up slot; sophomore Dick Wake-
field in right; George Ruehle on first;
Bud Chamberlain, third; George
Harmns, catcher; and Stoddard.

Tobin, Hammett, Porter Lead
Tennis Squad On Southern Trip
By ART HILL
Ask Varsity tennis coach Leroy
Weir how his team is shaping up for
the coming campaign and you won't
get a very enthusiastic answer.
"They'll be a little better than last
year," represents the height of the
young net mentor's enthusiasm.r
But there's a twinkle in his eye
when he says it that leads the queg-"

hopes for his boys. And why not?E

By BUD HENDEL {
In a game marked by fast stepping
backfield men, a powerful Red team
came from behind yesterday to over-
whelm a weakening Blue squad, 26-13.1
It was the last spring practice session1
before school is resumed on April.21.I
Coach Fritz Crisler placed all vet-
erans on the Blue team and all fresh-
men with the exception of quarter-
back George Ceithaml, on the Red
aggregation; but before the tilt was
finished many of the Bluemen were
shifted to the Reds.
Norm Call, hard running junior
halfback who played for both teams,
ran off with the scoring honors for
the day as he crossed the goal line
for two touchdowns and passed to Ot-
to Chady, Blue right end, for anoth-
er. But it was yearling John Allerdice
who set the Red outfit on the victory
road with his accurate passes.
Blues Score First
The Blues struck first. After re-
covering a Red fumble, they resorted
to the airlanes as Call flipped one to
Chady who covered the remaining
twelve yards to paydirt. Melzow
missed the conversion.
And it wasn't long after that when
the Blue team scored its second and
last tally. Guard John Laine broke
through to block Allerdice's quick
kick on the Red 10 yard marker, and
tackle Flop Flora fell on the ball as
it bounced over the goal line. This
time Melzow made the extra pointr
good.
After the next kickoff Allerdice
turned on the aerial fireworks. He
passed twice to end Walt Friehofer
and once to Ceithaml to advance the
ball to the Blue twelve. Then he hit
George again to account for the
first in a long parade of Red touch-

downs. His extra point attempt was
wide.
The next time the Reds gained
possession of the ball the Allerdice-
to-Friehofer combination, mixed in
with short passes to Ceithanil and
plunges by Don Boor, carried the pig-
skin to the Blue ten where the Blue-
shirts held. But the Redmen bounced
right back. Boor's smashes and a pass
to Petoskey advanced the ball to the
two, from where Allerdice scored.
Grissen converted.
Call Tallies Twice -
Call took Allerdice's piace in the
Red backfield, and after Pregulman
intercepted Morrison's pass, Norm
skirted right end for the third Red
touchdown. Once again Grissen's cdn-
version split the uprights. Then on
the last play of the game, Call broke
off tackle and raced sixty yards
for the Reds' final tally.
The contest was featured by Call's
flashy running, Allerdice's passes,
Boor's line bucks, Friehofer's sterling
end play, and Lame's fine guard
performance.
