THE MICHIGAN DAILY Punter Needed As State Preps For Wayne Tilt Stiff Scrimmages On Tap To Find A New Kicker; Injury Benches Kinek EAST LANSING, Sept. 18.-(P)- Michigan State College's football Spartans resumed a three-a-day practice schedule today, with the re- turn of seasonable weather, and Coach Charley Bachman renewed the hunt for a punter. Scrimmages, scheduled for later in the week, will determine who will take over the kicking department, All- American halfback Johnny Pingell's old assignment. Jerry Drake remains thestand- out candidate for the punting bur- den. Eddie Pearce, Wyman Davis, Duane Crosthwaite, Stan McRae and others also have been receiving at- tention. Veterans of last year's squad will make their bids this week for places of the starting lineup against Wayne University Sept. 30. Sophomore com- petition for many of the berths is keen, with one of the sturdiest crowds of second-year men in years out for the Varsity team.- Pre-season drills languished dur- ing unseasonably warm weather last Week. Bachman resorted to night practice sessions in an effort to round his team out on schedule. The injury jinx caught up with Bachman's charges in today's scrim- maging, the stiffest of the season. The casualty was Mike Kinek, senior end noted for his blocking ability. Train- ers said the extent of Kinek's injury, which affected a knee, was not known but predicted he would be out of the game several weeks. Past or Clis He'll Win T itle BRIGHTON, Sept. 18.-(P)-Forty miles out of Detroit, in a lively lake- bound setting, Bob Pastor is putting1 the finishing touches to the biggest gamble since they put dots on little ivory cubes and called them dice. For two years he has been gamb- ling for his return match with Joe Louis, which comes off Wednesday night in Detroit's Briggs Stadium with the heavyweight championship of the world at stake. For two years he has loudly proclaimed that in his first "bicycle battle" against the Brown Bomber, the 10-round de- cision against him wasn't any one- sided verdict. He has had 25 fights since that time, each one a gamble,.for in each case he tangled with a good, tough opponent right in that opponent's home town. He dropped only one verdict, a close one to Gus Doraizio in Philadelphia. And now, Bob has come down to the last week, still tossing the dice. He hasn't boxed a lick since last Thursday, an .almost unheard of thing in a heavyweight's preparation. He weighed about 187 at that time and decided to gamble the possible loss of his sharpness against main- taining that weight. He is confident the risk paid dividends. He has been in training eight long weeks, here and at Saratoga Springs, N.Y.,,and he boxed 150 rounds with sparring partners. "The work was worth it, though," Elmer Gedeon Plays Outfield For Senator Former Wolverine Stars In Field, Is. Fanned At The Plate A diving catch which drew super- latives from the attendant sports writers marked the debut of Michi- gan's six-letter man Elmer Gedeon into major. league baseball. Gedeon made his initial appear- ance in the seventh inning in right field for the Washington Senators yesterday in their game with the De- troit Tigers. The Wolverine three-sport man got his big chance when Gehringer hit a line drive which was marked for: ex- tra bases. Elmer, a two-time Big Ten outdoor hurdle-champ, sprinted to- ward the foul line, and throwing him- self at, the ball, speared it and slid five feet across the grass on his shoul- ders to make the catch. Three called strikes marred the ex- Wolverine star's only time at bat. Gedeon won two letters in track, baseball and football. He signed with the Senators this spring after grad- uating from Michigan. The Wash- ington club failed to file his contract with the league officials before the June deadline, and the Wolverine star was declared a free agent by Judge Landis. He again signed with the Wash- ington club and was sent to Orlando in the Florida league where he bat- [ted close to .300 clip, which earned him his recall to the majors. Cards Split With Giants ST.
