Relays records were broken in the college sprint medley relay, the college distance medley relay and the' mile relay. Michigan's time of 3:19.5 in the mile relay clipped .9 second off the old mark of .l :20.A, also held by the Wolverines. In a thrilling finish on the last leg of the University two-mile relay, Warren Breidenbach, Michigan's great runner, made a great effort to catch Campbell Kane, Indiana's star. Prew, Clark and Bob Gardner, Wayne's smooth diver, accounted for all the Tartar first piaces. Mann's mermen handled the rest in fine shape with a first and third in the 220, 150 yard backstroke and 200 yard breaststroke, and Jack Wolin's second in the dive. As in the last meet of these two schools, the score was tied from the diving event on. The Tartars pulled out a momentary lead in the century when Guy Lumsden copped a third behind Prew and Sharemet. The backstroke, with Dick Reidl pulling a cat out of the bag in the last 10 yards, put the Maize and Blue in the lead again. Ted Horlenko's third place gave the Wolverines an edge. This added strength in the back and breaststroke spelled the differ- ence between a Wayne and a Wolver- ine victory. The overflow crowd went slap-happy as the Tartars stayed within scoring distance of the Mich- igan natators-but all-around bal- ance soon dispelled their hopes for an upset. Five pool records were swept off the books-the Wolverines taking three and the Detroit lads two. Prew was credited with both Wayne's share with a :23.5 performance in the 50 and a 52.2 time in the 100 yard sprint. Michigan's winning 400 yard relay team, Jim Skinner, and Jack Fat- ten's 2:13.6 in the 220-yard distance race accounted for Michigan's part of the record-breaking party. Bruce Allen helped Skinner in the breaststroke, finishing third behind Wayne's Monk Taylor as Skinner sped to a 2:24.8 poolrecord. Allen also handled the breaststroke leg in the medley relay team of Capt. Bill Beebe and Claire Morse. Owen came up with the outstand- ing play of the game when he skated in on Hank Loud, Michigan goalie, and feinted him completely out of position, then punched the puck around him. Priestley's first goal came in on a long shot on which Loud was completely screened. The little Michigan net-minder didn't see the puck until after it had hit the cords. This goal and Owen's first tally both came while the Wolverines were playing short handed. Bob Collins got one of the fatal penalties for checking Owen in the neutral zone and Johnny Gillis, Wolverine de- fenseman, received the other for trip- ping. Owen was knocked out when Collins hit him but was revived and stayed in the game. Johnny Gillis racked up the only Michigan score when he skated past the Illinois defenseto take a pass from Paul Goldsmith and fire it in- to the webbing. The tally came in the second period after Illinois had scored twice. For two periods, the Michigan club played the best hockey it has turned in this year. The Wolverines broke through the defense repeatedly butj two of their shots hit the goal posts and Jack Gillan, the Illinois goalie, came up with several great saves to keep them from scoring more than once. The Illinois team was at full strength tonight, their two star de- fensemen being back in thetgame. Amo Bessone, who missed Thursday's contest, won by Illinois by a 4-2 score, because of illness in his family, flew back from his home in Massachusetts in time for the contest. Tall Paul 'Goldsmith, Michigan's junior center, and goalie Hank Loud did outstanding work for the Wol- verines.
