A.f BUDDY ROGERS Handsome Buddy Rogers Turns From Mule Tender To Maestro By ESTHER OSSER' It's a long step from tending mules to becoming the number one flutter- beat of the nation and the leader of a swing band, but Buddy Rogers, handsome and still as magnetic as when he captured the feminine heart of the nation in "Wings," has man- aged to make the transfer success- fully. Currently appearing at the Mich- igan Theatre in Ann Arbor, the pop- ular maestro recalls when passage for a trip to Europe meant playing nurse- maid to a pack of mules all the .way across the Atlantic--a let-dbwn, any way you look at it, for the most prom- ising young journalist at the Univer- sity of Kansas. Rogers started his musical career at the University of Kansas where he organized a five-piece band which played for the local fraternity and sorority parties. Reports of his ex- traordinary appeal soon reached the Hollywood talent scouts, for within a short time after his graduation, Jesse Lasky had signed him to a movie contract. Married for three years now, Rog- ers talks continually about his wife; Lindquist, Miss Ethel McCormick, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Oakes, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Pardon, Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Waltz, Mr and Mrs. H.A.K. Whitney, Mrs. Beatrice L. Giard, Mrs. Virginia M. Harriman and Mrs. K. Herdman. Concluding the list are Mrs. Wool- sey'Hunt, Mrs. Alfred O. Lee, Mrs. Laura D. Niles, Mrs. Dane W. Popple- ton, Mrs. Martha L. Ray, Mrs. Phillip McH. Wygant, Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Harwood, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Brown; Mr. Melton E. Cornelius, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hardy, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Kramer, Mr. F. A. LaBelle and Miss V. E. LaBelle, Mr. and Mrs. George Ruehle; Mrs. G. F. Sibley, Mrs. Geraldine Tobey and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wirtchafter. Mary Pickford, who only recently re- turned to New York after helping Eleanor Roosevelt in the campaign against infantile paralysis. Rogers recalls that the script-writers of "Wings" first introduced him to Miss Pickford, and shortly after they were cast together in "My Best Girl."
