The ther- mometer read nine degrees above zero at the beginning of the contest and had dropped to six below at the end. All freshmen interested in ing out for the yearling ti squad report to Coach C. R. Sta houseat Ferry Field any aftern this week. Experience is notr essary. C. C. Stacklous+ A clear-cut snappy voice and a sharp clap of hands was heard at the far corner of, the practice field last week and a casual glance in that direction was immediately trans- formed into an intent stare at what was transpiring. The voice and hand clap, it soon became apparent, be- longed to a determined young man upon whose shoulders rests the re- sponsibility of keeping Michigan's football machine at a fighting pitch, from the first right down to the final tussle of the season-Capt. Archie. Kodros of Alton, Ill. The scorching sun was pouring forth 95 degrees of intense heat for the third day in a row, but it had failed to reckon with the indomin.at- able spirit of the Wolverine leader. The first squad was running through a long signal drill and, it was Kodros, whose voice you'll hear plenty at the Stadium during-. the next two months, who was literally carrying the team ahead. He was always at his pivot position a junp ahead of the rest of the boys, and his rigging "Let's go, gang!" was proving a real tonic to his teammates. Earns Regular Berth Kodros has come into his own the hard way at Michigan, for the barrel- chested, bouldershouldered senior was a guard in his freshman days and when moved over to center the next year, he found the team's cap-' tain doing very nicely there. But he was determined to get a starting assignment and by some dogged, play, featured by expert passing and vici- ous tackling, he soon took over the pivot position and has been a 60- minute man ever since. In the spring .of 1938, Kodros be- came the first letterman to win the Chicago Alumni Trophy for excel- lence of play, spirit and sportsman- ship during spring practice. Great Line-Backer Archie is no 10-second man, but he's a keen diagnostician of plays and has developed the uncanny knack of always being on the right spot on defense. That's why Coach Crisler terms him one of the best line-backers he has ever seen. Off the field, this 5 foot 8 inch, 190- pound rock of granite is one of the most likeable chaps you can ever hope to find. His favorite pastime is movie-going and he averages eight trips within~ the space of a month. He isn't at all particular as to the type of picture, as long as he is en- tertained. The experts have not overlooked Kodros when listing their choices of All-American timber for 1939. There are few pivotmen in the country who can excel him in any phase of the game. But the Wolverines' leader is not so much concerned with national ranking as he is with the welfare of his team. His prime aim is to help Michigan cop the Big Ten crown which was so narrowly missed in 1938. 1 Ai .. ; WMETLAND PILLS , Gym Supplies SEASONED SPORTSMEN always view with pride the little knots (technically known as pills) that continued wear develops on the surface of Shet- land homespuns.
