tet Comes From Behind To Defeat x*) Natators Leave For Dual Meet With Buckeyes Six Sophomores Included On Varsity Expected To PlayLeading Role A three car caravan carrying Mich- igan's Big Ten and National Collegi- ate swimming champs rolls out today toward Columbus town where the Wolverines open their 194 season to- morrow in a dual meet against Mike Peppe's Buckey# forces. Coach Matt Mann is taking 14 of his dynamited natators on the trip to settle once and for all the ques- tion raised by the two 42-42 dead- locks that the two squads fought to last year. Included on the traveling team is Capt. Hal Benham and Jack Wolin, who will take care of the Michigan diving duties, free. ,tylers Charley Barker, Gus Sharemet, Tommy Wil- liams, JohnGillis, Jim Welsh, Dobson Burton, Bill Holmes and Ed Hutchens, breast strokers Johnny Haigh and John Sharemet and back strokers Bill Beebe and Dick Riedl. Only Three Missing There are only three names miss- ing from the roster that battled to ties in the two Ohio meets last year, Tom Haynie, the former captain and free style ace, Wat Tomski, the- sprinter, and diver Adolph Fersten- feld, but their places are capably filled by the star-studded sophomore crew that Matt Mann has gathered together this year. Six of the 14 Michigan mermen will be swimming their first race un- der the Wolverine banner tomorrow, but they're as tried and tested a first year bunch as Matt ever had. For it was these same sophomores who stole the show last November in the natators' debut at the annual Swim Gala. In that exhibition, Gus Sharemet swam the 50-yard free style in 23 seconds flat and returned later to turn in a 52.4 century. Broth- er John churned the 150-yard breast stroke in 1:45.6. 'Twas A Great Day Husky Gillis covered the free style century in 54.8. Burton, Matt's pocket battleship, swam the 200- yard distance in 2:05.4 and Riedl went 100 yards on his back in :62.2. All in all, that November day proved a great one for the newcomers, and they've come a long way since then. And you can expect big things from Tommy Williams, too. He's another sophomore who was injured just before the Gala and was unable to take part, but he can take care of either the breast stroke or free style duties for Matt and do so in an expert manner. Mike Peppe will have his hand full tomorrow when Matt sets his powerful champions into the Colum- bus pool, and you can be sure that the Wolverine sophomores will play a leading roll in the Michigan-Ohic.
