Sa ^AZ SNE.14, IO$ THE MIClIGAN FAILY Varsity Swimmers Overpower Ohio State, a _ _ . Gus Sharemet And Welsh Tie Big Ten Marks; 2nd Meet Off (Continued from Page 1) Wolverine cause, too, by taking first places in both the 220 and the 440- yard free style events. His 2:13.6 tied the Conference 440 record set by Tom Haynie last year. IHe had Johnny Patton, Ohio's sen- sational sophomore, to contend with today, and Patton was good, but not godd enough. In the 220, the Buck- eye lad held onto Welsh's tail for the first 100 yards, but then Jim started to move. He kept opening the gap, drawing farther ahead over every lap until he crossed the line fotr yards ahead of Patton with the vereotile Stanhope a surprise third over Tommy Williams, Michigan sophomore. The quarter mile was the same story, only this time Woodling fin- ished third ahead of Dobson Burton, Main's sophomore battleship. In the sprints the Wolverines ruled supreme. Charley Barker, the nation- al collegiate champ, easily snatched the 50 while Bill Holmes after a slow start just failed to nip Don Rein- ecker, the Ohio sophomore, for second place. The century was all Gus Sharemet. The big Detroiter swam as he pleased and still turned in a record-tying 52.6 time. The Wolverines again just missed a second here, too, as Ed Hut- chens' fast finish fell inches short. Then came Beebe and his thrilling backstroke victory. The Michigan junior shared the lead throughout the first 100 yards with Dick Rledl, Mann's sophomore, and Stanhope. In the last lap, Riedl faded, but Beebe and 'Stanhope came churning toward the finish line neck and neck. Ten yards from home the Wolverine ace stuck his head out in front and kept it there for the victory. The diving turned out as expected. Al Patnik and Earl Clark, the fanous Ohio duo, finished far ahead of Jack Wolin and Capt. Hal Benham. Wolir won third place from his team mate by less than a point. The breast stroke race found Hig. gins at his best, but Johnny Share- met didn't give up without a whale of a fight. Higgins took a three, foot lead on the first lap and swans stroke for stroke With the Michigar sophomore for the rest of the way for a 2:26.3 time. Final Relay Easy Victory The final sprint relay put the fin- ishing touches on today's meet. The Wolverine quartet, Barker, John Gil- lis, Williams and Gus Sharemet, had no trouble with Mike Peppe's best. The first three Michigan mermen built up enough of a lead for Gus to swim the last lap with his head out of water, watching the crowds go by. Before the meet, Peppe announced that the second tentative Ohio-Mich- igan meet, scheduled for the Ann Arbor pool would have to be can- celled. "My card is filled up," the Buckeye coach said, "and there's nothing I can do about it now." Coach Mann was angered by the Buckeye move, since the meet was to have been the most attractive on the Michigan home schedule. "We've been meeting in a home and home series for several years and there's no reason for a change now," he com- mented.
